SpeedRoo Posted April 13, 2021 Share #1 Posted April 13, 2021 They have the original grey/cream coloured primer on them. Should I strip them to bare metal or just paint over the top?
Patcon Posted April 13, 2021 Share #2 Posted April 13, 2021 Does it come off with lacquer thinner?
grannyknot Posted April 13, 2021 Share #3 Posted April 13, 2021 If they really are NOS then I would wash them well with either hot soapy water or wax & grease remover, give them a light scuff with Scotch pad or 400 grit and paint them.
Patcon Posted April 13, 2021 Share #4 Posted April 13, 2021 I might strip them if it is an uncatalyzed paint. If it doesn't come off with lacquer thinner, then I would do like Grannyknot suggested
SpeedRoo Posted April 13, 2021 Author Share #5 Posted April 13, 2021 Thanks guys...I'll try thinner on them. Were in their boxes since the 1970/80s. Owner passed away and they were never fitted to a car. Saves me doing bodywork straightening the ones on my car out.
dutchzcarguy Posted April 14, 2021 Share #6 Posted April 14, 2021 (edited) I would go back to metal forsure! My painter (pro) advised to go to metal because you would be working on a very old surface and you don't know what it's going to do with the new paint chemicaly.. I would not gamble! take it off! Use a 60 sandpaper on a rotary it go's fast. other painters say do not use chemical stuff to get it of because you have to clean it very well and then still you find it back in the new paint.. they say.. 🙄 Edited April 14, 2021 by dutchzcarguy
Patcon Posted April 14, 2021 Share #7 Posted April 14, 2021 I agree, I would not chemical strip or even blast them. If you decide it needs to come off, then sand it off
SurferD Posted April 17, 2021 Share #8 Posted April 17, 2021 (edited) Agreed take them down to metal. Where did you find them? I need the same parts as I’m sure every S30 owner does. Edited April 18, 2021 by SurferD
