Brake Shims
not too long ago I bought a set of shims and all the rest of the caliper hardware (pins, clips, and springs) from a local parts store. I forget what brand was on the box, but when I opened the box there was a paper tag inside the plastic bag that contained all of the parts with the name "Girling" on it. IIRC it was less than $20 and I got all new everything (except pads). I also use silicone brake grease and shims in combination.

Battery tray ugly
well, your gonna need welding anyway, so probably not a big deal, right? What would have been a better option? Chisel and hammer? I wouldn't think so. What else could be used?

Original Keys
Now, I don't know for sure the progression of keyhead shapes, but I can tell you that my Unkle and I both bought complete OEM locksets from Courtesy Nissan about 2 years ago that were reported to be among the last 10 complete locksets in the USA. Both of the locksets that we purchased came with the "middle" (rectangular) style of Keyhead shown in post #2

How did the spot weld cutter work? Was it worth buying/using?

Kurt, I'm sure no one thought the Futureliner would bring $4M (there may have been a bid retraction, or misunderstanding as they later reported the sale price at $4M, down from $4.1M). The announcers said the seller hoped to get $600K. Bet he was SHOCKED. The report I heard was that there are only 3 operable Futureliners remaining of the original 12 made in 1950 by GM. Pretty impressive, and rare bird IMO. My Dad and Uncle say that they remember a visit by one of them to the town that they grew up in. I love watching B-J Scottsdale, I think I'm going to attend next year (spectating only, of course). Gets my blood pumping for classic automobiles and the coming racing season as well.

Not sure I agree that the Hagerty Newsletter agrees with the statements made in this thread. Perhaps a re-read of the newsletter and the thread are in order? Yes, prices are going up for Z's but they are still worth FAR, FAR less than the Detriot Muscle Cars that crossed the stage at B-J for huge $$$$. We're talking apples and coconuts in making a comparison between 240Z's and a$1.1M '70 Chevelle. Obviously 240Z's don't command the same interest as the Chevelle currently, or there would have been a Z selling in the same price range. (Note: There wasn't even a Z sold a B-J this year, AFAIK) My original post said that it will be many years before a 240Z commands $75K. I stand by that statement. Will a Z ever make it to $75K (or $1.1M), yeah at some point in time, but I'd be surprised if $75K happened before the end of the decade. MY OPINION. Ron posted that: "I can tell you that today it would cost you $35K to $40K, so a $50K Z car is not out of the realm of reality at some point in the near future. Well, that "may" be true, (I would have said "realm of possibility") but it is still 30% below the figure that I mentioned. I invite y'all to PM me with the details of the first $75K 240Z to change hands. FWIW, I think Bill Ramsey has one for $75.00

Nope, I just have a different opinion. Nothing more than that.

Off topic electrical question about diodes.
I don't think all 6 are used as brake lights (at least they aren't on my 240Z), and considering how bright they are, and considering the lense it/they will shine through, one (or even all 6) won't do much as a fog lamp. your imagination is far more fanciful than mine!

you're entitled to your estimation, certainly. as am I entitled to mine.

Off topic electrical question about diodes.
i didn 't realize he was asking about diodes for other purposes. I thought he meant "light duty" wiring. can't imagine why one would need or want a diode in wiring for lighting purposes.

Original Keys
yeah, the ones like your original are not available anymore. seriously, Nissan changed the design at some point in time, several times. Early 240Z's had one sided keys, and some had different placement of the gooves along the shank of the key. There are keys with different shaped keyheads (at least 3 three that I am aware of) throughout the years of S30's sold in the USA.

Off topic electrical question about diodes.
One of the former members of classiczcars (bambikiller240), has an article about the change to IR alt which includes the info your asking about. It used to be in the Tech forum, but he pulled it, and now offers it directly to interested people. I'd suggest contacting him by PM for a copy of the instructions.

I asked Dave this question in a PM and he confirmed that you wouldn't have to alter the OEM wiring.

What club features do you like or want?
yes it was, and the mail list is still alive (you can sign up via link on the www.classiczcars.com Home page) and is still specific to 240z's, but it's not very active anymore.

That is a typo on B-J's part. If you look further through their records you'll note the same car (same pic and same vin) sold a year or two later for less than $7,500 (I think it was $6K IIRC) a $75K 240Z is a complete wet-dream fantasy, and will be for many years to come.

4-screw SU's and the coolant-heated manifold
The coolant can and will flow through the "manifold" (both halves) whether the carbs have a coolant passage or not. Look at the manifold and you will see that even the manifold at the bottom of the ZTherapy picture is set up to accept engine coolant flowing through it. Note the water fitting at the front and rear of the manifold assembly, and the water pipe connecting the two manifold castings. Also 1971 Z's (I'm not sure about 1970 Z's) had the water pipe that loops around the back of the engine and connects to the back of the manifold by way of a short hose. However the early manifold doesn't have the holes in the carb mounting surface to allow water into the carbs themselves. Prior to 72 I don't believe that there was a thermostat to control the water flow through the manifold. BTW, looking at SteveinOakland's photo's, it appears (from the brake system valve mounted on the firewall) that he has a very late 72, or 73 240Z chassis (70,71, and early 72 Z's didn't have that), but the balance tube shown is a very early one with the vac/brake booster fitting at the rear, where 72/73 (at least) Z's had balance tubes where the vac/brake booster fitting was on top of the balance tube. Also his intake manifold doesn't have the thermostat which would control water flow through the manifold which leads me to believe that his intake/balance tube is from a 70/early 71 engine. In regard to the "Welded" notation in the ZT picture, It's a pity that the picture is no longer shown with the original explanation that accompanied it when Scott Bruning (original owner of ZTherapy) posted it on the original ZTwebsite. At that time there was text which described in detail the differences in the linkage and what was welded and what wasn't welded.

How do I remove pistons from the caliper?
compressed air is available at many neighbors, auto shops , and gas stations, (perhaps at one near you?) But one needs to make a tiny bit of effort to look for it and ask for the favor of using it. I haven't had a problem getting access to it for the 5 minutes it takes to get-r-done. just don't bother them when they are busy.

This is Vulgar!!! Read at your own discretion.
Sorry to hear that it happened. I know how pissed I'd be if that happened to my car. I doubt it was done by one of the open-minded, progressive citizens of the city, and it certainly wasn't directed at you personally. Considering the very high number of homeless people (95% of which are drug adled, and completely irresponsible) that flock to, and infest SF; I suspect it was one of these jerks who ruined your evening. I frequently visit the city by the bay and EVERY TIME I go there I can count on observing homeless people shooting/smoking drugs in enterance ways to buildings, crapping and urinating in alleys, badgering citizens for $$ and then heading for the corner liquor store to buy a 40oz. beer or a pint of cheap brandy.

My dealings with the local HOA ...
maybe the neighbors got letters too, but they are simply ignoring them, and you could get away doing the same. (?) no one ever promised that life was fair. Of course you could complain to the HOA about the other people getting away with something if that'll make you feel better. Better to concentrate on moving into your new place than dwelling on this issue, IMO. just my 2 cents

'73 240Z $500 - advice !!!
Your figures and advice are good Gary, I wasn't even factoring in Paint and bodywork other than patching minimal rust. He could easily be into it for $5K before he's turned it into a nice car. Pete, this car will keep you busy (and broke) for a whole lot of days when you're "not working".
