  1. Owe some updates, so here goes: http://www.asta.bizhosting.com/240z-b4_after1.htm http://www.asta.bizhosting.com/240z-b4_after2.htm http://www.asta.bizhosting.com/240Z-inquiry_form.htm Lots more, but at least wanted to return with some. Thank you for your guidance and help.
  2. Heads turn, smiles evolve, jealousy shows it's green hue, people notice! Could be we're in the Bay Area, could be 'cause I'm beaming with humungous smiles since Hubby chipped off the tar mat and found no rust on our '71 240Z, could be that it just sounds hell-o-good! 'course it could be just because it ROARS when you run her and she can tell it like it i! A Classic Z just can't go unnoticed! It just can't doesn't make sense!
  3. Should have included at least one link, sorry. http://asta.bizhosting.com/november_updates.htm
  4. Looking at one of your pictures, Randy, looks like a twin to ours! But when I saw the rust on the bottom, not so much. We've been the only owner of our '71 240Z, and thought all along what we were seeing on the bottom of our "floorboards", were actually the floorboards, only to learn (thanks to this site), there's something called Tar Mats. . Chipped it away and found things OK. Also had ours up on a lift at the shop to inspect, found topical rust, and not the level of pain you're showing on the thumbnails (thank goodness). Did you scrape around to get it to drop down like that or is it the way it was just on the lift?
  5. We've owned our '71 brand new, Bro preserved for his son for years, but ready to sell. The more we delve, the more we find. Heck, didn't know a Tar Mat existed, and again, learned so much. My question is, having had offers, but reluctant to let it go before setting up Paypal eBay, etc., when do you stop "tinkering and fixing" and letting her go? Clearly, the ultimate buyer of a '71 treasure has their own agenda/parts and other cars to incorporate into the mix. A novice like yours truly tinkers and learns, but likely spinning wheels, ! http://asta.bizhosting.com/november_updates.htm http://asta.bizhosting.com/240z-b4_after1.htm
  6. So, Ron, how can novices like yours truly help? The era of motor racing (going back to the original Z and now) .... what do you envision? Gads, I see the beauties that people have recreated on this site/ the gems that have been preserved/fixed up, the power these Zs have and just step back in awe. Just stepping in here on your thread and in awe, with a few thoughts.
  7. I must hasten to add that the original pictures before ripping up the Tar Mat, sure looked better, car sounded quieter, but we learned so much.
  8. WE learn something new here every day! Wow! When Ron said "Ron wrote " I hope I represented the Z community well.' SO 100% on spot! Wowie-Zowie, I'm a computer techno person, never car-expert, but you've all sure shown all of us onlookers stuff. THANKS! WHEW! http://www.classiczcars.com/forums/showthread.php?p=235777&posted=1#post235777
  9. SORRY! the picture of the rust under the battery didn't show, so trying again. The weatherproofing (or rubber gaskets at the top of the hood when you open her up is old and crunchy and likely how/why any water would have gotten in and collected). I have photos of those, and looks kinda easy to replace; though not sure. Anyway, in the interim, covered her up to keep her dry! Much needed rain should come tomorrow. I was thinking that I'd include this basic 240Z link on eBay next Thursday when we bite the bullet and put her out to bid. It makes sense to share the link to this site and all the expertise derived, no? Additionally think it's only right to share this site because it's been a learning experience and we've all appreciated the help and others may also benefit from the links and interactions and history/disclosures of this Z as we've gone through the process. WHEW!
  10. I had the before pictures, and fairly confident they're here on this site in my many attempt to share and show. Hindsight! Not the greatest of things. ":0(
  11. First of all, thanks! You've been so helpful, and patient with a novice like me (us). We have neither the skills/patience nor the tools to continue updating things with our Z and that I'm thinking that much of what we've done the past 3 months will likely be undone and redone by the ultimate buyer of our gem. The loudness is kinda neat.... it shows/resounds the energy of this baby. I do hope we'll list this on eBay next Thursday to sell it (checking with my brother to confirm within the next week, but think we're on point with that goal). I feel as though I've spent tons of hours doing things that will be redone and thus wasteful since ultimately, most of my/our novice efforts will be completely irrelevant when the bottom line is "new owner" who'll do their own thing with her. GADZOOKS! Who'd ever have thought that fiddling with a 240Z would be such an adventure. To me, it's been a real learning experience, but I would not have had it (nor any of us) without you and this site. There is such magnificent dedication and skill here that it's a tad mind-boggling. I/we've loved every minute of it. The only downside I personally feel, is that she feels kinda like a piece of "us" and that I want to fix everything that isn't 100% perfect. Again, no skills, but worked it. The bummer is that the more I fiddle and seek, the more I find (maybe because I've messed with the wrong wire or whatever). The wipers worked fine, now not. Followed some recommendations to clean the engine bay stuff with "green" (forget the name for now), and maybe killed the wipers. WHEW! End of rant. Anyway, thank you thank you thank you. My thinking at this point is to STOP STOP STOP our work and let her go! Am I wrong? (remember we have little Z skills and limited tools).... We've had people in the area check her out and intrigued at the $4100 so maybe we should just really STOP! Here are the things that I've found which I was happier not knowing, but want to share: Roof has old not beautiful clear coat peeling. I applied wax and it looks nifty. Then I wet it down and take my fingernails to scuff off the peeling shiny layer and it works. Then was that and it looks nifty. It's needing someone who knows what they're doing. Clearly, the new owner will want to do everything on their own. Also see that when the boot tromping creep at the "WHO" concert tromped the Z and my brother had it all fixed, some residual scuffs/scratches are showing through, though minimal. Then another expert here recommended that I check out the underneath of the battery and I find that it does have rust in the engine bay under the battery. ?????????????????? what do you think of all of this? Am I a space cadette, or is it plausible to STOP and put her out to bid? I hope to add some more pictures here of my findings... hope I can. Hang in there and again, at the cost of redundancy THANKS BUNCHES!
  12. Well, replaced the fuses, but still no go. Hopefully some picture/update here will trigger some comments and additional ideas. http://asta.bizhosting.com/november_updates.htm Thank you. Hopefully someone will stop by here with other things to try after we use the newly purchased Volt Meter. Novice novice novice, that's me. ":0)
  13. Wow, Arne, what a job! It's definitely a bit louder. Some updates on our stuff here: http://asta.bizhosting.com/november_updates.htm The more I learn, the more I realize there is to learn. Whew! ":0)
  14. Thanks bunches for taking the time! My Hubby spent the past 2 days ripping out the Tar Mats (chisel/hammer/muscle) and it was enlightening! Same as before the Tar Mat was taken up, little discoloration, but also little rust so I'm thinking they're one in the same. All I did was to dilute CLR with 50% water and a rag to just rug things down, and followed up some with a wire brush, and it all looks good/silver and is LOUD! Now that the tar mat is gone, it just sounds a bit louder, though still GOOD! Very Z-like! Will follow up with pictures soon (maybe). Want to get things done, wrap it up and put her out to bid! Here's my thing! We keep doing stuff, but we're not in any way experts, and potentially spinning our wheels, 'cause eventually the Z lover who is luck enough to buy this one, will put his/her own spin on things so don't want to keep spending $s and energy doing stuff that will be redone! Thank goodness for hubby and his muscles, 'cause there's no way I could have gotten all of the things done that he's help magically fix (seat, etc.) Keep smiling, it's a sweeter image than a frown.
  15. Could not say it any better than Jason did. HATS OFF 2 U big time!
  16. Well, nowadays, you'd see my hubby and yours truly on the road every few days or so lovin' it B4 we sell my Bro's treasure. This excellent place has given us some recommendations (hasten to add we're total novices in the super Z car-zone) ... and we're up to our eyeballs learning/fixin'/workin' it! AND!!! Love drivin' her around these East Bay streets; heads turn, and the For Sale sign just went up in the windows on our drives. OK, must admit, miss my power steering, but wheelin' this baby and listening to her/him ROAR is exciting. Just ripped up (thanks, Hubby) .... the tar mats to prove things to ourselves.... what a job. Whew!
  17. :stupid: I'm not sure how I stumbled on that question, looking for something completely different and didn't see a date, but I did and am laughing so hard. Thanks, that's so funny!
  18. Curious if you've tried again to access via SAFE MODE so you can get to Device Manager, and if you have Administrative access. Sometimes if its merely a missing system file, and have the XP CD handy, executing this: start -> run -> sfc /scannow (space after sfc) may help restore missing key system files. Also, as stated, if you've suffered an intrusion, the first line of defense is always to scan your entire system (all files, including the heuristic scan options with updated virus definition files) whether using Norton or McAfee, or whatever (some freebies out there as well), to eradicate the intrusions may prove helpful. System Restore functions would need to be turned of if you've truly been 'invaded" so that after the cleanup you're not again reintroducing the culprit back into the environment. 2 cents worth; know your pain ... Curious what you may have done recently to cause this change - new hardware or software installed? Freeware often comes along with problems - Errors found in Event Logs that may help? Running ANY viruscan applications with updated virus definition files along with spyware tools? Lots of other links/ideas here: Microsoft still has a 90 day free trial for some help here (free): Try Windows Live OneCare: The always-on security and performance service for your PC Windows Live OneCare works quietly in the background on your computer, helping protect your PC from viruses, spyware, hackers, and other unwanted intruders. It also goes beyond security, regularly backing up all your important files and automatically cleaning up and tuning up your PC to help keep it running at top speed. Antivirus Removes viruses, worms, and Trojan horses Scans and cleans attachments, downloads, and other files Updates automatically to counteract new threats Antispyware Helps protect your PC against pop-ups, slow performance, unwanted programs, and security breaches .... and more, source link here: http://onecare.live.com/standard/en-us/purchase/trial.htm?sc_cid=mscom_srch Good luck.
  19. Thank you for your excellent guidance. Much to do; would a hair dryer work to heat the tar mat?
  20. Beautiful! I've never seen a 240Z convertible before; what artistry at work.
  21. Gadzooks! Think I lost everyone here, thread died a sad death. Sorry if I didn't incent response. Sure thing, it's not "new", but it does work, is adjustable and feels comfy. It's what I thought to be a creative solution to the driver's seat bottom that cost me less than $80 and only 2 weeks of my time (not full time, ) ... and works for us. Given the reality that whoever actually is the new owner of our Z, will most likely have his/her own agenda in terms of goals/restorations and the like, it makes no sense to us to invest more $s. Appreciate the time and energy from this top notch team! Your expertise and willingness to help novice types like yours truly is awe-inspiring!
  22. I guess I lost you, CarlB, when you said "No fun removing that tar mat - but doing it NOW might save you the expense and work of replacing the floorboards six months from NOW." and I responded. Are you still listening to this thread? I just don't get how or why a car that has not been in snow/ice/salt, etc., would have these kinds of issues. I've posted every picture ever taken since we embarked on the journey to sell our 1971 240Z, and even at the shop up on the lift for the first time in 6 months or so, didn't look troublesome. Maybe I still have more to learn, but asked the specialists at the shop, and they thought it looked quite good. We'll be putting our Z up for bid this month (November), and will continue to explore/drive/assess our '71 240Z and appreciate all the help we've found at the Classic Z Cars site, and felt an update here needed. Again, thank you for caring and sharing your expertise. ":0)
  23. Sorry for the delay in responding, Dave. Animated gif images are great; think you've incented me to create one soon on our own. It's not hard to do, for sure, I so use/like lots of SW that works, one of which is Adobe Image Ready which I use after modifying images in Photoshop, creating layers and then moving to Image Ready to import the .psd image and create the movement/animation and convering to .gif. Will give it a go when time permits. Thanks all!
  24. Spoke with him and he is as baffled as am I. He never asked for any tar mat pull ups, or replacements or the like. We sure don't want to rip into anything, or drill stuff or whatever to ruin what is. Sorry, I don't get it. The hold I mentioned has normal rubbery kinds of plugs from what I can tell, and one of them apparently degraded and was wiped out by me when I was scrubbing things/cleaning things. The old Z mats were kinda dry underneath, so I cleaned them and stiched supporting indoor/outdoor carpet to them (makeshift) to retain original stuff as best I can, and minimize cost, thus the price to sell/recover. Looks brighter, cleaner and the old mats aren't great, but work for us. Again, we're selling our Z, and most likely the buyer ultimately will have way more stuff they want to do to restore and have their own ideals, so it just doesn't make sense to me to spent time/energy and $s at this point that haven't already been spent. BUT, here to learn. Again, thanks and appreciative.
  25. Just curious, Arne, when you said "I've had a total of three '71 240Zs. One nice, one project, one crushed" which saddened me, why crush? Couldn't you have sold it for parts somewhere like eBay or the like? Kinda new here, so if I'm in the wrong spot, apologies. ":0))
