Swapping Out the AFM

Recommended Posts

Can I change out the AFM (Air flow meter) myself? Dealer did a tune-up and tells me the egine is way rich ("off the scale") and wants to charge me $600 for the AFM alone  . So I think I will give it a go, or have the regular service guy do it?

VB and MSA both have the AFM for under $200 with a $100 core.

My aim with this one is to end the dripping of liquid (gas?) out of the tailpipe. I think I might get an addition few mpg out of this too (currently ~18, would like 22 (400 miles per tank).

thx.

600? Yeesh.....

By all means, get yourself the new AFM, get yourself a brand new Factory Service Manual for 75 bucks if you don't have one already, and change it yourself....

It's only a couple clamps and 4 bolts and a wiring harness to undo... oh, there might be a vacuum hose hdiding underneath too...

The factory service manual will tell you how to properly set the AFM..so for half the price, you have the satisfaction of knowing it's done at least as good, and in some cases, better than a shop would do it...

Just ask ZMeFly..... sometimes doing it yourself is not only more rewarding, but a heck of a lot better than someone doing a half-arsed job on it.

I mentioned the phrase "go to a show" and right away the tekkie at the dealer started seeing $$$!!! He tells me I'll need to renew just about everything to get it working right, starting with that junky wiring harness. I tried to explain I want the engine working right & 'reliable' so I can go TO car shows with my Z. Some people at the local cruise-ins get a kick out of that ol' beastie, so I thought I might fix it up fairly well as well as the GTO body kit I got.

So I'll look into the factory book. It might be a (little) better than the Haynes book?

Some people...

Oh SPORK - It's a "79 280Z" but some will say it's a 280Z built 11/78.

contact me via email at [email protected]

thx.

I inquired at the local Nissan dealer about getting the FSM, and they don't carry it. I even heard you can get it on CD somewhere. Anyway, the dealer gave me the number of a local publisher, who could print out a copy for me for $75. Maybe that's what the others are talking avout.

Do it yourself, it's very easy. By the way, what model car do you have? I have several used AFM's that I could sell for $60 and down.

for the AFM, I would suggest buying carefully from eBay, unless you have a more trusted source, like a local Z boneyard or auto salvage.

I got my FSM from Courtesy Parts. It wasn't too expensive, and comes on a beautifully- made CD with a good case. I printed out the sections as I needed them (rear axle/suspension, frt. axle/suspension, body, electrical, etc.) and bound them with spiral wire so it will lay flat. I keep a copy of the files on the computer so I can search them. Don't forget a spare notebook from the dollar store to write your own notes, sketch electrical circuits, etc.

It's also nice to have a real paper version of the FSM. The Xenon download is fine for printing out sections etc. and many of them, like the 1978 are actually the same copy that Courtesy Parts puts on a CD. Free is better than 'wasn't too expensive' IMO. And to the guy that awakened this 7 year dead thread: those cd's are available for much less than the $75 you claim to have paid for them (if that's true, they saw you comming/the often misattributed P.T. Barnum theory!), and even less than the $50 you said you'd sell them for and on top of that, as stated, all of the info on them is available free on the internet.

Let's see: you come on a site, likely set the record for resurrecting the oldest thread ever, also hyjacking the thread on top ot that, offer to sell us something we can get for free, and the cop an attitude when that's all pointed out to you? Now, who's acting like an arse?

If I new it was free I wouldn't have paid for it.(EBAY plus shipping was actually $74.00) I don't have an attitude, I just thought it might help, again not seeing the date, I was just looking 4 parts. You are the one who had to put me down and then point it out. You could have just been nice and educated me without the extra's.

Thanks,

Bob

This is the point at which this needs to drop. I'll only say one more thing. You say "I don't have an attitude". Actually, you do. You did the name calling by calling me a jerk whereas all is did was repeat your 'acting like a arse' comment. I didn't 'put you down' anymore than anyone else did. Chalk it up. You read a much more sinister intent from my posts than was intented. It's not that serious. Let it go.

I sense a little hostility in this thread..

Just next time make your own thread instead of bumping a 7 year old one. Also I'd try not to call people jerks especially someone like sblake01 who's helped tons of people on this site (including myself) with trouble shooting.

Download the efi bible and go through that you may not even have to replace your parts. You might just need to clean the connections. Good luck.

Man You guys ...I did not see the date. I said it was done. And if no matter who they are act like it then they are. I made a mistake and got ripped from some one who had nothing to do with it and you guys just wont let it go. I made a mistake... Now?
