Dip
You're going to laugh but for 20 years I have been sealing up my cars using an undercoat gun from HF and a good grade of asphalt driveway sealer. Smells like hell for a month but it never comes off. Now I don't think I will do it to my Z but it isn't going to see the use my trucks do. Anyway I just stick on a 6' length of 1/2" hose on the end of the gun (really both ends as I just siphon from the 5 gallon bucket) and shove the hose back into areas I can't otherwise get to, pull the trigger and slowly pull the hose out, with the cost of the sealer you just pump it in till your happy

What brand of tools do you use?
I'm mostly Craftsman, though I agree that the new stuff isn't like the old stuff. Snap on and Mac are mixed in there too. One thing I consider a best buy are the impact sockets at Harbor Freight, I've got one set that is going on 20+ years and lost most of them before any of them broke, so for impacts HF is the way to go, when they are on sale of course

States droping tax on gas !!
Transmitting the data would be a nightmare in it's self, the airwaves are packed already, cellphone bandwidth is packed so the check it when you get gas makes the most sence. But here's the biggy, let's say Ca starts this, and you fill up and take off for Reno, spend a week there traveling around and get home on an empty tank and 800 miles later, should you have to pay for 800 miles of CA road tax?? Unfair taxation, sounds like tea party time to me... So you would need a computer to keep track of inbounds and out of bounds locations for CA tax or Arizona, New Mexico, whoever.. And what if I drove out to CA from IN and we just pay by the gallon, how do I pay in CA?? How about I own my car in say LA and drive around there, then trailer the car upstate somewhere and drive around and stop for gas, since my last position and my current position is 300 miles I should pay tax on that??? So you can see that yes it is possible to do, is being done on a small scale, but needs to have a lot of thinking done before it becomes a possible reality in such a large scale. I'm sure that there are those in Govt that want that control over us, to be able to "watch" over us to keep us "safe", or just because they have no control in their life they have to try and control ours that they will push hard to make this come about. I think that we should fight such controls but even if we loose it isn't going to become a working reality overnight. Just my $.02..

What do I do with my car? Do I need a new body?
If the roof dents are back from the hard line of the windshield they can be pounded out using a dolly and filled. Not the best and it's a tough job being that the roof line is an easy to see place on a Z.... You could reskin it, tough job too... If you have little $ in this one and want a A++++++++ looking car it may be best to move on to another before you invest more in this one... Roofs are the worst place to have to repair IMO, the fix always shows...

States droping tax on gas !!
Alfadog, We're looking at a tracking and recording system, it has to keep track of where you have been and how far you have gone, how quickly you got there would be just an extra perk for those that cared So you need some kind of recording device, in this case a computer would be best as it could be programed to combine the data into a useful output for the "recorder"(read government).

What do I do with my car? Do I need a new body?
I don't think so I believe he is stating his position on knowlage on body repair, and why he posted the question in the first place, in other words he's starting out where we all did, a dumass....

What do I do with my car? Do I need a new body?
Looking at the angle of that rear wheel I think you may have more than body problems... If the dents in the roof don't extend into the windshield seal line they can be taken out, the one fender shot looks like an old repair so worse could be hidden...

States droping tax on gas !!
Looking at this from the technical end it is interesting as I really wonder if the technology is here to do something like that today or even in the next few years. Yes I know that it is in use or something like it but we are talking millions of cars not thousands. And if you think about it there are so many ways around it, really, what if you want to get some gas for your mower, wouldn't it be great not to pay road tax on that gas!! In the course of a year I probably buy several hundred gallons of gas that is burned off road, that would be great considering how much road tax is per gallon. Gas in a 5 gallon can is gas, fits in my tank just fine. But anyway, if anything this would only apply to new cars, how would they "make" you install a GPS in your old Z??? I think it would have a hard time passing if you had to buy something so they could tax you, for sure it would get a bunch of redneck boys I know in a huff... Anyway from the technical standpoint the car that had this would have to have a computer in it, tied to the GPS, speedometer, and all the other goodies. No computer, well it isn't going to work. For those of you that live in the cities with the big buildings GPS isn't going to work very well and if it isn't tied to your odometer it isn't going to know how far you’ve gone, if I block the GPS signal it's not going to know where I've been... and it doesn’t take much to block the GPS signal if you have access to the antenna. Sounds great for a new car install, really tough for an old car upgrade. And before you yell what do you know about it, I’m a EE and work for a very large defense contractor designing military radios with embedded GPS, along with Have Quick, and Saturn waveforms so I’ve beaten my head against the wall trying to solve “simple†GPS problems and I wouldn’t want to even think about tackling one like this that tax revenue is going to be coming from.

Leave it to a Blue state to come up with something like that Just kidding GPS would be easy enough to block, cover the antenna...

What do you do about the tranny?
I must be an abusive car owner, I would never think or care if the transmission case was dirty on a DD, I would expect it to be dirty, as a matter of fact the new 5 speed I stuck in had a dirty case, oh the shame !!!

What do you do about the tranny?
mung? is that a Florida thing??

shock/strut installation
I used a compressor on the fronts, won't ever use them again as they seem to be a hazard in themselfs and since after I was done I find out that neighbors have a comercial wall mounted unit.... Did the rears as mentioned above except I used the cars weight to compress the springs putting it back together, real PIA to get all back together by yourself, a second person would have defentitly made the job easier and faster. All in all it is a fairly easy job, just that you have to remember that the springs under compression are extreamly dangerous and must be handled with caution.

My #6 plug has burnt liquid of some sort around the entry....
Loose plug or perhaps a bad gasket on the plug, or was loose??

fiberglass alternative?
You bring up an interesting point, so since mine is off the car and I have a scale I figure I'd weigh it. This is a 240Z fiberglass hood w/o vents, with stock hinges and hood latch still attached, 29 pounds 4 oz. So if anyone can weigh a stock hood we will at least have some ball park figures as to which if either is lighter!

fiberglass alternative?
I've a glass hood, think it is heavier than original too. You won't notice any difference with the parts mixed or matched, typically though the fiberglass parts are harder to make straight if you are looking for a good paint job so I would recommend going with steel, fenders are still available from Nissan.

JDM grill on EBay no reserve
George, Thanks for the measurements, I'm thinking of ordering the metal as the home places don't have what it would take. I'm pretty sure I can just about match what your pic shows. Close will be good enough, something that looks nice and does the job! thanks again,

JDM grill on EBay no reserve
ZIII, Thanks, your first photo is the one I hadn't looked at! figures, Expanded metal is sold by the length of the diamond I believe, what is that measurement? and I couldn't really tell by the photo but is the metal raised (untouched after being expanded) or flat (think of it expanded then smashed flat on a single plain so it becomes just a sheet)? Thanks for your time!

Help On Taking Off Head
Yea, welding on a nut is the easy way to go if you have bolt above the block. The heat generated by the welding breaks loose the rust bond and usually they come right out making you wonder why they broke in the first place!

New convertible
I'm thinking the TR-6 top can be made to fit. Watch e-bay there is a group selling the conversion, check their web site they have info on the top though they do not supply one. I think this is the same conversion that was done in the 70's.

JDM grill on EBay no reserve
Looking at the pictures it appears that this grill is made of expanded metal, is that right? What are the dimentions of the diamond openings in the grill, and is the metal raised or flattened? I am curious as I need to make a grill to fit my larger opening (no bumper) and like this look. A 2' X 4' sheet of either 1/2" or 3/4" diamond raised expanded metal is only around $30 making this a real option for me. You guys that have one, can you get me a clear close photo of the mesh?

What brake hoses do I need?
I did the same front conversion that you are looking at and I used 82 zx rear calipers, used 82 zx lines all around, with the standard factory type replacements as I'm just driving on the street, SS braided would be nice but not worth the extra $ to me. On the front I did not use the 240Z hard line from caliper to hose but went directly from frame hardline to caliper.
