Why is it that the inline fuel injected 6 cyl engine in Z cars needs a min of 91 octane fuel when 8 cyl as well as 4 cyls will run well on 87 octane. My Z owners manual says use a min of 91 octane, but our sons Mits Eclipse runs great on 87 , our Caddy runs great on 87 and has an 8 cyl engine..but the Z is supposed to have 91... This is not about the cost of fuel , its a question about why the Z has to have the higher octane 77 Z

Oops... you are correct..its not restoration if a modification is being planned or is going on...hmm didnt think of it that way..so I guess what I am doing is modifying my Z to the way that I want it to look like as there are a number of things that I am upgrading as well as updating...poor choice of terminology on my part...either that or I need to go to Hybird Z and post these ideas or questions there.... 77 Z

Steve.. so how do you do it ..briefly...as I do not want to damage the clear covers in front of the speedo and tach...the ones that are for fuel etc are easy to access considering I have the console , radio etc out at this time.. Thanks 77 Z

Like I said , I sprayed mine, worked great and also has given me the ability to see what I think of an all black interior. I too am thinking of going with some other form of seat, i.e racing or a newer version more like capt chairs with the multiple arm rest , which would entail removing the arm rest from the door panel and covering the screw holes...who knows , thats what makes restoration so much fun, the different ideas you as well as others come up with from time to time.. 77 Z

That is something I am looking at now..having a CD player installed where the original radio was...also looking at Sat radio as well...hate commercial interruptions of music... What I am wondering is if a DVD player will fit in the glove box area, using the glove box lid to cover it but gutting the glove box area... 77 Z

Mine had a half cap put on by the original owner..half cap half assed...pardon the expression, but, why he did not put on a full cover prior to the ones that are now out I have no idea..the half caps have a tendency to not fit well on the bottom edge. Im taking it off and thinking of going with the one that is shown here that appears to be a full dash...its a cover but it has to fit better than what is in the car now..on the other hand I am also looking at a paint job that is going to run right at 3500.00 so now what ...possibly an entire new dash...look at it this way ..by the time I am finished my estimated expenses are going to be slightly over 10,000.00 ...so why scrimp with the dash , which is why im thinking of just having a new one intsalled. I also want to change the background on the guages which may require taking the dash out..so why not go on and change to a new one.. 77 Z

Sprayed mine as well . Went over a light tan with black. Just take your time and do not try to give it a finish look on the first go around. Spray the tough areas first then go to the flat surfaces like the back side of the seatback. So far, and this is after 9 months, no flaking , fading or anything. They look as great as the day that I first sprayed them and the door panels. If you dont like the finished work..then get them redone by a trim shop in the fashion you want. This will at least let you know what the color will look like as far as the interior and how it goes with the exterior.. 77 Z

I would just like to know what I might be looking at dollar wise to replace the compressor as well as the receiver dryer and possibly the condenser ...the condenser may be ok..the system had a leak in it when I bought the car and like a dummy I did not have it checked or fixed at that time..we added freon ..well out of nowhere the compressor locked up..so does anyone know if another system will fit in a Z or will only a Z compressor work or whats the story as well as possible financial damage... Thanks for the imput 77 Z

Thank you Vicky..very true about the legendary look of the dash...but I have to do something considering all the money that is going into everything else along the way..so far I have compiled a list excluding the refinishing that totals to nearly 6,000 dollars..some of this is suspension changes as well as a few minor engine mods, such as adding a header and new exhaust system...not that there is anything currently wrong with the exhaust system on the car..but I just want a header on it...dont ask me ...just do.. Im not for "ricing " any Z for sure...I want as much of the orig look as possible in some areas but in others I want some of the hybird look...I know this site is predominately for "stock" Z car owners but no harm in asking.. Will ck the periodical you mentioned and again thanks for the help.. 77 Z

Everything works but the preverbial clock..those things were just not built to last but clocks are a problem with most older cars regardless of the make or model... Ok ...does anyone know of guages (non standard Datsun ones) that will fit into the area of the original Datsun ones, for fuel, oil pressure , temp , charging etc. ..as well as a clock that can be used to replace the original one or where I can locate the original clocks. Next...lighting of the speedometer and tach area...any suggestions on how to improve this.... L E D's or will those be just to bright. Lastly ...just how tough is it to replace an entire dash. Mine has a half cap on it and as has been posted before its fair at best for the look I eventually want the car to have..actually poor...but what about the full caps or has anyone done anything with fiberglass..I know alot of the kids that trick up rides today use fiberglass to change the shape or the appearance of the dash..anyone done anything like that.. There is a new or what I know to be new Clear Coat that is avalible , that is referred to as EUROPEAN CLEAR COAT...apparently from what I have learned it is a clear that is being used by Mercedes, BMW, Ferrari and the like. It is supposed to be much better (arnt all things from Europe) than the ones that have been used here in the states for many years..I heard about it at a local body shop that I was interviewing regarding painting my 77 280 77 Z

Wonder what an entire new system would cost...compressor , receiver drier etc...all but the condenser...anyone have an idea... I definitely need a new compressor...and there is a leak somewhere in the system which is why I now need a compressor..but Im wondering what it would cost to just redo the system minus the condenser .... 77 Z

Unfortunately in my state you can only have 7 letters..and I keep coming up with really good ones that are 8 letters long..unless I drop back to 3-5 letters...you guys that are in the 8 letter states can really come up with some good ones. 77 Z

I have owned two Hyundai Elantras..the current one a 2001 Elantra is a much improved vehicle over the first one which was a 1996..both purchased new from the dealer. The 2001 is a much improved version of the 96 ...does nicely on trips around 33 mph and 27-28 in town...my wife really likes it as well..easy car to see out of and very easy to drive.. 77 Z

I am considering a pearl white that is actually called something like Dover Pearl or something like that ...anyway it is on the 2004 Mits Eclipse's..almost a metalic pearl...does not have the pinkish tint or tan tint that pearl generally has ...with a black interior and smoked windows it would make quite a contrast..but on the other hand LeMans blue looks good, Red or Yellow or champaign are also in the running..I cant make up my mind..I had it down pretty much to the Blue until I saw the Mitsubishi color the other day...back to the drawing board we go... 77 Z

Correct I ment Mississippi not Michigan...and as far as Texas is concerned...hell its a country not a state..Our daughter was born in Houston has not lived in Texas for 17 years she is 19 ..ask her where she is form..and while she has lived in SC for the last 17 years...her answer..TEXAS...in particular Houston...and damned proud of it as well...to there would be all the regions and then Texas alone...:classic: :classic: 77 Z

True ..but to totally eleminate or overlook the Southern region all together is what the beef is. The country is divided into regions, North or North East, South or South East, Midwest and the West, so the point that was being made was that the southern states are not in the North East nor the Midwest..but are in the South. SC NC VA KY ARK MI LA TX GA AL are regionally in the south and maybe add WV to the list as well, obvioulsly these states are south of the Mason Dixon line and geographically would be Southern ..not in a region with Ohio Indiana New York or Maine..that was the point... Not trying to make a mtn out of a mole hill but if we are going to have regions then at least have the correct states in the correct region... 77 Z

To me you dont do or own a Z any differntly than any other restoration or ownership...who really cares ..you put into it what you want and what makes you happy ..thats worth more than the money you would obtain from selling a Z ..I sold my first one after owning it from Dec 77 until June of 93...went into mourning for about three years, then took four more years to find the 77 that I now own...so its all in how you look at it and what you want...me ..I want this Z the way I want it which means in the end I may have way too much money in the car...but Im not selling this one... 77 Z

Stock with the exception of a header with a turbo exhaust system, larger throttle body as well as cold air intake , outside of that its stock, with all new hoses as well as seals. 77 Z
