  1. Thanks Chris!!! I don't want to intrude on the Z desktop thread w. 510 images You can see my photo sets here. Click on the 510 set and you can see hundreds of photos. My dad's Z collection and his current 71 resto are on there along with my BMW build. http://www.flickr.com/photos/14049800@N00/sets/ This is my project build on the 510 forum as well. http://www.the510realm.com/viewtopic.php?f=27&t=9231
  2. Awesome. Would love to meet you guys sometime. My dad and I both live in Richmond. There is a killer RB26TT powered Z here in Richmond
  3. Do not use the valve cover bolts!!!! There should be a hook on the front for this very reason. It may be missing though. You could leave the manifold attached and use that for the rear. Try and find a large threaded hole and a bolt on the front side of the block. For my 510, I borrowed a factory L series bracket that came on the front of his motor for this. For the rear, I threaded an exhaust manifold bolt in and used that put a chain on that.
  4. Agreed^ Start buying some tools. Find a local Z enthusiast and trade beer for some good ole learning
  5. What you really need to do is find a local enthusiast who doesn't mind giving you a hand and showing you the ropes. Someone on this forum will probably reply before too long. Just make sure your willing to help them out with extra cash, beer, food or all of the above You may also be able to post on craigslist requesting a fellow Z enthusiast's help for the aforementioned. The best investment you can make is a good book on the car and a good set of tools. Any job is fairly easy with the right tools and the right place to work. The best is if you have access to a garage where you can have the car down for a few days in case you find a problem that gets worse before it gets better I think an extra daily driver is crucial for owning a Datsun. Not that they are problematic. You just often find yourself trying to make them perfect.
  6. Not too bad of a lesson at $100. At least he didn't charge you $1000 to change your oil
  7. Sheesh!! My BMW mechanic charges me $75 an hour. This is a great job to start learning about your car with!!! It should be super easy on the 280!!!
  8. Install them so the Eibach words are facing right side up
  9. Here is a cool photo I took of one of my dads S30's a week ago. Seems to be a perfect photo for this thread
  10. All this talk about the Shelby. I want to know where I can get a newspaper box hood scoop for the other car!!!!
  11. Hahaha. 04. Sorry didn't realize

Hooray!!! I hope I didn't offend you with my previous post. I wasn't trying to talk down on you or anything I just would hate to see you create a whole new can of worms by trying to DIY on something that you were not sure about.
  13. My twin 44's had slightly different readings similar to this as well. The adjustment needed was at the idle stop plate adjustment screw. I don't know if this is what you need just trying to help. They needed to have the same idle stop placement before the individual adjustment screws were synced. I think the first two ended up being around 1 1/2 turns and the rear two were at 2 turns.
  14. I did. I drained all the gas. Let them sit out for a bit and then mailed them to Todd wrapped in a trash bag and then well insulated in a box. I believe he charged a few hundred $. I can't remember the exact amount as it was a while ago. It also depends on what needs to be done. He does a superb job!!

I think it's best that you try and find someone local to help Better to be patient or pay a little extra rather then damage something critical. Have them show you how to do the basics and then work your way up. One of my friends tried to change the oil in his G35 and instead drained the auto trans. Then filled the engine with 6 more quarts of oil on top of the oil already in there!!! He blew oil out under the hood all over and was wondering why his trans was making funny noises
  16. Saw this on CL. No affiliation. I think this is a Z and not a ZX by the description but I apologize if this is posted in the wrong section. http://richmond.craigslist.org/cto/1183591328.html

No I meant going into a cup or some other container. And yeah. Don't forget to keep adding fluid to the master cylinder. BTW, you don't use trans fluid. The clutch hydraulic system is not tied into the transmission. Transmission fluid is added under the car through the transmission itself.

You can get self bleeders online. Otherwise you have to have someone in the car. You run a piece of clear tubing over the bleeder nipple running to some sort of catch container. Then loosen the nut. The person in the car presses down on the pedal to release the air while the nut is loose. When the person has the pedal to the floor, tighten the nut and then have them release the pedal. Continue to do so until only fluid comes out the tube. Make sure they don't let go of the pedal while you have the nut loose for you will suck air in the line. I believe you could also do the same by yourself only you need a long piece of tubing that can go into a container of the hydraulic fluid for the clutch. You need to have enough fluid in there so that the line goes deep enough to prevent sucking air. Much easier with a helper though. I don't know if you have to do this at the master and the slave though.

Master cylinder is under your hood access door and should have a bleeder nipple on it. The clutch master cylinder should be the smallest one closer to the passenger side. Slave cylinder is under the car on the passenger side bolted to the trans and should also have a bleeder nipple. It should look sort of like this http://mustyoldparts.com/catalog/zen-cart-v1.3.8a-full-fileset-12112007/images/31470%2012092.jpg
  20. Good write-up Carl. I even plan on getting the speedo gear that will throw my speedo way off so that if I do get a ticket, I can throw that in and get the calibration done which may get me dismissed in court
  21. Does your car have the original 4 speed or a 5 speed? There are many different speedo gears available for Datsuns. They go in the transmission. There are also a number of different rear ends that people use in the Z. You need to figure out what you have before trying to determine which speedo gear is correct. At least that is the case for the 510's.
  22. looking good. I didn't think I would like the spoiler color matched but looks very nice in silver!!!
  23. I believe my dad has OEM exhaust he may try and sell. One piece of advice that may bring up quite a bit of discussion. I believe these cars had single stage paint jobs. I would NOT go back to the single stage. This color will look incredible with base/clear as you mentioned but will not be the stock process.
  24. Wow!!! Quite a project. Looks to be very straight other than the wheels arches. Reminds me of my dad's current resto Take a look sometime. The safari gold will grow on you. If done well it is an absolutely beautiful color!!! http://www.classiczcars.com/forums/showthread.php?t=25643 Excited to see your progress. We need more of these types of threads with the build process and technical info.
  25. Agreed^ And if the installer does a good job it shouldn't leak anyway.
