Use a pilot bearing puller. Two arms slide into the bushing, crank down the threaded retainer and use the slide hammer to pull it out.
  2. san_maru_zed, They look like the 78 280 type relays. When I get home from OHIO (Athens, GA), I will try to scan a copy for you. Ed Palmer
  3. san_maru_zed Based totally on hearsay (Lawyer term), when I was trying to figure out what I had after acquiring the 78 (I had a 76 and had previously owned a 75), a local tech told me that the 78 harness was used for only part of one year here, but was used until early 80 in OZ. If so, the harness would have 3 pigtails for a four pin relay on the passenger fenderwall. The relays mount behind the black bracket (large L shaped) in front of the battery. Two are the small (appx 1 - 1.25" square) base, one the 1 X 2 base. The latter may have five pins, I can't remember and my schematic is not at hand. By the way, the fuel injection relay on the 75 - 77 was on a pigtail off of the FI wire loom near the ECU connector. If you think of any other questions feel free to email. Ed Palmer/ecp48 Athens, Ga

Hybrid Z had a thread running on this topic. I believe the average for a basically stock 280 was 128 - 139, based on several different cars. ecp48
  5. san_maru_zed, What you are up against are the differences between years of fuel injected Zs and 850/maximas. As to the Zs, the 75 - 77 280 is very similar. the fuel injection relay, (single relay) is located in the left side kick panel, at a height which places it behind the dash. The 1978 280Z has an interim injection system. Three relays, all located under the black relay bracket, in front of the battery on the passenger side fender well. It is quite similar in function to a ZX. The 280ZX also has multiple relays, but they are not all in the same place (from memory). I think one is on the right or passenger side fender wall in a recess in front of the battery and two others are on the drivers fender wall toward the front. The 850 Sedan system is quite similar to the 75 - 77 280, (I used an 850 CPU in my 75 280 years ago). The maxima is close to the ZX, but I can't recall the relay locations. In essense the the 78 280Z was a change over system, moving toward the ZX system, which had the 02 Sensor and other bells and whistles. You must look for the relays, which match the harness (year and donor car) you are installing. Good luck. ecp48/Ed Palmer Athens, GA

I have an old Century Mig that I bought from Sears in about 1987 (working on an IMSA RS Pymouth TC-3 front wheel drive w/ VW power), welding unibody seams. Also own a Lincoln AC-DC Buzz Box and an Oxy-Acetylene torch. I use all three regularly.

  8. I have one on CD Rom, which I bought off of ebay. I would suggest you scan ebay for one. I also bought my 1978 manual there. If I can help by sending a page, let me know. Ed Palmer Athens, Ga

Will the struts and springs fit, yes they will fit, i.e.: bolt up. However, if you want to know if they will work for you, Carl is correct, no they won't work. They drop the car to far, in that the 240 Struts are shorter than the 280 Strut and the springs are only going to make it worse. Speed bumps will be a mountain. Hope this allows you to satisfy your friend. Now if they had adjustible coil overs, you might make them work. ecp48
  10. Dave, Would you consider using used connectors, if I sent them to you? It may take a little time, my local u-pick has been on a crushing kick due to metal prices and 3 280s, 4 280ZX,s and a couple of 300s and a 240 were all crushed, glass doors, etc. ecp48/Ed
  11. Dave, Let me know when you have the 280 wiring ready or if someone is sure that all of the Zs are the same, i.e.: 240 - 280. thanks, ecp48/Ed Palmer Athens, GA
  12. Dave, What about application to a '78 280Z? thanks, ecp48

You need to look at the flange on your headers and see if it is the same thickness as the flange on the intake manifold. If they are the same, use the same washer, no special washer is required. The special washers are used to make up the difference, if you have the very thin flanged headers. My MSA 6/2/1 header has the same thickness flange as the intake. My Pacesetter, coated headers have a thin flange but have small tabs welded to it to make up the difference. Neither require the special washers. Examine your header and choose accordingly. ecp48

I have a set of front frame rails. They came with my 78 280Z, probably Zed findings from MSA. These are four or five years old, still in the box, which has deteriorated. Some very light surface rust, (unprepared metal and sitting in DC for the last five years). If it interests you, make me an offer. ecp48/Ed Palmer Athens, GA

Phred, As usual Stahl makes a super looking header! I didn't know they made one for the L6 Z. Is there any benefit to mounting the glass packs in the center of the system rather than at the end like the twice pipes? I had thought of installing a resonator in the center and leaving my glass packs at the rear. Any thoughts? The crossover you installed is what I'm planning, only a little closer to the header. ecp48

g72s20 If you look at old catalogs from almost every supplier, Sharpe, BRE, even MSA today; they all had a two/twice pipes system. Datsun Competition listed it as well. Don't have my old Datsun Competition catalog handy, or I'd provide the numbers. The MSA 10th Anniversary edition catalog show them on page 44, 70-78 Z with headers was 15-6030. There were three other parts numbers for various years stock exhaust manifolds. The Datsun system was listed as competition only and came with the glasspacks or straight pipes (from a failing memory). Noise/glass packs and a modern trend toward 2.25 and 2.5 turbo type exhaust systems has displaced their popularity. ecp48
  18. Ed According to the L6 engine builder, you would have 9.82:1 without the .040 shaved off the head. You are probably looking at somewhere in the area of 10.5:1 (quick estimation based on the increase in shaving a P90 .080 on a flat top piston block. (Increase from 8.52:1 to appx. 9.82/10:1)

Try your local WalMart. Revell 240Z @10.99. Most have had them for at least a year.
  20. Tomohawk, It is like a transmission cooler. Appx 6 to 8 inches high. Forms a U bend with fins connecting both legs and mounts off the engine, above the power steering pump on a 5.0. On an F-150 Pickup I had (89), it was larger and had tubing which extended the cooler coil to a position in front of the Radiator on the Drivers Side. You should be able to use the smaller unit and mount it where convenient. ecp48
  21. Hey guy, I have an original NOS set of twice pipes, that I plan on installing. 1.75" pipes, glasspacks are 24" long paired with chrome tips. I know the glasspacks will probably need at least resonators on each pipe in the tunnel area, but has anyone used a crossover. On a V-8, the crossover connection smooths the pulses and usually produces more power. If it would remove some of the reported harshness from the twice pipes, it would definitely be a positive. ecp48

  24. What was the price for the reconditioned L6 Injectors. The post just said 15.00 Core. I haven't tried them, but the site looks interesting. ecp48
