'71 rear hatch strut
I can't get any info from ebay on my prior transaction, too old. Napa sells the following: Hatchback Lift Support Item#: BK 8194147 Price: $28.41 My replacement was not purchased from them, but this apears to be about the same. Rather than having the mounting plates/brackets that the original datsun strut had, mine came with a stud that screwed into one of the mounting holes, one in the body, the other the hatch, then the strut snapped in place over the ball joints at each mounting point. Now, whether this will cause undue stress to the area where the ball stud screws in is another thing entirely because it does not have the force applied over the original flat bracket, just uses one of the existing two mounting bracket holes. But, so far so good.

'71 rear hatch strut
I purchased a replacement strut on ebay last year for my 71Z It did not have exactly the same type of Datsun mounting brackets, but bolted up correctly and works just great. It was not a datsun part, but a replacement. I paid $35 and it works perfectly. I am trying to figure out how to find the seller for you from ebay, but it appears from the ebay site that I can't go back that far. I'll keep looking and see if I can find the seller

gas tanks
I just had my tank boiled out and sealed at a local radiator shop, picked it up today. Lots of rust. They told me to make sure that I replace the fuel filter at least two times to insure that all particulate matter was caught. I paid $135. Tank looks great. Good luck

Looking for Appliance Wheel center caps
That appears to be about the same dimensions externally Arne. I am going to pull the wheel tomorrow and take my calipers and find out what the dimension is on the hole. Thanks Arne. Appreciate the help!

Looking for Appliance Wheel center caps
Thanks for the link Arne. If all else fails I would consider the Enkei caps, but I am not thrilled with the squareness of the cap. I checked with American Eagle today Ron and they no longer make those caps. I am going to try checking with custom wheel shops to see if they might still have some in stock. The Eagle caps are just about the same shape as the original Appliance caps. Thanks all. The search continues...

Looking for Appliance Wheel center caps
Thanks guys. I've been looking for over two months. My wheels are in perfect condition, but the center caps have rust and one was damaged. I found a place in Washington yesterday that has some, three, but the guy wants $250. I like the mesh wheels, they are period correct. But I can't see paying that kind of money for center caps. I could get one panasport rim for that price I'll try and find some after market ones, maybe MSA has some that will fit

Front brake hardware 71
Thanks again Arne. I saw that picture in the FSM but it is not clear as the spring rod is so thin.

Front brake hardware 71
Hi all. Hope everybody is having a good summer so far. 106 today. Whew I just bought rebuilt calipers from MSA. I also bought the Nissan brake hardware package for the calipers. When I unwrapped the rebuilt calipers, they also had hardware, however there was one extra part, besides the shims that came in the package. I gave them the old calipers without breaking them down, so I didn't actually get a good look at how the parts went together. I can figure most of it out except the rebuilt caliper has what appears to be a tension rod/spring, that is not in the Nissan hardware kit. It looks like this goes on top of the antisqueal retainers and is secured by the pins. Is this correct? Do I need to include this rod/spring when I put everything together? Thanks for your advice. I looked in the FSM and Chiltons but did not see this piece, so I am thinking it is a newer ( newer than the FSM anyway) engineering addition.

Differential Housing
While under the rear end of the Z, I noticed alot of grease and oil on the pumpkin. I could not tell exactly where this oil/grease was coming from due to the accumulation of grease/oil. I looked at where the half shafts/rear end are coupled, but it does not appear that the problem came from this area. So I deceided that I would replace the cover gasket. I removed the drain and fill plugs and noticed a thin film of silicone on the back of the plugs.??? Next I pulled the cover. There was a thin film of silicone on the housing itself. As I looked into the housing I viewed some letters that looked like they were hand painted onto the gears with what appeared to me to be the same yellow paint that that auto dismantlers use to mark their parts. Did Datsun also use this paint on original assembly line installed parts? Does it seem that gears have been replaced? Keep in mind this car only has 25,000 miles on it. Did Datsun use silicone gasket sealer in 1971? Wasn't the sealer used like the opaque yellow looking stuff Permatex produces? Strange. I replaced the cover, used black RTV and will wait and see if the leak is still there once it is up and running. Thanks guys

WHich would you rather have(and post why)?
I like the originality of the original 4 speed that came with the car. If I were to have another Z that I could build according to my personal desires for a peformance car, I would go with the 5 speed. Maybe that car will come some day..

Upper Heater Hose
Thanks for the quick response Arne. There is no way to get a stubby on that darn clamp. There is only 1/4 inch of space between the top of the screw and the bottom of whatever is above the hose. I could cut the heater hoses. Good advice about removing the heater box, didn't think of that. I can look in the manual to see how to remove it. I am work as well and don't have current access to my manual. No way to get any type of vise grip on the bottom of the screw either, not enough room. Maybe I can put a cutting wheel on my Dremel and just cut the clamp. I can't remember if there is even enough room to do that. I'll have to look tonight. Yes sir, I plan to replcae the clamp too, especially if cutting it works.

Upper Heater Hose
I almost have all of the hoses replaced in my car. Picked up the replacement upper heater hose from MSA on Friday. Installation on the engine side is a breeze. So next I look under the dash to see where and how the hose connects to the heater core. Keep in mind I have AC on the 71Z, so that cramps my access on the passenger side interior foot well. The hose is secured with the original Datsun hose clamp. But here's the rub. It looks like the clamp was installed before Datsun put the glass and the dashboard in on the assemble line. The phillips head screw on the clamp is pointed towards the sky. Which means there is no way possible to get to it save pulling the dash and perhaps the windshield. There is very little room to get to anything on that side of the heater core from under the dash. Any thoughts guys?

Mysterious bracket
When I started my front cover removal I neglected to take pictures knowing that I would remember how to reassemble the different parts that I removed. Wrong. I have looked through all of my manuals and can find no reference to the location of the bracket that I removed. I have since taken pictures of all steps that I now take in removing different engine parts. Which leaves me with the bracket. I don't know where it goes. I have attached a picture of the bracket. Can somebody clue me in on where it goes? Thanks.. Clueless in Pomona.

Front Pulley removal
I picked up the new woodruff key last night from the dealer. Thanks for all the advice and help guys. My experience so far with this club is that it is a wonderful bunch of dedicated Z people willing to help. I don't think there is a respository of any more Z car related knowledge on this planet than exists here. Hey Stephen, I live in Phliips Ranch, we should get together someday. San Berdu is right down the freeway.
