My 1970 240Z!
Yes, congrats as well! It doesnt look too bad all in all, were you able to get for the less than the $1500 he originally wanted? Looks like alot of work ahead, probably not much more than I plan on doing to mine (my body looks alot better) but I spent alot more and it isnt a lower vin '70 either. Unlike some others in your previous post, I did not think that $1500 was all that bad. If you are able to do all/most of the work yourself and you are a smart shopper, you can save alot. If your plans are for a decent driver vs. a show car, it will still cost alot but not the $15K stated in the previous post. Personally, I would cringe spending $7500 on paint, I'd never want to take it out of the garage. Keep us posted on the restore.

what am i missing? please help
You guys are the experts He did say that his fuel pressure gauge past the fuel filter is running at 36psi and he monitors it constantly. Would his pressure still be at 36 if he has junk clogging it up? I checked mine and it is an even 36 constant past the filter, I was relieved that I didnt have to drop the tank, now maybe Im not so sure.

what am i missing? please help
In my very limited knowledge, it might be the water temperature sensor. It actually richens the mixture of air/fuel until the engine arrives at normal operating temp, gradually allowing for a leaner mixture while the engine warms up. Do you have a copy of the Factory Service manual or the Fuel Injection Book? If not, do a search on here for links to download them and read up. There are diagnostic tests you can find in both manuals that might help you pinpoint the problem.

Smog experts!!!
I am not very well versed on this but know some basics, Sblake01 can chime in on this when he sees it. I beleive the problem lies in the air regulator adjustment screw inside the A.F.M. If you are on the drivers side looking at the afm, there should be a little rubber plug covering the screw, towards the bottom rear of the unit. You really need do measure the CO reading with an instrument. There is no "proper setting" for the screw from what I've been told, and playing with it without the proper equipment might do more harm than good.

Z Update
You can download the Service manual at carfiche.com (or another site, Stephen, cant remember the link you posted a little while back). You can also download what is referred to as the Fuel Injection Bible(do a search on here for the link). It is written for the '75 model year and is very well written and fairly easy to understand. It has all the tests layed out to troubleshoot and refers back the the factory service manual as well. Between those 2 books and Stephens advice on here, I was able to do alot to my car and didnt know the 1st thing about F.I.

Paint stripping question
I agree. I painted my Harley a few years back with rattle cans. I had absolutely no experience besides painting interior walls. I researched a bit, took the old paint off down to the metal, prepped, primed, sanded, sprayed, cleared, sanded and buffed and it looked awesome. I did a black base with color shifting flames. The color shift was in the clear coat I used. Out of the sun, it looked plain black, in the sun the flames popped. The hardest part of the whole affair was laying out the flames to where they looked like a pro did it, no straight lines, uniform curves, etc. I cussed many times and spent many hours doing it. The result was very worthwhile. I had many, many people ask me where I had my paint done and I always loved their reactions when I told them I did it with rattle cans in my garage, it seriously looked that good. I doubt I would repeat it when it comes time to do my Z but i will strip and paint it myself. I think a decent HVLP gun makes the job ALOT easier. As with the paint by roller method (too much sanding IMO), or a rattle can job or even with a $500 gun, prep and finish is the most important. There are a few different options of applying the paint, knowing which ones work with each other, final color sanding and buffing is the key to a great job.

1975 280Z rough idling
Nice work Stephen. I picked up a set of noid lights at my local Auto Zone, 5-6 lights in the set but they have the one you need for the Bosch setup on our cars. $19.99. There is a guy that sells the one we need on Ebay for around $20 or so. List the ones on ebay that you dont need and who who knows, maybe you can even make a few bucks.

Modernized 240Z?
Still, you have to admit Stephen that it is a nice styling exercise. I personally, like it alot compared to the 350Z. Maybe we should send it over to the good folks at Nissan so they are aware of it. Clean up the front end a bit and keep it void of all the "modern stuff" like GPS, power seats, and assorted other toys. Keep the costs down, put a 3.0 straight 6 in it, maybe traction control, power windows and mirrors and they would have a winner on their hands.

Well, I finally bought 0ne.....
Congrats, 2 years was my estimate as well, and ALOT more $ than I should be spending to be sure...but it will be worth it to have a decent driver. Like you, not many Z's around here, I have seen 3 in the past couple years. (not counting the bargain '74 I looked at a couple weeks ago, $1500, might have considered $150...maybe )

Dashboard cap removal?
The tach is easy. One plug, only plugs in one way, look thru the hole (right side) in the dash and you will see the connector. Plug it in, slide the tach thru the front of the hole, one screw underneath and one screw on the top of the tach housing from the front. Speedo is screwed in the same, also one plug to connect but you also have to deal with the speedo cable and trip reset cable. I found it easiest to plug connector in 1st, then attach the trip cable with the 1 tiny set screw. Then as you start to slide the speedo into the dash, get underneath and line up the speedo cable and turn the bolt by hand until tight. Finish tightening with a wrench, slide it in the rest of the way and secure with screws just like the tach.

Dashboard cap removal?
Damn, that IS messed up! I would still recommend using some type of filler on those cracks...something lile the SEM bumper repair. I thought mine looked bad. The full dash I installed a couple weeks ago looks good but wasnt a perfect fit. I pulled it, pushed it, heated it, etc and still couldnt get it perfect but it looks alot better than the 1/2 cap. My dash was almost gone around the 3 small gauges and it covered the entire mess up rather nicely.

Modern Classics, opinions?
I listed the s2000 in my opening thread. I saw one earlier in the week which really got my mind going about this topic. What started it all was the 1st gen MR2 I saw a couple weeks ago.

Ok, avatar is changed now to a shot I took last year of my "totally rust free 280Z" that I bought on Ebay last year. This is a shot of the hatch the day after I bought it. I guess the P.O. had never opened up the hatch in the time he had owned the car :

, I would like you even MORE than I already do if you looked like Daisey White, Black, Asian etc, I like them all. My little game with my avatar change to my wife of 14 years (today btw) is about over. I have had 8 hits in the past 24 hours to my page, vs 14 total hits in the year I have been on here. This has been a fun little thread but I think its about time to get back to the business of getting my Z on the road.

That is interesting. A very cool car albeit very pricey. Had they come in around 25-30K I think it would have put the Big 3 (although not so big anymore) in more of a crisis mode than they already seem to be in. I understand that it was impossible to make that car for that amount, just look into the Chevy Volt. Long live the Tucker! Now there was a car that made them shake in their collective boots.

I think I might have been one of them myself I have had 3 hits in the past couple hours since changing my Avatar. It just goes to show that men will be men, its a genetic thing.

, now that word is a mouthful. I would probably get a lecture about crossgenderavataring on here from my significant other. Tomorrow is our 14th wedding annivesary, I asked for a new distributor for my Z! I am just going to do it for a couple days, jsut to see how many hits I have to my page, totally unscientific, just having a bit of fun.

I cant beleive I did not mention the NSX, always a favorite of mine, for the reasons you stated. The 2nd gen MR2 is in there, but 3rd gen? If I am not mistaken, isnt that the convertible version? The one that looks sort of insect like? I never saw many on the road, I dont think it was that big of a seller. Speaking of that, the last gen Thunderbird. Huge sales (for that type of car) before it was even introduced and then it died a pretty quick death. Not my type of car but I did admire them.

That is surprising she is always treated with respect. My daughter is on Myspace and its amazing what she has dealt with on there before she went to a private setting. In the interest of science, I have changed my avatar to a photo taken of my lovely wife last winter, just to see how many hits I get to my nickname now
