door removal
Yes there is . Take a scribe and scratch a line all around the hinge to door jamb and the same on the door . This will help greatly when you reassemble the car . This way you can remove the hinge completly and not have a problem later . Gary

Brake Pedal Collapses?
Saro first do NOT depress the brake peddle untill you add brake fluid ! Do not ever pull the rod from the booster, if you do the disk mentioned above will fall from its position and the Booster will not work properly. When you install a new master cylinder bleed it first before you install it . then connect the lines and bleed the brakes starting with the right rear then the left rear then right front and the left front last. Do you know how to bleed the brakes ? Gary

Mismatch engine in a 280
Look real hard for hidden rust. Look under the carpet and see the floors on all foot wells. Look around the battery and also along the bottom of both front fenders just ahead of the doors, while you are down there have a good look at the door sills (rockers) and the floors under the seating area, the area just to the rear of the doors down low (dog leg) . These are the typical rust problem areas . As to the ZX engine , this engine has flat topped pistons , unless it is for a turbo application. This engine is the last evolution in the inline engine. I have one in my 240 . I am not intending to have a garage queen either and am not concerned about the numbers . This should be a good car , unless you find rust . Rust is the number one thing that will cost you big bucks to repair correctly .

So what are your opinions on other Z's? Im bored.
Sorry , Openion , who has an openion . Not me shurely. Don't get me wrong I truly love the Z . I favor the early car and have no interest in the later cars. But I also like the Morgan which most of our members wont even know what this is. For the record it is the trugh real sports car. Oak frame and small engine , a roadster and no top. This is old school to the max. They are still being built in England . Maybe this is why I love the 240 Z it is a more pure sports car. No fluff , just a plane driver experience . Simple and great to behould. Gary

The trouble I have with the later Za after the '78 , is they all look so much like all the rest of the cars driving around. They just blend in and do not stand out. They are great cars despite the look alikes . The 350z does stand out but so does the audi and the VW Bug. They are just ugly . I just cant get past the bloted look . I bought a Camery when they changed into the new body , this car has been the best value for years. Nissan blew it with the 350. Look at the PT cruser . they couldent build them fast enough. It looks like a old '37 Ford or a custom hot rod . All over the retro is the in thing . Once more the "big builders " don't listen. It has happened before and will happen again . Style will sell , this is what was the appeal for the 240 , the '55 T Bird , and the Porsha . It seems that the ''they'' cant help but to make a good thing bigger and heaver , year by year . Compair the '57 vette to the latest offering. Compair the size and the performance of the two . Look at the the years of supposed developement in the last 48 years. Drop a plane crate engine that in produced today in a '57 vette body and you have a four wheeled rocket. Nissan give us some style !

- engine paint
I may be wrong but I was told along time back that the Chrisler blue engine paint was VARY close. Gary- cam question
I agree with all that was said ahead of me . I would just like to add, that when you do a cam change , the rockers and lash pads and the cam that have been running together have worn in a pattern . If you change cams the rockers and lash pads should be replaced with new. Other wise the likely hood of the cam not lasting because of excessive wear is likely due to the mismatch . To go through the time and expence to do this for any used cam is not a wise move if you want my 5c (inflation ) Gary Another thought , the crank in the 260 block is the same stroke as the 280 . And one more thing , if by chance the 260 is an automatic the diff is a lower gear than a manual set up . This will give you a little more at launch, 3.54s vs. 3.36 . Not a huge difference but some .- Does Anyone Know??
Plus , without the vents . If you had the wendows up and shut the doors it would hurt your ears , also you would need to slam the doors if the weather striping is good . Notice the vent covers are sided so that they draw from the interior as you drive down the road . If you reverse the covers or have two lefts or rights the wrong one could scoop rain , dirt or maby a YELLOW JACKET into the cabin . That could be fun . I have had one fly into my sleve while driving and having my elbow on the window sill . It is amazing how many times they can sting you before you can stop and take your shirt off . Gary- This is why I speed!
Hell yes I was a LACity Fireman . And I pulled plenty of people out of wrecked cars as well as from fires. I did my fast driving on the drag strip , not on the street , at least like the speeds you are talking about. I lived on the edge for over 22 years . GARY- Overspray on seats
LAQUER THINNER AND ACEATONE ARE THE SAME ?? You need to change the filters in your spray mask .- Overspray on seats
I use Laquer thinner , it is less aggressive than aceatone I believe . However either will damage the finish if you are not careful . Dampen a clean white cloth with the thinner and gently wype accross the paint . DO NOT scrub and DONT SOAK THE RAG IN THE THINNER . Be patient and wait a min or so before you wype again. When you have removed the offending paint , if the finish on the vinyl is dulled . By some SEM Color Coat vinyl spray paint in Landau black . this will give the shine like the orgional finish . This spray is about $10.00 a can but it really good stuff . I have used it on my interior and am vary happy with the results . I found it in the automotive paint supply store where I bought the paint for the Z . Gary- HELP!!! (painting problems)
I dont know , mineral spirits will leave a oil film , I havent used turpintine in 30 years. From what I have seen , using the POR paint . I wouldent gamble . I think it will not bond , another thing if you dident sand the POR well and scuff it down or shoot the ticoat primer . Then ANYTHING you shoot over the POR will not last. It will come off , either peal of chip off. I have had a run of POR that has come from a opening , flow over a primed fender . Once it cured I simplely just lifted it off with my finger nail . This is why any time someone asks me about the stuff , I tell them to strictly follow the instructions on the label . You cannot cut corners , it is a three step process. The Mariene clean has something in it that will etch metal . I thought it was a simple good degreaser and sprayed it on one of my aluminum wheels to prep it before painting it with just rattle can . The Mariene clean etched the finish and dulled it , this is after I had spent hours polishing it. The metal ready also preps the finish and leaves a yellowish tint on rust and bare metal . I was told to use the Metal ready , even on the painted surfaces that were to be painted over with POR , this was after cleaning and using Mariene clean. I havent had any problem with POR not bonding to any finish that was prepped correctly . The only thing that has not gone right is when a seam that was not allowed to dry COMPLETELY and had moisture in it . The POR paint foamed slightly and I had to sand it and reapply a secound coat. It was on seam on the floor so I am the only one that ever will know that it is there . Moisture will cause it to accelerate the cureing process , this is also why in hi humidty it is not recommended to paint with POR . The moisture in the air effects the stuff. Gary :rambo:- HELP!!! (painting problems)
hard to say. many times if you just use your thumb nail and scrape it off it peals . I have seen it peal right away and after a time. If you sand the POR and give the top coat or primer '' tooth'' then the paint or primer will stick. If not it will peal. This is the down side to this type of paint.- HELP!!! (painting problems)
Well in my experience , the paint or primer that was shot over the POR , if it was not preped properly as directed by the maker . it will eventually peal off. This is clearly stated in there directions . By the same token if the surface was not preped as directed the por will do the same . Just wiping the metal with a cleaner or degreaser and using the por will not do , BELIEVE ME . The mariene clean and metal ready are a MUST . Plane and simple. If you want to gamble ??? GARY- no start
Like was stated before , what are you running ? Are you in the US ? Are you confusing the year built with the actual year of the car ? Injection in the USA started in '75 , with the 280 . One thing though , my engine would not fire if the tach was not connected . I have a ZX ignition but the stock 240s wouldent either . GARY- Will ya miss me ????
Rick , you will find both places to be fantastic. We spent 3 weeks in Egypt and loved every min of it . My wife went to turkey with her sister for a couple of weeks and she was vary much impressed. It's been a few years though and do look after your arse/ bum . I don't want to see you on the news . I will be looking forward to hearing from you when you return . Gary- Please help me find this
Bill I like that look as well but dident have the cash to weld up the holes and have the bumper rechromed . So what I did was to buy some stainless carrage bolts and I polished the heads and used them to fill the holes . I looks fine , at least to me it does . Send me a PM with your email address and I will send you a couple of pictures . gary- HELP!!! (painting problems)
I just finished going through what you describe. First the yellow film left after the metal ready is supposed to be there , leave it alone. POR is ment for places where you are NOT going to finish with a top coat. Like the hood or fenders. POR is for places like the floors , firewall , tranny tunnel and so forth. Do the POR first then wype down the car with grease and wax remover. This a must , than shoot the primer , I used epoxy primer over the bare metal that was going to be shot with the color , top coat , then after the epoxy primer cured then we shot the sanding primer. Rattle can primer in most cases IS NOT compatable with the top coat . So be careful what you are using . Ask the paint vender about compatability before you use it. You dident say what you are going to use for paint. the reason I caution you about the POR is because once it is cured nothing will stick to it , unless you shoot it with the ticoat primer from POR , or sand the POR which is not easy because it is so hard a finish once cured . Or apply the reguler primer or paint before the POR is cured and is still tacky. Asfor the rust in the cracks . If you have preped the area as the directions state , just brush the por in the cracks and flow it in . It will penetrate and seal the seam , especially if you do this from both sides . I have used alot of the POR and I like it . Be sure to use rubber gloves because it loves skin and if let to cure , wich it will quickly on skin , nothing will remove it . If you would like any more info on this stuff send me or escanlon a PM . Gary rust converter is the same as the metal ready . :rambo:- Breather filter on valve cover
No it wont have and effect on the idle on a 240 or 260 but on the 280s it will . The side effect of a little filter on the valve cover is you will have fumes in the cabin . If this on a carbed Z with the stock air cleaner there is no advantage in not connecting the hose to the the air filter like was done originonally . GAry- This is why I speed!
