Total Suspension Overhaul
I'd be wondering what sort of damage that may have caused to the chassis. Hopefully none. Can't wait to see the pics. I'm in the process of doing the same thing. The painted parts sure do look mighty purty!

Feeling horny? None for me thanks.
I take that back, I just found that my car has only one horn. Now I need to find one. I am missing the passenger side horn. ANyone have a spare?

Did you cut down your bumpstops?
Thanks for the info Ken. I have the same setup but haven't installed it yet. I have to complete the process of refinishing all the suspension components before I can start putting it all back together. Hopefully I'll be done before Christmas. Sort of an early present to myself. Anyone else have an opinion on this?

Another noob sayin hi
Welcome to the fray. Looks like you've got a bit of work to do.

Did you cut down your bumpstops?
In the installation instructions for my new Tokico springs, it recommends cutting any replacement bumpstops down since the new springs are shorter than stock. In the reference picture it shows 3 bumpstops including one similar to my new Energy Suspension bumpstop. Is this really necessary?

Where is my oil going?
Not at all. Sounds like bull to me. And as Ed rightly points out, when the engine is in the intake stroke, i.e.(sucking) the intake valve is open so there wouldn't be enough vacuum in the cylinder to "suck" oil past the rings. Kragen is not the best place for serious auto maintainence or diagnostic advice. At least not any Kragen I have ever been to.

Engine keeps running after shutoff.
Isn't "running on" something that women to when they get together on groups? Seriously though, "dieseling" is the term I've always heard used. If I remember back to my high school auto shop days correctly, this is caused by a buildup of carbon in the cylinder or on the valves which remains hot enough after you shut down the engine that it causes any unburned fuel left in the cylinder to burn, keeping the engine going for a moment after you shut it off. The carbon build up is usually due to the car running too rich.

difference in E88 heads
I don't have any answers for you but I'd love to know the answers to this as well. I think the E88 heads got bigger combustion chambers in 73' in an effort to lower the compression and reduce emissions. If that's true, I would think that an E88 from a 71 or 72 would be a better choice if you're looking for higher compression or betgter performance, although I'm not sure it would be enough to notice wihtout other mods. Here's a link to some info on various heads. http://www.geocities.com/zgarage2001/z.html

What's it worth? E31 w/SUs attached
Thanks Dogma. I just wanted to make I wasn't straying from the preferred topic list. 240Zman, good to know. I'd rather not be swapping pistons if I don't have to. Is there any issues using flat pistons with a head designed for dished? I know the other way around isn;t good. Just wondering.

What's it worth? E31 w/SUs attached
Thanks for the suggestions Arne. I guess I need to do some more research. At the moment I'm thinking F54 flat top w/N42 although this might get the compression up too high for my street rig(9.82). Is that too high? Perhaps I could just use dished pistons to bring it down a bit(8.29) depending whether they'll work with the N42. Or may be an E88 off a 260Z(8.28). I just didn't like the look of the steel exhaust liners in the P79. Anyway, I think this thread is starting to stray from the classicz preferred topics so I'm gonna go do some research on hybridz.org.

Proud new 1970 240Z Owner!!
Welcome. Prepare to lighten your wallet.

What's it worth? E31 w/SUs attached
Yeah, I think you're probably right Daniel. So, my new plans are to finish the suspension refresh I started, then start collecting parts for an L28 build up. I already have a line on a couple F54 blocks and an assortment of heads and intakes, unfortunately no P90's.

Ebay Emboldens Some Sellers
Such negativity.........The car may not be interesting to you, but it probably is to someone. I'm sure the owner put as much love into it as the rest of you do into your own cars. Moving on.

Thanks Guys!
I just wanted to send out a BIG THANK YOU to everyone who contributes to this site as well as those who keep it running. Thanks to all of you and the info you so willingly share with the rest of us Z-newbies , I was able to learn enough to find a great Z to start with and begin my quest to build the Z of my dreams. I have just completed the first of many planned projects(280ZX dizzy swap) and started on the second(suspension refresh). So far I have removed the front and rear suspension components and begun the process of taking everything down to bare metal to prep for patinting. I am curently the proud owner of a 1973 Datsun 240Z hovercraft. As a part of the refresh I will be replacing what are supposedly Mulholland struts(probably fine) and sagging stock springs with Tokico HP struts and mathcing springs, Energy Suspension bushings all around, and new ball joints. Next on the list is a carb refresh using the Z-Therapy SU Tune-up Kit, cosmetic engine refresh(yank, strip paint), and building of a custom headlight loom. Not much else to do after that but drive it a bit, although I'm sure I'll figure something out. Unfortunately it will all have to wait for a week while I head out to Hawaii for a week of rest and relaxa......wait, I mean work. See you soon. Thanks again to all for the great hospitality and the great info! Adam

MSD 6A Installation with 280zx distributor and 240Z tach
Oh yeah, thanks for the drawing Birkl. This will come on handy. I plan on adding the MSD6AL to my 73' down the road a bit. I just finished up with the 280ZX dizzy swap and had no problems with my tach so the first step is complete. Started on the first crank.

MSD 6A Installation with 280zx distributor and 240Z tach
This is a reference to the Ignition Modules attached to 79-83 280ZX electronic distributors. The most desired is the E-12-80 found on 79-81's. The modules have the letters B and C on the front as a reminder where to connect the wires. B=batt(+), C=coil(-).

Cowl area Drain Tubes
Roger that. I figured there was another meaning in there somewhere. You say you store your Z in the hanger? Would that be your hanger or one at work? If so what do you fly?

do you know of any zcars in a simular color?
Link not worky. I get the following when trying to view it: "You do not have permission to view the images in this category."

Needed - 79-81 Dizzy Fixing Plate
Nevermind. I'm all set. I spent the whole day scouring junk yards and after locating a dozen or so L2X motors, I finally found one with the pieces I needed. Yeah!! 280ZX dizzy is on and wiring is almost complete. I hope to finish it up tomorrow and see how it runs. Wish me luck.

1973 Pricing?
The price depends largely on where you live, what the demand is, and of course what condition it's in. Here in Cali, you can get a solid, mostly rust free , 1-2 owner 73' for between 5,000 and 7,000. Maybe a little more back East. Mine was listed on eBay with an unknown reserve. I was the high bidder at 5,800 but didn't meet the reserve so I called the owner to make him another offer. I ended up getting it for less than my bid on eBay because he wanted it out of his garage. It's a one owner, 78,000mi, rust free(for real), mostly stock 73' with round tops, 5-speed conversion, air dam, performance anti-sway bars, and old-school aluminum wheels. Now it's mine. Check out the pics via the link in my signature.
