Posted May 15, 200321 yr comment_37557 I just bought a 1973 240z and love it already. It runs well, I think. It smells like it runs rich, it has hitachi round tops(I hear they suck but they came with the car). Also sometimes if it is not too warm it will bog down and lose power if i give it to much gas a t a low rpm(I think that means it runs rich also). It has no ac belt and no other thing belt (my bro told me the other thing is a smog colector or something)? How do i know when to get the valves adjusted? (can i do this myself?) The car hadn't been started in 3 months and had 1 year old gas in it, it started and ran 130 miles back to dallas. It idles well at 1000rpm when i start it up but when it gets warm and I am driving it doesnt want to idle at 1k untill i have come to a stop and let it sit there for about 10 seconds... I dont have to use the choke to start up up (maybe cause I think its rich). Very powerful though...Any information would be much appreciated.Allen Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/forums/topic/6176-first-look-at-my-engine/ Share on other sites
May 15, 200321 yr comment_37565 One thing that will help us diagnose your richness is to find out exactly which carbs you have on the car. The '73 cars originally had Hitachi carbs, but they were slightly different to the earlier type carbs. The orig. ones were round, but the transition from the top horizontal part to the vertical side of the carb body was at a 90* angle. These are called flat tops. There earlier carbs had a more rounded transition and therefore they are called round tops. This link shows a good view of the "round tops": http://www.classiczcars.com/photopost/showphoto.php?photo=5279&papass=&sort=1&thecat=500If you have the flat tops, then our first suggestion is going to be "throw those boat anchors away!" They are very hard to adjust.this info needs to be determined first. May 18, 200321 yr comment_37849 If you need Round tops there going to cost you about $125. for a set at least. keep the '73 intake manifould. Also you will need the linkage that goes between the carbs . the round tops linkage is different length , also the Air caeaner from the flat tops is trash as well get the one form a '71 or 72 . I know of a couple of sets of round tops here in Portland ore. if you need them , let me know. :classic: just looked where you are , there are several Z drivers in your area , they can help withe carbs. I am sure. Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/forums/topic/6176-first-look-at-my-engine/#findComment-37849 Share on other sites

Bah, be nice. Those can be re-built and will work as good as roundtops at a fraction of the price!
