  1. My 12/70 has all the markings of a series 1 including the rear vents on the hatch. It also has the vents on the pillar post.I can't find any where it was repaired and it all looks original.I can't come up with a reason for both so I was going to fill in the vents on the pillar post.I like the 240Z emblems there.Does anyone see a problem with this fix?

I Just finished parting out a 71 last night. The only thing left on it is some paint and rust.I was going to take it to the scrap metal yard today but in the daylight I found a couple of places not rusted thru. I decided to keep it in case I ever need one of those places for another car that might need it.My two biggest hoards are early radios AM and AM/FM plus ashtrays. I have boxes of them. You never know when one might break.Like every one else that is a packrat I have at least 2 of every thing else. The only thing I don't have is an early throttle knob.I have the square one just not the round one. A knob,A knob, MY KINGDOM FOR A KNOB:D
  3. With these prices in mind I think 60 dollars is a fair price if anybody needs one.I would have put this in the classified section except I thought it might help someone else.I will retract it if this is any problem.

I started out on thicker metal just to get the basics down but I have been working with parts off my parts cars such as hoods and body panels.I took a plasma cutter and made a lot of straight cuts in it and have been trying to weld it back together. I get a lot of burn thru and warpage. I have a millermatic 135 with .023 wire and argon set on its lowest setting.I do have the wire feed slowed until I get more comfortable. I use a autodarkening helment.I don't see how anyone could weld without one. I tried but I was all over the place. Maybe if I speed it up it would help. I have had someone tell me to push not drag. I can't tell the difference.Any suggestions would be appreciated.
  5. I have about 4 or 5 sets of early fsm's in real good condition that I have collected over time.I hate to deal with ebay and I am in a position where I don't have to sell them.A member helped me out when I needed a set so I would let a couple sets go to help out someone else.I have no idea what they are worth so if some members would let me know about what would be reasonable I would let them go.

I have been practiceing on some used parts using the .023 with argon but I still blow holes in the thin metal.I try doing about 1/4 inch at a time and moveing down a little and repeating then coming back and adding another 1/4 inch but it burns thru after a couple of tries. Maybe I am trying to go to fast.I am turned down as low as I can go.Should the metal overlap or fit as close as possible and try to fill in the gap?

I just finished a class on MIG welding because people said MIG would better on the thin metal. I can do alright but I hear people say TIG is better. Most people I talk aren't working on a Z car. I would like to hear from those who have been there done that.

I found this shift boot last night.I just pulled the grommet out and it looks easy to reproduce.

I had a lot of electrical problems with my 70 model.I tried everything I could think of .The lights would go dim,Blinkers worked sometimes, brake lights on and off. Everything was intermitent. After changing out turn signal switch, fuse box, hazzard switch, plus hours and hours of checking I was about to give up and replace the harnesses.I didn,t. Almost a year later my dash cover started squeaking so I pushed it down and every thing worked a while. It did it again and when I pushed on the dash cap everything worked. I checked and where the hazzard switch hole was cut out it was holding the switch halfway sometimes. With most everything going thru the hazzard switch I fixed the dash cap and everything now works.

I find it interesting the way people can misinterprit what a person says just because they cannot see each other and know in what manner a statement was meant.I did not ask my original question underhandedly, mean spirited,to say one car was better than the other,or even jokeingly. I simply had a question I did not know the answer to.I never said or implied that some 280Z owners were not as passionate about their cars as I am my 240. I simply said I have not heard it.After reading some the responses I think the problem could be attributed to the region where I live. I am only 8 miles from the SAC O SUDS where the clerk got shot in the movie My cousin vinny, and 4 miles from the courthouse where the trial was set. I don,t see 5 Zcars a year around this area and they are just passing thru. The comments I usually here is when I drive mine which is rare, people come up to me and tell me about the 240 they used to have or their father had and get all nostalgic about it. Maybe if I was in a 280 they would do the same. But the truth is I did not ask my question to start a pissing contest or any other reason than I am curious. FWIW I can stand flatfooted and wizz over a dumptruck:rolleyes:

I have several I can spare. I don't know if the year makes a difference so let me know and they are yours for just the shipping.

I know I am making a lot of enemies now with this thread but I really can't imagine life without a 240Z. I know I am a little older than some of you but a 280Z is just a cushiony derivitive of a sports car.I bought my first 240 back in 73. It was a 70 model.I fell in love with it at first sight and after driving it I was hooked.Since then I have had many 240's. I have had several 280's,but I never kept one more than a month or two. They just don't have that same feel like you are part of it like a 240 does. They are smoother and cushy yes, but you can,t feel every part working together and listen to every sound as she tells you just when everything is in sync or when something just aint right.I went parts hunting this week and found more 280s and 280ZXs than I could count.I looked thru them and it didn,t bring any emotions at all to see them sitting rusting out except why wasn't someone that loves 280S trying to rescue them.I found only 2 series 1 that were nothing but rusted hulls and I got real sad to see them in such bad shape. At least the owner was trying to make race cars out of what was left.I have never heard any that owned a 280 talk about their Z with real compassion just the usual I like my Z but a 240 owner talks about his Z like it was part of him and how he loves it.Maybe that it is why a 240 is called a classic.I wished I could understand the difference.I guess that is they make so many flavors of ice cream.

I read an article about a guy that spent a couple of years restoring a car, while he was doing all the mechanical things and wiring along with everything else hard that goes along with restoration all he heard at shows was how good the paint job was.It seems most people don't realize the hard work that goes into a restoration just what the paint looks like.He decided if he was going to do all the work he was going to take all the credit so he learned to paint and now he can take pride in the whole job.I am taking a class in paint and body next quarter at a local college so I can do it all.

I don't remember the name of the movie but I can't believe it has never been mentioned on this site.It was in the mid 70's about a 240Z attacking cars on the freeway.I have seen it twice because I will never forget how bad it was.The funniest part that stood out is in every persuit shot another hubcap would be missing or replaced in the next shot even the same chase. It was a bad remake of a movie Christene the car that killed people.Somebody other than me had to see it?

I have moved and it has hampered me from a lot of post plus I have been busy. I heard the fellow was a real psyco from the people that lived near where the cars were.I heard he had tried to kill someone that went on his property and even tried to kill his own father. His father died and left him a fortune including the property where the cars are. I was told he bought a bunch of land out in the woods and lived in a little shack with no water or electric and drove an old ford crown vic.My wife asked me to stay away from him and forget about it.NO WAY. I kept on until I traced his place down and sure enough it was way ouy in the middle of nowhere. It had a dirt road that disappeared into the woods with a chain across it and a bunch of no tresspassing signs all over.It was dark when I found it so I left a note asking him to call me.I never heard from him so I went to the courthouse and got his real name and address.I went to his house and found it was all just rumor how bad he was. He lived in a neighborhood where the houses start at about 400,000. He wasn't home but I met his wife and asked her about the cars. She was as nice as she could be and told me she had been trying to get him to clean up that property accross town. She said she would ask him if I could clean it up for the cars. After a day or so I called back and she said he didn,t want fool with the place right then but would let me know.I called her every several weeks or so but kept getting the same answer maybe later. My wife washed my billfold and I didn,t have the number so last week I drove back to his house and he was outside washing his car.I told him who I was and that I was real interested in the cars,Without turning around he said he had just give them to a guy if he would clean up the property.Iasked him if the guy would sell any of them and he said he would ask and he walked back into the house.I have been depressed ever since and still find my eyes watering up once in a while but I don,t know what I could have done different. When I first wrote about the cars I didn,t want to mention How crazy the man was supposed to be or how mean because it was rumor. He seemed ok when I met him I guess he just didn,t need the money.

Heh Guys it's been a while since I have posted on the club but I have been real busy getting ready to start my restoration.I wanted to make sure I had all I need so I wont get distracted so I took a mig welding class and got me a welder.I picked up every tool I can possibly think of and have 3 large buildings to work in. I designed and built what I think is the perfect rotiserie.I spend at least 3 hrs A night welding and perfecting my hap hazzard ways of doing things and to quit taking short cuts.It is time to quit stalling and start working on the cars. What I can't decide is whether to start on the worst one for practice or jump onto one I want to keep? I have stripped several for parts and now I have 3 series1 and 3 series2. I read all the work and effort the members put into the cars and I get cold feet when I try to decide where to start.I just hope I can do half the job you guys do.Any suggestions on where and how to start would be greatly appreciated.I have the books, tools, parts, room, time, and money, I just lack confidence.

I want to thank everyone for their comments regarding the ethics of both solicited and unsolicited info. The few times I have been asked to look at Z's in my area only one time was it an obvious attempt to mislead a buyer. The other times it was plain the seller knew nothing about the car and was unaware of the hidden rust areas that were plain to someone that with knowledge of Z's.Floorpans rusted out, rails rusted into, under back hatch bad and the list goes on.When it was pointed out to the sellers all but one appeared to be embarressed and changed their description or was willing to negotiate a lower price.Like said earlier I try to stick with facts and things I see good as well as bad when I describe a car.I have been asked as an opinion how much would I pay for the car and my answer is what I think the car is worth to me.I also ask the prospective buyer if they are not interested in the car at that price would they mind after they make the final decision not to buy would they mind if I made the same offer that I would not try to underbid them. So far I have not bought any that I was asked to look at.The main point is I don't think most sellers are dishonest they just don't know about their cars.I feel bad busting their bubbles when they were told they have a rare sports car and find out it is a rust bucket with a lot of major problems.I also remember when I started collecting Z's and wished I had someone to point this out to me.From now I will continue to look at all Z's in my area andwill report on the facts as I see them and let the buyer double check before jumping blind into a " bargain"

I have been pondering whether it is ethical or not to warn others in the club if I was to offer unsoliceted information regarding z cars listed on ebay that I have personaly looked at and know for a fact they are not even close to being what they are described as. I have been asked to look at a few in my area and told the member what I thought the car was worth and to deccribe what I saw.The few times I did this the cars were in bad shape and the member did not bid on the cars.I feel I did a service to these members.I am not an expert by any stretch of the imagination but I do have a lot of knowledge of z cars and I did stay at a Holiday Inn Express once.I would never mislead anyone intentionaly so I could purchace a car myself.I guess the question is should I inform the club if I see red flags all over a car for bid without being asked?
  20. Like my post reads Better lucky than good,I have hit the jackpot again. My house is real small but overlooks a big lake. The problem has been I have had nowhere to work on my cars. I found a place 3 weeks ago and moved in last week.I am still moving my cars and parts to the house. The good news is it has a 18x30 shop right behind the house.Right behind that building is a 18x40 building set up for a shop behind is another building 18x20 to use as a shop.Next to it is a semi enclosed pole barn 40x40. Next to one of the work shops is a 15x20 office with a walk in deer cooler.or beer cooler as needed. All on 12 acres in the middle of BFE.What I need now is where to get all the info possible to do body and paint work for beginners.I am starting a welding class in 2 weeks.I want to be able to do everything myself.I have 10 Z cars to practice on. This is an open invitation to any Z member to bring their car to work on it or paint or whatever needs doing.I figure there is room for at least 25 Z cars indoors and several hundred outside. The best news is I still have my lake house 20 min away so it can be used for company.

I am planning to swap my 4 speed to a 5.When I drive on open roads it just doesn't feel right in 4th gear because of the rpm.I am always trying to shift one more time.According to the book 4th gear in a 5 speed is the same ratio as 4th in a 4 speed. The only difference is overdrive in the 5 speed.I plan on keeping the 4 speed in case I sell the car or I ever want to go back original. It is an easy swap.

I use my dodge 3500 to pull campers. With different weight numbers all over the truck and campers I tried to find what they all meant and how much could I go over some of the limits.I knew I could pull more than listed. It was finally explained to me like this.Engineers calculate these based on SAFETY.How much a vehicle can safely weigh, haul, and stop based on different conditions.Exceeding these numbers will not necessarily make your wheels fall of but it can void warranties on vehicles, and make you liable if an accident happens. I could be wrong on all of this but it sounded good to me.
  23. I would honestly have to say that has to be the sickest warped sense of humor I have ever read.I don't think anyone on this sight sees anything funny about it.The problem I have with it is now there is someone out there that thinks just like me and I have been told I was one sick puppy.I read this post and I laughed harder than I have in years. My wife said I was sick.Gotta love itLOL One of my favorite quotes comes from a movie where a soldier in a foxhole is scared and crying while bullets and bombs are going off all around and his seargent stands there and says Don't worry kid they can kill you but they can't eat you.

  25. Way to go BD280Z. Glad to know someone willing to save a Z won.I hope you are able to get a title for it and be able to drive it instead of parting it out. There are a lot of great members with a lot of knowledge that will be glad to share their info to help you.Good luck.
