1980 280ZX flywheel and clutch kit advice

Hi Guys 

this is my 1st post in the forum.

I really don't have any good suggestion for my question! 

I decided to buy LUK clutch kit which fit to my car 1980 280ZX but the flywheel not included in the set

I made a search and I didn't find good flywheel. I found aluminum light weight but my friends didn't recommend it. 

I found Sach flywheel which is fit to 1980 280ZX 2+2 . its different than base 280ZX 

what do you guys recommend?

 

I am thinking to buy 1980 280ZX 2+2 clutch kit and flywheel and fix it to my 1980 280ZX

 

will that work?

The coupe is 225mm, the 2+2 is 240mm.  Your original flywheel is fine just take it to a machinists and have them lightened it up.  You'd want to get it resurfaced at least.

I have an aluminium Tilton and love it.  It revs up like a motorcycle, quick.  It takes a minute to get used to it but after that you won't notice the difference.  By the time I get up and out of my driveway it's fine.

Some people like the 240mm, more grip.  But I don't have that kind of horsepower.

If you go with the 2+2 clutch, like I did, you will need the 2+2 flywheel. The 240mm pressure plate has 9 bolts where the 225mm has 6 bolts. If you go with the 240mm I would lighten the flywheel or go for the aluminium version.

I lightened my flywheel. See attached jpeg. The blue text are the dimensions I used. Its good enough for street use.

The 225mm and 240mm flywheels are the same weight, but the disc and the pressure plate for the 240mm clutch is slightly heavier.

Some figures on installed load for original pressure plates:

225mm: 550kg

240mm: 780kg

The advantage of the 240mm pressure plate is a lot more grip with the original OEM pedal feel.

Like Cliff said, A lightened flywheel makes the engine more responsive. Probably the most bang for your buck on a standard engine.

Is there a reason for a new flywheel?  The originals are fine.  You could buy a 225mm or 240mm from someone on this forum for pretty cheap, probably cost more to ship it than what someone would sale you one for.  Those are something I would think would be "a dime a dozen" but I've never bought one.  I have a 240mm I'm gonna hang on to just in case I build my dream motor.  more horsepower needs more surface area for better grip.

Just curious though.  You do what you want, but I don't understand?

The synchro rings for 2nd and 3rd gear need to replace. that why i will change the clutch kit when the transmission is already down

There are still automotive machine shops around that will resurface a flywheel, for about $50.  You probably don't need a new one.

You live in Ohio.  There are probably five within driving distance of you.

I will do your advise. I will only order the clutch kit and i will resurface the flywheel
