Body repair question - inside the hatch

Featured Replies

A month or so back, a picture of a very nice series 2 Z popped up on one of the million or so Z pages on Facebook. The car looked very original and the owner, Keaton, was heartbroken, he had been lightly tapped from behind and the body shops he had talked to were calling it ‘likely totaled.’ He lives in Indiana or Illinois IIRC. I have a friend who is a ‘sort of’ retired body guy in Superior Wisconsin so I hooked the two them up. As some of you know, I’m also a Porsche guy and Rick, the body guy is, I’ll say, mostly a Porsche guy. I think Rick has Keaton’s car on his Cellette bench now and is trying to get to know the details for restoring the Z. He sent me a question this morning about the finish under the rear deck. I think he needs pictures of what perfect looks like, because that is Rick - perfectionist. Mine has been repainted one time so I don’t want to represent it as what the factory did. Here is the message he sent me on the Porsche site:

Not pristine, but hopefully these pics of #6521 give you an idea. This area has not be reworked on my car.

My HLS30-69,??? early 1972 never painted.

#1 bottom of hatch where it meets the slam panel

#2 slam panel latch

#3, 4, 5 inside hatch shot of push button latch

#6 one of two holes under hatch where it hits slam panel with the plugs shown later installed

#7 empty hole without plug

#8 hardboard access cover under hatch where it hits slam panel. Cracked hardboard but my interior guy used some thin galvanized metal glued on backside to keep it straight.

Nissan rubber plugs for the holes. Measured the hole and my Nissan parts guy found them as "heater grommets"

I have access downstairs walk if you need more. No problem at all. I'm not doing anything ever...don't hesitate to ask.

A few pics of my undamaged 12/70 car prior to getting painted. Fair ly high-res, should be good for zoom-in for detail. @conedodger should we be sending pics directly to Rick?

Rick sent me pictures of the damaged areas this morning. It certainly appears to me that the unibody is slightly tweaked. He has a cellette bench so that can be resolved. He wants pictures of these areas if you have them.

It's pouring rain here at the moment but tomorrow I can get it out and get some pics of those areas. Mr Arnett will beat me to it with better pictures. He always does.LOL

95 and sunny here in the Dallas area. 🥵 I just sent Rick a Google Drive link with some current pics. Cliff really knows how to put pressure on a guy! 😉

Rick says he thinks he has what he needs. I will let you know if he needs more. Watch this thread for the result as well!

Thank you so much!
