I have a couple of decent tight hinge sets left over. I went through my stash last year and threw away 2/3's of them because of excessive pivot point slop. There is just about no way to keep you hood aligned with sloppy hinges. PM me and we'll get some on the way.
  2. This is not complicated, Captain Obvious is correct. The sprocket connects to the cam and the cam is free to spin. The sprocket's clocking doesn't change chain tension, outside of the fact that the valve springs can statically load the sprocket to favor a direction. When the sprocket is removed and set to various positions, it can feel as if it's altering chain tension. With the engine running, chain tension is the unchanged although cam timing would be different.
  3. Hey Guys, I was sent here from the Hybridz forum. They said you do more factory and stock cars so it might be a better fit. I wanted to introduce myself. I bought this car 2 weeks ago from an old lady down the street. It was her husbands and he bought it in 1973. The build date is 6/1971. He never drove it in the rain and kept it nice. It hadn't been run in 7 years and hadn't left the garage in 10. I put gas in the carbs and tank, aired up the tires, fired it up and drove it home. It has 98k miles and service records since 1973. I have never owned a z before. I have been reading a bunch and getting familiar with it. So far I have changed the tires, belts, fuel lines, trans fluid, differential fluid, brake fluid, shoes, pads, and unstuck a brake cylinder. I have some interior parts coming to freshen up the interior. I polished the wheels today and tomorrow I am going to buff out the paint. This winter I am going to do the trans and differential seals, suspension, bushings, steering ect.. I am preparing a laundry list now. Aside from the suspension, the car runs and shifts well except when downshifting into third. It grinds every time, no matter what I do. None of the other gears grind. My buddy suggested double clutching but that hasn't worked. The fluid in the trans was thick and smelled like gear oil. I put in red line I think the PO used the wrong fluid. I was reading that the wrong fluid can damage the syncros. Is there anything else I can try to make downshifting into third smoother. Bill
  4. Captain, cant believe you were able to see those numbers on the piston head. I cleaned up a piston and now its clear. So, I’m sill not sure if this engine has been rebuilt. Can’t find compelling evidence except that the head gasket doesn't have Nissan written anywhere on it. The only other evidence I might have found is the cam sprocket. My 77 engine with the N47 head has a different looking sprocket. It has 3 holes vs the one on the 82 P79 engine which has 8 holes. Now, when I look for replacement timing chain kits online they all seem to have 8 hole sprockets. So the question is, is this an aftermarket sprocket and does the stock Nissan sprocket have three holes. See below pics. Chain kits see to run from $97 to $150. Is there any specific brand I’m looking for? I also need to find a replacement harmonic balance and oil pan. I could probably salvage mine but this is not how I roll. I like to do it right the fist time and don’t want to put beat up parts on a rebuilt engine. Replacements aren't cheap. $190 for and oil pan and >$200 for a harmonic balancer. If anyone has some good ones sitting in their garage or barn they want to sell let me know, Tomorrow, I’m pulling the pistons and crank out....probably not required I know but down the rabbit hole I go and I hope you can help me when I try to climb back out, A note: my goal is to keep this build around $1000. This includes the engine cost so I have $600 more to go before I need to make compromises. Anyway see my pics below.
  5. Thank man, I plan to keep it as stock as possible. I scored a bunch of parts yesterday. A lady in Elizabeth, CO has a parts hoard. She sells parts on Ebay under Z car crazy. I got a right front marker light, a nice rear tail light, a window crank, a new style 240 mustache bar, a new style transverse assembly, and a used untested transmission for $415. Since I need to take the trans out anyway I am going to swap in the other one and see if it works. I can return the used trans if there is a problem and I found all the parts to fix the original one if I need to. Today I am going to start soaking the bolts with PB blaster and order parts. I will be ready next week to get started. I am pretty excited.

  7. I did guarantee it! Hope it's not too bad. I've got a soft spot for the early 260s. (And as you've found... The early 260's have soft spots).
  8. LOL. Well if you ask me, the problem isn't the balance tube. The problem is that you removed the flat tops. Good luck with the project. Too bad you won't get to enjoy it much this season.
  9. The 280 just sold for $22,000 on BaT and now it is going to Dubai, http://www.tominiclassics.com/ I made my parts and materials cost back and a little bit for my labour, I'm happy boy. Shopping list, another Z, bigger compressor, more lights in the shop, a new Tig welder?, maybe a spot welder too, ...
  10. Thanks man. This forum looks like a better fit. This car is too nice to modify. Some of the paint is original but I don't know how much. I polished the wheels last night and spent 4 hours buffing the paint and polishing the chrome today. I hand polished it using some light compound and then put a coat of wax on it. It came out nice, but it is still a 20+ footer .
  11. Nice car! Welcome to the classic Z car forum. Hybridz.org calls us "purist". Not a bad classification in my opinion. If that's the original paint a good cut and buff will make it look like new. The two pics in my signature, the one on the left was before cutting and the right was taken after the cut and wax by a pro. I'm too scared to put a wheel on my cars.
