  1. Datsun and the L series engine won many many races. With a racing pedigree like datusn has, I wouldnt be ashmed of the badge. I dont know why Datsun has such a bad rep though, really it was only the 120Y and some of the older datsuns which were none too inspiring. All the L series powered cars though were great, especially in SSS form.
  2. Hey Gav, care to elaborate on the certain years being better setups ?? Ray
  3. Just curious Justin, How come you are doing all this to an L26 ? After all the time you will spend rebuilding and the amount of money spent (bearings, rings, gaskets, welsh plugs etc etc)...why not do it all to an L28 ?
  4. Wel, as properly as my budget allows I guess. I guess properly really means haivng the whole thing blueprinted. As I said in my above post, my new block seems much better so all should be well. EDIT: Forgive me, I've been out in the sun all day and didnt read your post properly. The bores are getting the ridge removed and honed tomorrow
  5. Oh by all means if it has a ridge get a ridge remover and get rid of the thing. That is what I will be doing tomorrow. Im not so worried that it has a ridge, but what it indicates (worn block, possibly generaly worn engine). Realistically though, the blocks are getting on almost 30 years old in some cases, if you are within the specs of the haynes manual without a re-bore, than your doing pretty well. My new N42 block will just be out of those specs, but the pistons seem 'tight' in the bore.
  6. Yeah I have the haynes manual as well...but I would like to get people's experiences. i just bought a short block for about 30 USD....its better that the block i had, but still has a slight ridge on the 1st and last bore. I think I will be happy with this block, I figure that since I am going to all of this effort to rebuild the engine, I may as well do it properly Ray Edit: When I say 25 thou...I mean .025 in.....not .25mm
  7. I dont have a mic so I cant measure the bore accurately, but I have testing the ring end gap...and with new rings, the top ring has a gap of about 25 thou.... Im off to the wreckers to see what the measurements are with some other L28s....but from this measurement it looks like I might need a new block right ? (PS...I guess its pretty obvious by now that I'm rebuilding my engine and its my first time :paranoid: ) Ray
  8. I was all ready to put my engine back together until I noticed that one of the pistons was different from the rest (second hand engine, see other post). Now it looks like I may have to use my flattop pistons, which didnt come with rods. So....Im thinking of putting the pistons on top of the rods and getting them balanced.Do I really need to get the flywheel, crank etc balanced as well? I dont see why I should, Its not going to be a race car, its not going to see high RPM (max 5.5k) and its just going to be a daily driver. I've heard that the L28 crank is already quite well balanced and as long as its not a racing engine, it shouldnt need to be touched. Any advise from ppl who have been in this situation and balanced/not balanced their internals ? Ray
  9. In the haynes manual it says that I should put some 'jointing' compound onto the main caps when I install them. What compound are they referring to? Also...does anyone put loctite on the backside of their bearings when installing them ? Cheers Ray
  10. PUlled the head from another standard L28....this one had '23' printed on top of the piston head....now Im even more confused
  11. cleaning the carbon from the pistons I pulled from My L28...and they say Y34 on the top. I wouldnt have thought anything of it, except that one piston is differetnt, it says 'std' and appears to have a deeper dish than the Y34...any ideas which is the standard L28 one and where the other type came from ?
  12. It is relatively common knowledge that US dyno's often produce optimistic numbers. The types of Dyno's are actually different from Australian, the differences were explained to me before, can't remember though.
  13. Why does anyone want the prices of Zeds to rise !?!? I cant understand it...Im not going to sell mine, so why do I care if its worth $15,000, or $50,000. I didnt think that most of the crowd here were the "I wouldn't sell my zed...unless it was the right price"...I guess economics always wins out :disappoin Meanwhile If I want to buy a 240 to do up I have to pay $4,000 for a rusted out bucket of junk Bring those prices down I say !
  14. Hi, I have a calender clock that I may want to sell, just gauging what sort of interest is out there for it. Ray EDIT: This unit does NOT need an oscillator unit. It is out of a 260z
  15. Just wondering if anyone would be interested in this item? Cheers Ray
  16. Exactly...with plenty of patrol blocks out there who is to know what they have until they pull their gbox off...
  17. Anyone have some spare halfshaft bolts or know where I can get em? I was putting my diff back in the 260 and found I was missing about 4 of the suckers !! :nervous:
  18. sBlake, you might be right. I just rang up a autobarn and they have two clutch listings for the Z..and one of those is the same part number as it is for the patrol. The extra flywheel bolts were news to me though... Only thing to do is to take the fly wheel with me when I go and get a clutch
  19. , I didnt look properly...i thought it was vented hoods...
  20. Just wondering how I can tell the difference between a Patrol flywheel and a Z flywheel? ONly reason I ask is that me and Deus Ex both have an F54 block, when he went to get a clutch, he had to get a patrol one as the Z one didnt fit...we didnt take any measurements though so I cant remember what size it was. Anyone know a way I can tell without buying one to see if it fits ? Cheers
  21. IIRC mine cost around $700....
  22. After doing a bit of searching I've found that they effectively bring a L28 block down to 2.4L. Apparently some pl do it to pay less car tax in japan :cross-eye
  23. I have heard a few ppl allude to (Alan in particular) putting an L20 crank into an L28 block, and that some race cars in japan run this setup. Anyone here seen it in action, or have any more details on it (i.e rods, etc and HP) ? Oh and BTW....anyone knows if Y70 head was offered on anything other than an L20 ? Cheers
  24. Try datfreak, I sold him a set a while ago
