Google knows because you chose to use google password manager to remember your passwords.

I don't use password manager. I never have. I wonder if Mike is using some sort of Google product for the web site that recognizes passwords for forum members.

And why doesn't Google tell me where the data breach occurred?

It's a pop-up that happened when I logged in. It has to come from a forum software function, since that's where I input the password. Since I was in the forum software I went ahead and changed my password. It was a password that I've used on other sites, so it's not clear which site was breached. I thought that maybe this site was breached but apparently not.

It's not a website function and this site has not been breached. It's more than likely a Google Chrome thing telling you that your password was used on another site. Create a unique password here and you'll be fine.

I don't really know how passwords work. But, apparently, the password that I had been using was recognized by Google Password Manager. That's what the message implies. Even though I don't use Google Password Manager, so it must be running in the background. It's interesting that you say "apparently" it was a Google Chrome thing. If it's not Google then it would be some sort of malware impersonating Google. I wonder if the passwords are encrypted but still recognized as "the same" by Password Manager.

I appreciate the discussion jonbill. Not sure why my communication about not using Google Password Manager is not getting through. I don't have Google or Chrome save passwords.

Here is one possibility though - in the past I might have chosen to "stay signed in". I would guess that that requires the password to be saved somewhere. Maybe in Google Password Manager.

But, I never have asked Google Password Manager or Chrome or any other app to save my passwords. I type them in every time.

But #2 - your link (thanks for that), seems to explain it, and it fits what I suggested above. I guess I should read those Chrome/Google update notices. I didn't realize that Chrome had "access" to everybody's passwords. It's interesting that they do because it implies that they can compare passwords across multiple websites. If you had some sort of uniquely identifiable password they could have a list of every web site you had ever joined, if you used the same password. "Anonymous" of course. Plus they have time stamps of every time you signed in.

Nothng you do on the internet is really private.
