1972 240z rear left blinker and stop light not working

Featured Replies

The left rear blinker and stop light is not working either with the turn signal switch or the hazard switch. I already replaced the burned bulb and still the same. Should i remove and open the turn signal switch for cleaning its innards or could the problem be something else?

Hi, does the back-up (white) light work, no? (when you switch the gears to reverse on contact on!?) then the mass (-) cable on the light unit is defect. You can measure if there is 12v on the light bulb..

The turn signal switch can be worn and it needs just a extra push to work.. i had a 240z that had this problem! but then the control light on your dash does also not work so one could see when it worked and when not!

Thanks for your input! Ill check on that. The weird thing is that even with the hazard switch on only the right tail light blink. The left tail light does not blink either with the hazard switch or the turn signal to the left. All other front and dash light work perfectly. Where do i check?

Pull the bulbs out and grab a meter and start checking the sockets. Look at the FSM for wiring identification.

Reverse lights on both left and right work. Right tail light works perfectly. Problem is only on the blinkers and stop light on the left tail light.

Are you familiar with using a volt meter and reading wiring diagrams? You need to test the wiring in order to trace the problem.

Of course! I just wanted to solve this faster without getting into the wiring diagram! Its really weird that lneither the hazard swich or the ts switch can make the left rear blinker work.

Sounds like you have a harness problem. No easy answer with these cars. Looks like from what you posted earlier the flashers are not the problem. No easy answer here without measurements. Report back on each circuit and go from there.

I'm a bit sleepy.. sorry.. It can be that the back up lights are ground controlled (Because the signal comes from the gearbox that grounds) so the brake light and rear light and the left blinker can have a missing ground.

To be sure you need the wiring diagram from THAT EXACT CAR! Get your meter out! 😊

One very common culprit is the hazard switch. It is the central clearing house that affects turn and hazard signal functions.

Try cycling it several times (like 20) and see if the symptoms change or if the problem solves itself. Remove it and open it to clean the 8 contacts

How do i remove the hazard switch? All tail lights left and right are working. Rear Blinkers and left rear turn signal light are dead!
