  1. That wasn't a half bad looking 240Z either. At least the bits that I could see through the flames.
  2. If we can see a photo of the chambers on the E88 then we could probably tell you which of the four versions of the E88 cylinder head you have. Also, which pistons do you have, flat top or dished in your L28? Seeing as you had the head off it'd be easy to see.

    Have you heard of E-bay?
  4. Ampco and Atsugi are the two names I've seen cast into L-6 pistons. I'm not sure if any of the numbers cast into the pistons mean anything specific. They will also have a little Nissan logo like many of the other parts on the car.
  5. Gaaa. Don't get me started. I've already got 1970 Suburban that needs wiring run, a Z that needs a paint job, a 510 that needs an SR20DET and an L31ET that needs a body shell to reside in. Maybe I could squeeze in a Volvo P1800?
  6. Have you checked to see if the vacuum advance is still working?
  7. No, but I've got pictures of an LD28 in a boat. You can find 'em on the Nissan Diesel boards if you search around on the net. I also thought it could be from a turbo application when I saw an extra tapped hole in the pan.
  8. That's the total for parts and labor? Doesn't sound too bad considering most places are $70+ an hour on labor alone.

The before shot looked exactly like my Z before I scraped off all of the ancient respray. The paint I'm using looks best with a black base layer, so I'll be going that route myself here soon. Looks pretty good for the interim.
  10. The only thing I'd really be worried about is proximity of the top compression ring to the combustion events happening above it. I measured approximately 6.2mm between piston top and top ring on a spare L24 piston I have lying around. I won't have a spare dished 280 piston to measure until next week, but removing 2.667mm of material is quite significant. You said that if you removed this much material from the dished slug that you'd be closer to a “racing piston configuration” Is this going to be a racing motor with a racing motor's longevity?

I just tried and it worked fine for me. Did you right click on the file and select "save file as" or "save link as"?

I agree that it's probably the best combo to use either the N33 or N36 intakes and whichever set of SU's are in the best condition coupled with the thick insulators and bolts. I've done just that. My car is currently running N36 manifolds from a '73 flat top equipped car coupled with thick insulators and their appropriately longer studs. While the intakes were off I took the opportunity to have the extra holes on top for emissions equipment welded shut. My overbored '72 three screw domed SU's are bolted on to them and I'm using an E88 balance tube.
  13. Very nice writeup. Thanks for including the part numbers too. I only have one thing to add. Don't install the upper half of the pump backward, or else the pump will move fuel in the wrong direction and leave you scratching your head as to why your float bowls ran dry. I wonder how I know that?

I just bought a dovetail not that long ago from Courtesy Nissan. I'd assume they're still available.

Don't worry, it's perfectly normal paranoia. I get like that and I currently live in rural Utah with a Z that isn't even painted. I still can't believe I used to leave it untended in mall parking lots in Tempe.

There were four types of E88 available in the states: Very late '71 production (exactly the same as the E31) 9/'71 approx. -7/'72 8/'72-7/'73 8/'73-8//74 Each is different than the other. WABZ has the last one, the 260Z style E88. You can tell from his photo that it's one of the later two E88's because it doesn't have the 'bump' near the spark plug opening (and consequently smaller chamber) that the 9/'71-7/'72 E88 had.

Crosley? Case? Locomobile? Okay, now you're just making stuff up.

No, I meant valve seats. I've seen pictures of NOS new in box cylinder heads, and they had guides installed, but no seats. Nissan didn't put hardened valve seats in our cars until sometime around late '77.

It's a 260Z cylinder head. In the U.S. it came on the '74 260Z only. Not sure about the nuances of their application in other countries. 47.8cc Open combustion chambers, 42mm intake valves and 35mm exhaust valves. If it has valve seats installed they'd probably be bronze.

Introduzindo o Datsun Zé. Novo para 1970. Um carro esportivo trazendo a exelência japonês. I've never thought about it that way. In Portuguese Z is pronounced Zé, but Zé is also the short form of José, or Joseph. So if the 240Z bore the same name plaques in Portuguese speaking countries it could possibly be called the 240 Joseph.

The gallery was made with Flash, so the only reasonable way to save those pictures to your hard drive is to do a screen capture of each of them, one by one, and paste them into a graphics program and save them individually. Either that or you'll need to sign up for Kodak's program that'll let you save the photos.
  22. I tried to find components that came with good recommendations on quality and longevity in real world use on Z cars. Then I called around to find out who had the best price on them. This is what I can remember purchasing: ITM pistons and rings with chrome top ring. Clevite rod and main bearings. Cloyes timing chain kit. Fel-Pro front cover gaskets, oil pan gasket, head gasket, rear main seal kit (no, it doesn't leak), valve cover gasket. Nissan oil pickup tube gasket, thermostat housing to head gasket, oil pump gasket. MSA header/intake gasket, Turbo oil pump (Paraut brand). The Brass core plug set I purchased from the local BAP. Everything except the parts I ordered from MSA I purchased locally and only had to visit two or three stores to pick it all up.
  23. Wow. I've never even been able to find a large image of one of these on the internet. I would love to own one if I happened to have an extra 40k.

No, really, that's about it. Nissan didn't really keep any sort of records for these cars. I've never heard of them having any form of database of VIN's and configurations for each vehicle. Aside from general figures for how many Z cars were produced per year there isn't much else. What other kind of info are you looking for? It has a fuel injected L28 engine (N42 block), N47 cylinder head, 8.3:1 compression ratio, that kind of information?

Just curious, but what year is your Fairlady with the Y70?
