Anyone running MegaSquirt in their Z?

I know that MS used some odd labels for their sensor circuits and often recommend using input circuits that don't seem to match the type of signal being acquired.  But Matt Cramer is familiar with all of that.

Have you been into the MegaManual yet?  Probably worse than digging up old BMW wiring diagrams.

The search box is your best friend...

Not sure what version you have , but it needs to be set up for a VR sensor to read your crank sensor. Both hardware and software needs to be addressed .

this might get you started . It's a steep learning curve and I have to review it myself. I set mine up years ago it seems, but going strong. You might have to play with the air gap to. I run a hall sensor which may be a bit different , but I think the board is set up the same .

Just noticed this thread , sorry I didn't chime in earlier - trying to restore a 72 in my spare time- lol. Feel free to PM me . I haven't touched my MS for a long time, but it's been dam reliable I guess

There is one thing I have learned about MS in the past couple of months and that is ONLY read the manual for the particular variant of MS that you are working with. Manuals of other MS products might be the same on some subjects and  will also be slightly different many subjects, enough of a difference to screw you up.

At this point I'm going to buy a new crank sensor and go through all my wiring again.

Though there are different versions , I believe most need a pull up resistor for a VR sensor. There are also pots to adjust inside on the board . It's a steep learning curve but you'll get it . I've been told the ignition is the hard part with MS , fuel is easier .

You have a VR sensor correct?  I noticed that you have Noise filtering turned " Off " in your Ignition settings. VR sensors and Magnetic sensors usually require Noise Filtering to be turned " ON "  and adjusted to get a strong clean signal.. Hall sensors and Optical sensors usually do not require Noise filtering to be turned on.

" Strong signal" was the wrong wording. I meant " Clean signal." You can have a strong, but " dirty " signal from EMI. That's why you have the VR filters.

Here's a VERY interesting article on VR polarity. Seems BMW may have switched the wires around from normal, and Yellow is negative and Balck is positive. Just came across this, so haven't researched fully.... but very interesting!! VR sensors are very sensitive to polarity. Might be something else to check??

Rising edge versus falling edge.  There's a setting for it.  http://www.megamanual.com/ms2/pickups.htm

Might be GK has already moved on from the BMW parts though.  Said he's buying a new sensor but didn't say if it was Bimmer or DIYAutotune.

You can also use a GM HEI module to convert the VR signal to a square wave.
