Differential Play
Lots of people install R-200's whether they need it or not. If you drop a V-8 or engine with tons of power in your Z, you probably need one. If not, you're wasting money.

Determining if eng/trans are original -- eg, matching numbers?
The 240Z had the engine serial number on the engine compartment nameplate. I believe you are correct that a 5-speed was an option on the 280Z.

Head or not to head...that is the question
So John, think you can continue with the stock manifold if you go with a mild cam upgrade?

MSA exhaust questions
Twice pipes have been discussion ad nauseum since at least the 1990's. From what I remember about all those discussions, the general sentiment was that they didn't make your car perform any better than a good single pipe exhaust. This even goes back to the Internet Z Car Club mailing-list days. Remember, it's a 2.4-2.8 liter six, not a 7 liter V-8. In fact I might even argue that a twice pipe has less effective flow than a single pipe system. Your going to have turbulence along the boundary, and a twice pipe probably has more surface area. I know there were some people back then that actually ran flow tests on different configurations....we definitely had some exhaust fanatics in the group. There was even a discussion about inserting a stainless braided section after the downpipe to reduce vibration in the system (less noise). Those discussions use to be on the Z-31.com. You can search at this site if you like. http://www.z31.com/izccarchives/

A review of what's gone - period 240Z exhausts
There are no labels, but I'm going to say that mine is like the SuperSprint system. The bottom pic in Arne's post shows the chrome better. It's like that. The two bullet mufflers are definitely like canisters, and are not smooth at each end like the Ansa or Targa systems. And of course the two pipes are cut off straight and are the same length.

Head or not to head...that is the question
The Ansa muffler on your 260Z look exactly like the one on my Z, and was there in '92 when I bought it.

Motorsport Auto heater control panel
Spoke to Arron (sp?) at MSA yesterday. They will exchange the part. He says the original Nissan parts were not of great quality either, due to the limitation of the process. Arne, the entire part is chromed and then painted, apparently just as Nissan had done. Bottomline is that he believes that the quality is as good as an original Nissan part. In that case, I suppose nothing more could be expected. In fact if the quality were better, then I suppose some would have issue with authenticity, but that's another discussion. I'm just looking for something at least as good as original. The part I received was a prototype that was not suppose to be shipped, as esprist stated. I'm guessing that Nissan chose this process for cost. Chrome was probably less costly at that time, and obviously to reproduce the part it would make sense to use the same process. If I knew more about chroming plastic I could say for sure.

Are you associated with MSA?

Motorsport Auto heater control panel
I'm not going to do anything with this part. I just wonder how it got past the stringent QA process at MSA. I mean, I doubt I'm the only person that can see this.

I'm sorry Terry, but I'm going to have to ask you to remove that Fram oil filter.

If I were designing a modern 240Z......
.....this is where I'd be headed. And this is what Nissan SHOULD have done.

I don't call that first class chrome.

Strong fuel smell in the car when I turn LEFT
There is a nylon plastic connector from the filler neck to the hose going to the evaporator tank. I had this fitting fail in tension (spiral cracking), so I replaced it with a copper fitting. No more gas fumes.

Anyone else buy one of these (Code: 40-3401A)? First I do appreciate someone taking the initiative to produce these. Nevertheless, the chrome work could have been done better. For the $270 I paid for a piece of plastic with a few cents worth of chrome, I think it shouldn't look out of the box like a panel that's been in a car for 20 years. The chrome work is not first class. Unfortunately this is probably the only option available outside of finding a Nissan part somewhere. My primary complaint is with the lettering. The lettering looks worn and thin. I haven't decided whether to return it or not. You can get some optional decals for later styles ($25), which I also purchased. If you're looking for a concours part, I don't think this is it.
