Beginner tune up help
Hey I just bought a timing light and engine "analyzer" at Sears, and will hopefully begin to use this stuff soon to tweek my 71 and 79 Z's, as well as my 82 dodge van. In looking through the manuals for these items. I noted extra instructions for the "advance timing light" which I did not buy. I just got the inductive light. Should I have bought the advance model? What benefits would this one give me? Since it is Sears I could probably take the other one back. Also, what timing setting are most folks using for their 240's? The 71 service manual has dramatically different settings for emission controlled and non emmission vehicles. My air pump and galley have been removed, but I'm wondering if that will make any difference.

HELP seems to be sputtering BADLY
Its pretty common on F.I. cars to run bad if the throttle postion sensor gets wet, I would check that first thing...pop the cover off and blow some hot air on it.

Nissan Z Video
Sahunt, Is your video the A and e vid or a PBS production? I know PBS did have a series about cars a few years back. I have the A and E vid and I know it does not feature the 350Z, and i kind of doubt they would actually update the production. Let us know which one it is and where you got it!

Tailight issues
Ok, I need a bit more advise on the actual testing with a meter. Enrique, when you refer to those wires are you saying to test the connections to the fuse box? Sorry if I am slow on the uptake. I am not real familar with a test meter. I had an old beater one I used to test resistance on speakers, butknow very little about other circuit testing. BTW, the horn is still working.

Tailight issues
I suddenly lost my tail and running lights, and dash lights in my 71. I still have headlights. Brake lights and turn signals still work as well. Fuses appear OK,and I guess its a ground or wiring issue. Where should i start to check? Can someone give me a real basic over view of using a test meter to check wiring? Also, I notice my headlight switch feels different as well. Used to take a bit more force to turn lights on, now it seems real eassy. i wonder if its a sign the switch itself is bad?

Are '79 5 Spds any good?
Hey Marty! I have a 79 ZX. As I understand it, the 79 ZX tranny is the same as 77 and 78. I think it's called the "A" series tranny compared to the later "B" series. I know the fifth gear ratio is lower , like .86, compared to the "B" series where it is something like .74 But I beleive the other four gear ratios are about the same in both series.

Idler pulley noise
Thanks guys, I am leanign toward the belt itself now. I checked the tension , it seemed ok, but i tried both tightening and loosening it, and I still get intermitent squeak. The pulleys do not seem out of alignment with each other. I know because when I chaged out the old pulley it was slightly out of alignment. The belt is somehwat worse for wear on the ends, probably because of the earlier misalignment. I will put a new belt on and see what happens!

Idler pulley noise
I had a squeak in my idler pulley on my 280. It got progressivley worse, and I purchased another pulley from Z barn. The fellow there said he was familiar with the problem and sold me a puley that he had instaled new bearings in. I put the pulley on a couple weeks back, much quieter. Now that pulley is starting to squeak as well! But it is intermittent. I thought it might be related to temperature, but it seems to just be loud some days and not so loud on others. Any ideas?

260z 2+2 urgent info
Hey Guys, if you remember Z car magazine (from the 90's) I am absoulutely certain they had a photo in the readers rides section once of a 78 260 2+2 with the "rare fuel injection option". I remember the car had been sold originally in Bahrain or maybe Saudi Arabia, and the present day owner had taken it to England for restoration. The injection setup was particularly clean without EGR or some of the other auxilary stuff on the intake manifold.

Honor Roll
A Reuters analysis of Defense Department statistics shows that the Vietnam War, which the Army says officially began on Dec. 11, 1961, produced a combined 392 fatal casualties from 1962 through 1964. 58,226 American soldiers died in the war when our truce was signed in Jan of 1973. We have now lost 1000 soldiers in Iraq. Will we be there 5 years from now? How may will have died by then?

Honor Roll
The US casualies in terms of deaths are low. I believe the number of allied (read US) wounded is now around nine thousand. Thats not low. Also, as of last wednesday the number of Iraquis killed since we invaded is estimated at 100 THOUSAND. That report, aired on national TV ,said the vast majority were civilian casualities. Also if you look at the number of US servicemen killed in the early years of american involvement in Vietnam, it was less than a thousand per year. Think about that before you say the causalties are low.

Of all the damn bad luck....damaged already
that is definitely frightening regarding the tires. I wonder if anyone here knows some obvious signs to look for as far as tires go. You say the looked ok, but i wonder if there are some things the average joe can check? I know I often hit the backroads at speed and it would be nice to have an inkling there was a problem.

schematic for hoses on stock air box?
Hi I finally put the box on yesterday, I didnt really have time for a full test drive to see if I could detect any difference but a quick drive was in order. i couldnt really tell much of a change, but the box does look kind of cool. I also happened to drive down a street where I had seen a few 510's parked at a house before. The owner was outside and then I noticed he also had a 72 Z. Turns out he had owned it since 73, and seemed to know quite a bit about Datsuns. He concurred that the stock air horns would give me more torque, less hi end HP. I directed him to the website, hopefully he'll show up here someday. He said he owned about five 510's, many were out of site in the backyard.

schematic for hoses on stock air box?
Alright guys, youve convinced me to see if i can feel any seat of the pants dyno improvments with the stock air box and air horns, since my Z had aftermarket air filters when I bought it. One more thing, what about the hose that connects the PCV from the balance tube to whatever the hell it is connecting it to down below, does that hose just run UNDERNEATH the airbox??

schematic for hoses on stock air box?
Hey thanks to all for the advice. I am still wondering about two issues. First, Are the "air Horns" incroporated into the stock air filter a good thing? Is it better to use the stock box (with air horns)than any of the aftermarket setups, like the Ramflo filters, without air horns?? And secondly what does anyone know about the little "breather" filter I have on my valve cover? Its a K and N that relaces the hose that goes to the nornal airbox to recirculate engine blow by gases.

Series 1 Tool Box Hinges
I thought that motorsport intended to do repros of the boxes, have you looked on their website or called them?

schematic for hoses on stock air box?
alright, thanks for the info on the stock airbox hookup. Does anyone know if the little K and N breather filter I have on my valve cover is actually a bad thing? I thought I heard it could cause bad odors in the cabin, and I have noticed that especially on deceleration. Also whats everybody's thoughts on after market air filters? I have a couple vintage pairs Ive used off and on but thought id try the orignal box for awhile...

schematic for hoses on stock air box?
Thanks guys, I am still a bit confused about the third small nipple toward the bottom of the airbox. Where does it go? I also now longer have an airpump, doesnt the other large nipple on the bottom of the box supposed to go to the input on the airpump?

schematic for hoses on stock air box?
I was wondering about that warm air arrangment, I have a header and cant tell where that actually hooks up.

schematic for hoses on stock air box?
Can anyone describe the attachments to the stock air box, or send to a site with a diagram? I have an early 71 Z, and I just bought an airbox off ebay. I'm not 100 percent sure which hoses hook up where. My car came with a couple pair of aftermarket filters, but Ive heard the aftermarkets may not be that great without air horns?? Anyway, I think i'd like to hook up the old box to see if there is any noticable difference in looks and feel. ( I did note it weighs alot more than aftermarket!) Also, I have that little Kand N breather filter hooked up to my valve cover, Ive heard that might actually not be a good idea, whats the story on that?

what are symptoms of bad diff?
I am hearing a whirring noise that seems to be coming from the rear I noticed it last night, and think the symptoms are more noticeable now that the weather is turning cooler and I have to keep the windows rolled up. It really makes the noise when I'm in first gear, or coasting in neutral., but not as noticeable in other gears. If it is the diff, do you think it's better to just get one from a junkyard or for sale on the net, or have a rebuild done at a tranny shop?

There's lots of room here
This summer my wife and I took our big Dodge camper van out on a vacation camp some 100 miles from home. One morning at 4am we were awakened by sounds from the engine compartment. Two nights of battles with a large grey sqirrel ensued. It stymied all efforts of eviction from under the van. Even the family dog could not scare it away, ir stop it's labors to build a nest on the intake manifold. We left camping for home, imagining the critter must have bailed out of the van when we took to the road. At the time, I noticed that this was a grey squirrel, not native to the woods in which we camped, but definitely the type we see back in the city. A week later I had some brake work done on my 79 ZX. When I went to pick up the car, my mechanic asked if I had squirrels in the neighborhood. Sure enough, there was a nest made of dog fur and steel wool, adorned with a dozen apples piled up in the cavity behind the left headlight! I'm pretty sure our camping companion moved from the van to the ZX. Now I'm wondering if he'll make another little house inside the 71 Z in the garage. I'm still not sure how to deal with the critter, I wonder if he's prone to chewing on wiring or some such habit?
