Chg and brake light
So, with the key on and the engine off, the charge light is not lit? It's not common but the lights do burn out. The charge light should light when you turn the key On then go off when the engine starts. Not sure how that relates to brake light staying on, the original problem. It's hard to dig in to electrical when it's not in front of you. And it's not yours. Sounds like you are operational though. Maybe someone else will take a crack at the puzzle. The wring diagram shows two circuits connecting to the L wire. So, maybe you lost one circuit through a short or a fuse, but still have one to keep your alternator charging.

Chg and brake light
There are several ways around this. Do you have a meter? You can start the car and see if the alternator is charging. Measure voltage before starting the engine and after starting it. You can disconnect the T plug and see if you have continuity to ground on the L terminal of the alternator. More clues.

Chg and brake light
Here is a more simple way to check the relay. Plug it back in, turn the key on and see if the Charge light on your voltmeter comes on. It should. If it does not then the ground circuit through the relay and the alternator is bad. That would explain two problems. Could be just a bad connection at the T plug on the alt, or a bad alternator or a bad relay. I think. If I understand the circuits correctly.

Snarky comments to people not wearing masks - wrong?
I have lost the urge to do it anymore anyway. There's just too many people and you can see that they know better. Now we also are probably about 50/50 where I am. So, the people that don't wear a mask just don't care. Not much you can do about those people. One of the big disappointments for me though is that I see a lot of people that would have been interesting before. But now that you can see more of what's inside them, they're not the same. I told a cashier at the grocery store that women with the masks were actually more attractive than the ones without. She was wearing a mask, I wasn't being snarky, I was paying a compliment, Although it would be a pretty good snarky comment...

There are a bunch of more modern sensors out there. Can't find the old ZX model. As I understand them the frequency that they measure is important. I wonder what kind of "signal" they put out. https://www.courtesyparts.com/?p=catalog&mode=search&search_in=all&search_str=22060

Snarky comments to people not wearing masks - wrong?
The way I do it is aggressive aggressiveness. The first goal is to see if they really are ignorant of what's going on. Who knows, maybe they are. The guy I talked to in the store might not have seen the recent CDC guidance. My comment hopefully caused him to go home and get up to date. For his sake and for his eight year old son's sake. The second goal is to let them know that the people around them know that they are being socially irresponsible. Pretending to be ignorant isn't working, I see you. It's called being involved in your community. Certainly, if you're afraid of getting punched in the face you should avoid doing it. But, if you want to take the risk, for your fellow citizens, I encourage it. I don't think that anyone should get a free pass because they know that people will be afraid to make a scene. We're not talking about loud music or obnoxious clothes. We're talking about spreading a deadly disease.

It was for the turbo engines. Not sure it worked well. I had pondered some copper heating oil line, a flattened end, a bolt to the engine block, and a funnel in the cabin for my car. In the early days of my worrying about detonation. Here's the ZX sensor. There's ideas out there - https://www.nicoclub.com/archives/diy-knock-detection.html

It's shown in the diagram. There are three possible paths to ground the light circuit so the light comes on. What you did suggests that the relay is stuck or the alternator "L" circuit is messed up, like gwri8 suggested. Check the solenoid's circuit to ground on the relay and see if it's stuck. It should be open circuit when it's unplugged. If the relay is right then your alternator might be messed up. CO just replied but I'm going to hit Submit Reply anyway...

Snarky comments to people not wearing masks - wrong?
This whole thing would be so much better if the only people who got the disease were responsible, themselves, for getting it. Like tobacco and cancer. Tough luck! Or if we could track down the people who spread the actual germs that infected somebody you care about. Death penalty, please... That's the big dilemma. Many people are willing to gamble with other people's lives. That's the core of the argument.

I concede. There is no definitive paper that measures the effectiveness of face covering. Quite a bit about N95 masks, but the studies are mostly about protecting health care workers. Not stopping the spread. A person just has to use logic to get there. Maybe the CDC is conning people, just to look like they're doing something. Who knows. The whole thing really is a hoax, and we're all suckers. Here's a good paper that covers much of the discussion points though. Knowledge of distributions, how filter media works, stuff like that. With the internet though, of course, you can find support for whatever makes you feel right. So, maybe start a new thread titled "Replies to Snarky Comments". "Your grandma's a burden on the healthcare system anyway!" "More for me!" "No more slow drivers! Yay" https://arstechnica.com/science/2020/04/should-you-wear-a-face-mask-heres-all-the-data-we-have/ https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/prevent-getting-sick/diy-cloth-face-coverings.html

Rand Paul has already had the virus. So, maybe, no worries for him. Paul calls for reopening the economy, opposes relief bill Republican senator Rand Paul has taken the Senate floor to argue that “no amount of money” can save the country from the coronavirus crisis. “Our only hope of rescuing this country is re-opening the economy,” Paul said. The Kentucky Republican acknowledged the virus still poses many risks, but he said lawmakers needed to “put those risks in perspective” when it came to considering whether to reopen the economy. “Today I rise in opposition to spending $500 billion more,” Paul said.

You seem to be just pulling "facts" from the internet to try to support a point. Like the guy in the supermarket with no face covering, walking with his eight year old son, but wearing gloves. He claimed ignorance of the CDC guidance, but tried to use the fact that he had gloves and I didn't to gain the high ground. Not only was he careless of society's concerns, but he was setting a bad example for his son. No offense, pseudo arguments are good mental exercise, I get it. It's a free society. You don't have to wear a face covering but the scientific evidence supports the effectiveness of doing it as slowing transmission. The evidence from the trained professionals, not the thought experiments from the internet. It's a matter of degree. Sorry, but I can't just ignore the science. Most of the good things in the world come from its proper application. Here's some pseudo-science for anyone who wants to go that route. It's been commercialized. https://arstechnica.com/tech-policy/2020/04/church-of-bleach-ordered-to-stop-selling-bleach-as-covid-19-cure/

Barr: Justice department may join lawsuits against lockdowns Attorney general William Barr raised the possibility that the justice department may eventually join lawsuits against stay-at-home orders if states repeatedly extend them. “We have to give businesses more freedom to operate in a way that’s reasonably safe,” Barr said on The Hugh Hewitt Show today. “To the extent that governors don’t and impinge on either civil rights or on the national commerce – our common market that we have here – then we’ll have to address that.” Barr went on to add, “We’re looking carefully at a number of these rules that are being put into place ... And if we think one goes too far, we initially try to jawbone the governors into rolling them back or adjusting them. And if they’re not and people bring lawsuits, we file statement of interest and side with the plaintiffs.” Barr’s comments come days after Trump called on states under stay-at home orders – specifically Michigan, Minnesota and Virginia – to be liberated, echoing messaging from right-wing protesters.

That's another failing of the message from the authorities. Confusing masks and face coverings. I think that the reason for a face covering at the supermarket is mostly because we all touch many things that we don't buy and we're in close quarters to the items. Think about how many steaks or packages of chicken that you've picked up and put back on the shelf, or containers of milk, or bags of chips. The handles on the carts or baskets. The credit card machine, the conveyor belt. All pretty close to your face and the droplets will just sit there for the next person to come along. Another thing that people tend to do is the "all or nothing" approach. If the face covering doesn't stop all of the virus carrying droplets then it's a waste of time. The reality though is that the effort is about minimizing the spread. Cuomo points out every day that New York has an R value, or spread value, of 0.9. All it takes is a small percentage of the population to start infecting more than one person each, and the whole thing starts again. Here's a good story to read or pass along to people who think that the virus can't spread by breath alone. They knew and they took precautions. But no face coverings or masks. https://www.latimes.com/world-nation/story/2020-03-29/coronavirus-choir-outbreak

It's a mulitlayer moral dilemma isn't it? Do you sacrifice people to save people who are too weak to handle the change in their lifestyle? How do you determine value? (Edit - sorry motorman, I didn't mean to imply that your friends were weak. The reasons for suicide are complex.) These discussions are similar to the environmental discussions, just more extreme. Loggers who "need" trees to cut down, and will cut down everything they can find. Fishermen who need to fish until all of the fish are gone. People need to drive their cars or fly to the global warming conferences. Human beings supposedly are "superior" to other animals because we are adaptable. We change as conditions change and control our environment. That's why we are spread around the world. If you dig down in to the rationale of the cure being worse than the disease, it mostly comes down to comfort. People miss their routine and society is designed to reward only people who do "work". The methods and means exist to learn to live with the virus. But, ironically, many people don't want to put in the real "work" to do it. We're almost back to the "death panels" from early Affordable Care Act discussions. Might as well check the wire ends to be sure something didn't short. Not connected doesn't necessarily mean not powered. Here's some FSM stuff. They show the relay locations in there also.

@Captain Obvious knows the 78's well. I remember something different about how the brake warning light works on the 78's because they have the internally regulated alternator. Not sure. It's after midnight east coast. You might explore the wiring diagram in the Engine Electrical chapter.

I have an account on that other site. I could send him a message for you. Send me a message via the messaging thing on this site if you want me to pass on a phone number and you want to keep it private. You can hold your cursor over my screen symbol, the two stud remnants and "Message' will pop up. Or I can send you a message and you can reply. 240260280 has, or had, an account over there also. He could do the same. I'm not sure he was on good terms with some of the guys there though, for some reason. @240260280 I was on the site today and saw that BRAAP had been on it in January. So he's out there somewhere.

Better than the close ratio that you had in there. Close is 3.062 first, wide is 3.321. So it should be easier on the clutch when taking off in first gear. There are people out there looking for the 3.36. So if you swap it out don't toss that 3.36 diff.

Considering a 1980zx
Don't forget that these old cars had terrible passenger protection, for crashes. Even the ZX's. No airbags, no crumple areas. Poor steering in an old car at 130 mph with half the people around you on a cellphone...not good.
