Nikki fuel pump

Recommended Posts

I have found a NOS Nikki fuel pump in my parts hoard. Still has zinc coating on everything, looks brand new. My question is there any advantage to have this pump over the standard fuel pump? I ask because I am one of the typical people with a built 280 motor and my su carbs seem to starve the engine and lean out on the top end. I have been wanting to add an electric pump but haven’t gotten around to it. And I know there can be many reasons why I’m leaning out, that’s not the discussion please.

The beer can looking fuel pump is aftermarket and not serviceable. The Nikki is serviceable if you can find the parts. If you need more fuel, electric is the right option. Run a fuel block off and add a relay to prevent the pump from running in an accident

My plan is to install the Nikki because I like the look of it. I will install an electric as well. From what I understand you can run an electric to push through the mechanical. That way if the electric fails I’m not stranded and I also may only turn the electric on for cold starts and running it hard and on hot days. As far as the safety relay, if I destroy the car in a wreck I may want to go with it. ?

I am running an electrical and a Nikki mechanical fuel pump on my Yellow 1971 Z.  I have the electrical on a switch and typically just use it for when I start the car, otherwise I run it on just the mechanical.  I use the electrical because I park my Z on a hill and don't drive it very often.  Takes forever for the mechanical to get the gas into the carbs when the car sits for so long.  With the electrical, I flip the switch, wait a couple seconds, then start the car.  Works like a charm.

Put an electric on today. No vapor lock at least I hope. Most of the fuel starvation went away but not all of it. Maybe modified needles would help but in the end the jenvey heritage ITBs will be installed.

I run a 10.5:1 comp L28 with a very ported head and large valves + high lift cam on twin Z therapy SUs with SM needles, mech fuel pump only.

Had the same problem as you before I went for a rolling road tune where they reprofiled the needles - it most certainly is no longer running lean!!!! The mech fuel pump is plenty man enough for the job.
