How do you set your avatar picture? I am obviously doing something wrong...

Click on the silhouette under your name in the left column on the screen. That should take you to "Viewing Profile". Hover your mouse over the top left corner of the silhouette that came up with your profile details. "Change" should appear on the silhouette. Click on that.

What SteveJ said.  You can also add or change your header image there also.

Couldn't find that. If you look at my profile there is a background that I am trying to make my avatar but I am failing at that.

You may need a smaller picture.

How do I make my picture smaller?

Use a program like Irfanview.

Or MS Paint.

Any photo editing software can reduce your image size easily.  For your Icon picture, it needs to be really small. like 128k and low resolution (72dpi and around 2 or 3 inches big) or something like that. It's not to exact. Just has to be small in size.  If you don't have that kind of software let me know and I can do it for you.

Or, I believe I saw you have a Samsung phone. You can go to Play Store and download free for your phone an app called "PicsArt". It is a camera image editing proggie, that is so easy to use. I have it and edit my photos on the spot when I need to. Then save them where you want, right in your phone. Amazing little app.
