1976 280Z Restoration Project

    I bought seats from a 77 280Z ($150 USD) for my series 1 so I could have the full forward and recline tilt. Got new foam from MSA ($150 USD) and leather covers for the seats, EBrake and shifter boot ($400 USD) from Interior Innovations so they all match with the red stitching. A friend helped with the seat upholstery and I did the mod for my series 1 seat rails to go on the seats. Here's my seat thread;

    Not sure what it would cost for this in Canada, but if you're going to use your original seat frames I would guess it would be no where near your quoted $2,400 for 2 seats.

    $2400 was for custom foams and covers. All of your prices are great in the states but seat foams alone come to $500 Cdn delivered. Exchange and shipping is a deal killer for most of us. I have seat covers and three sets of seats now. One of the sets has new foams so I will rebuild one set with those foams and my new covers.
    I am looking for a good supplier of rolls of vinyl for the other section pieces now.

    WOW!!! That's highway robbery. My shop did both my 300ZX seats in vinyl and cloth for "$850. Is he the only game for hundreds of miles around?

    I had three shops quote and they are all around the same price. Basically they are buying the same parts as me from the internet and up charging.

    Perhaps you could just not do the seats until after the car is drive-able, then drive to the states to put some break-in miles on, and get the seats done. Put them in as is, throw a piece of foam down and cover with a beach towel. Drive it down here to Colorado and I'll introduce you to my guy...just sayin'.

    Thanks, but I am good now. I have enough parts purchased from local friends to finish them the way I want.

    The fact we Canadians have to accept is that the cars we love cost about 40% more to restore here than in the US. We don’t earn 40% more than Americans to cover our costs and when all our parts come from overseas or the US, we pay that much more with exchange, shipping and brokerage.

    Today has been a lesson in patience... had to basically assemble the whole door to get the power window regulator installed. Still waiting for the door locks to arrive and this should be good to go.

    Why do cars cost more to restore in Canada? Is it a tax thing or just a smaller market resulting in higher prices.

    Because we buy most of our parts from the states. Our dollar is worth 30% less than yours so if we both make $50,000 a year, you actually have 30% greater buying power. Top that with ridiculous shipping fees, taxes, and brokerage and we end up about 40% more cost in restoring a car. That’s life.

    Now if only we could add a clause to NAFTA 2.0 that stipulates that all cars restored in Canada shall be purchased at a 40% premium. B)

    The CUSMA should help keep a lot of our costs down, but there are so many exceptions, it’s hard to say....

    Well that makes sense. You seem to be doing a pretty good job regardless. It could be worse, you could live in California, it has crazy taxes, and they are so strict on vehicle inspections it makes owning a classic car very painful there too. I used to live there and had a classic VW that I had to register out of state to get it on the road there. It one of the reasons I enjoy living in the South, its super inexpensive, and the states mostly exempt older cars.

    New NAFTA Sucks.

    We do not have much manufacturing in this province.  The largest employer in this area would be the 3 Michelin tire plants. They are about to announce moving one to Mexico with the New NAFTA deal.

    Hatch lined up nice. Refurbed (painted) gas shocks still work good.

    Only the outer seal installed as the inner seal won’t let the hatch close easily and will put off the body work. I will get the seals sorted later.

    Some more work on the nacelles today. After I got them coated with truck bed liner on the inside, I prepped them for paint. The last picture shows the high gloss clear coat and you can even see the ceiling filter and burnt out fluorescent bar! Very happy.

    I haven’t finished fitting the other side yet but it looks a little tighter.
    This is my bad. I didn’t hang the panels first before finishing the inside edges etc. I completely forgot and skipped that step in my rush to the finish line. At this point, I can do as you say and weld new metal to the edges, remove the door and fender, grind and finish the welds, repaint the panels and rehang them... a loss of a lot of work already done and adding a lot more time to the build.
    Or, I can work a small amount of edge fill in with fibreglas filler to extend the edge lines a little closer and have less gap and less repaint work on the panels. I am not too unhappy with the gap size as I think it will hide well on a dark car. I am more concerned with it being balanced to the rear edge which is also a little off top to bottom.
    Again, this isn’t a concourse car and I don’t expect perfection. I would really like to see this car on the road this summer and there is a ton of work to do still.

    In all honesty, they look as good as they did when new.  1970's gaps were never good and they varied a lot.  Leave it and be proud of your work.

    I am not done fitting the door too. It can be adjusted up a bit and that should help.

    I have seen worse, but I expected a bit better. Like I said, I can make this look better before I am done, I'm just not sure I want to invest the time welding and repairing the panels at this point. Lesson learned....

    The front of the rocker and the bottom of the fender in front of it have a slight step on the lower edges.  I think this is the design but if you decide to go at the fender, you may wish to take a look at this too.
