OK...

Umm.. well he wanted $5200 for it in the beginning..

that's Aussie Dollars.. The interior is a little rough. Cracks in the Dash and all that.. But the body seems to be pretty straight.

I didn't have a look at the car personally. Had a mate go around and look at it. I live about 3000km away from Sydney.

I managed to beat him down to $4200 over several weeks :D

The thing is i'm not too worried about the condition of the interior.

I don't want to really keep my Z that original anyway. I've got my 1969 Datsun 2000 Sports to try and keep Original.. but my 240z is going to be my play car.. if u get what i mean.

The guy reckons that the car has been lowered.. he talked to the fellas that put the cars on the trucks, and they said there mioght be some problem loading it.. and won't accept responsibility for any damage. But that aint a real problem, i should be able to get someone to drive the car for me instead.

Lowered though.. hmm..

And he's put a different diff in it too.. reckons it makes it easier to drive around town. This is worrying me a little. I won't to know why he had to replace the diff in the first place.. he probably thrashed it or something.

But anyway. I think i'll be getting a good deal in the end.

The fella told me all the rust was cut out of the car when it was repainted 5 years ago. I have no idea what is hiding under that paint. Hope it is ok though.

What i wanted to know is what you guys know about this actual car. I know every year they brought out modifications and the like. And i was told that the first ones were the best. ie. 70 models.

Just wondering what the 71 5th month versions are like..

??? :ermm:

Hope the deal works out for you. The picture looks good, and the price seems reasonable, there are other data information plates and positions you need to check before you buy any Zed. Heed my warning this car is in the Aussie capital of re-birth and it was not a white car from the factory.

The body number should read HS30 00738 and this will be stamped on the fire wall just above the brake booster behind the electrical loom and washer hose.

On the right hand forward strut tower low down is the manufacturers data plate, this will also have the body number engine number and hp limit, these two items the engine combined with the compliance plate should all match up. It is probably all ok but it pays to be safe. No manufacturers plate can prevent rego in Australia.

To the positive the compliance data regarding ADR's is correct for 5/71

I appologise for playing the devils advocate here but it may save big bucks.

good luck

Steve

Just Buy it. For $4200 its a pretty good buy if it's not too rusty to start with. If it looks like a metal patchwork quilt on the otherhand....maybe give it a miss.

Mine cost $4200.

not much rust, repainted 5 years ago, rust cut out (tiny bit where frame rails end, some in sills), Engine needs new rings (rebuild)

Paint job is crap and need strip and repaint to find and remove all the bog and surface rust. (photos in my gallery)

so yours sound like a better buy for the same price. My interior wasn't too bad though.

Drive down with a friend and drive it back.

Or get someone to transport it that doesnt have issues with it being lowered.

A mate had a REALLY LOW supra shipped by train from adelaide to perth with no dramas, so i dont see that it should be a problem

Well... The car turned out to be a piece of $^!#.

Dad went down to sydney on other business and had a look at it while he was there.

He reckons there wasn't a straight panel on the thing.

And the roof and bonnet showed evidence of past hail damage or the like.

So anyway. he went around to some guy that lubs his 240's

He had like 4 for sale or something, and 30 wrecks out in his yard.

Dad bought a white one that he thought was pretty good.

They guy also gave my dad some advice.

He said, look if this is the car that you love, don't spend money trying to do up an old P.O.S but instead buy one that someone has already put a lot of money into.

Cause there was this 260z there too for 16000$.

This guy had put 40000$ into it, but he had a stroke and can't drive it anymore. So his wife is selling it.

He reckons.. that the kind of car u should look to buy.

That's always debatable though, cause only you know what you want your car to look like i suppose, unless u find one where u agree with the last owners tastes in certain matters.

Anyway :D The car will be here tomorrow after a 3-4 day drive up from sydney !

Only one more sleep, i can't wait :D

YAY 240Z for me !

Later lads.

Yep, your friend is right.. if you want to restore a Z it's cheaper to buy one that's already done. Of course, you don't get the satisfaction of doing the work yourself and of course you dont get to choose what it looks like at teh end, like you said. That's the price you have to pay if you want to save money ;)

Upload pics when you get yours!

Congratulations Hawkwind. Hope your new car is what you were after.

I'm interested to hear where this guy that loves his Z's is with 4 for sale and 30 wrecks? It wouldn't be Sportsclassic would it?

Cheers

I agree that I'd like to know where people that post are living, but if that field is made mandatory for resgistration on the site, the majority of those people who currently do not complete that information, will simply fill it in with meaningless info such as "God's Green Earth" or "Paradise on Main Street". This happens on eBay all the time. Even when a specific geographical location is listed you cannot be sure that it has any basis in reality.

Just something to think about.

Hello

I think that I may be familiar with the white car you were considering buying. I believe it is the same one I looked at here in Sydney about 6-7 years ago when I first started looking to buy a 240z. At the time it was for sale in Kirribilli here in NSW.

It was in OK condition back then, but wasnt the car I was looking for. Big plus I guess is that back then it had the original L24 in it. It did have metal patches welded into both frame rails on the underside in the engine compartment area. The interior was also pretty trashed back then. It also had different wheels on it, factory 260z mags.

Steve, Im interested to know why you say it wasnt a white car from the factory based on the photographs that have been supplied. I have seen many cars with a black engine bay and it was common practice to rust proof the engine bay area of the car when new; the finish commonly being black.

You are right though, it definately wasnt a white car from the factory. I am of the belief that it was actually silver as the floor pans on the inside of the car are silver.

Hawkwind, you must let us know where you found this stash of 240z's for sale here in Sydney. It probably is Carlos, but I would like to know for sure.

If Carlos has so many z cars in his yard, why when I call him does he tell me he has no parts? Maybe just me I guess ;>

Let us know about the $16k 260z that is for sale as well.

I also want to disagree with the thread discussion a little. It is fair enough to buy a good car to begin with, something that someone has poured countless $ into, but where is the fun in that. I as a 240z owner enjoy fixing my car up bit by bit and spending money on it and improving it and making it into the car that I want, as I bet a lot of owners of z cars out there also believe in.

It is very hard to find a good z car here in Australia, I looked for over 5 years for a good 240z in original condition. At the end of the day I settled on a car that I could see had the potential to be what I wanted it to be, and I could make it into what I wanted it to be.

I paid $6000 for mine about 4 years ago. If I sold it today as it is I would ask $10000, but I definately wouldnt get my money back.

If you want an investment, leave the classic cars alone and go and buy some land. You will never get back what you put into a car when it comes time to sell it.

Sorry to go against the grain.

Joseph

Joseph, and all, I like to sit on the fence with this one. I think that buying a half decent car is the way to go. With these old cars there's always something to be improved so no matter how much you spend you can spend a bit more. I don't think you could buy a car that you are completely 100% happy with (even if it's just rolled off the showroom floor) so no matter how much you spend, be it a heap of s**t or a nice example, you will always have the pleasure of tweaking it.

cheers

carlos has a lot of zeds in his yard but bugger all 240's. the problem is he parts come of of wrecks that have no cover so alot of them are stuffed. he's got alot of mechanical stuff, diff's gearboxes, mounts, that kind of thing.

240z in OZ,

If you look at the compliance plate the colour other than black appears to be 918 Kalhari Tan, a Dulon colour that is the right age for a Zed with a chassis number HS30 00738 compliance 5/71. So My guess is that Zed Came from the factory as 918 Kalhari Tan.

My 2c

Hmmmm, looks more like rust to me ;>

If this is the case it is definately not the car that I saw all those years ago as the one I looked at was definately originally silver.

BTW, next time you plan on heading south from Newcastle give me a shout and we can hook up. Im only about 10 min drive off the Sydney-Newcastle freeway.

EH lads. Yer 3000 kms from Sydney. I had a guess it was about that far. I'm in Townsville, North Queensland.

OK i think the 8,000$ 260Z is the blue one in the pics.

Mine is the White one.

And mum reckons this the guy that owns the red one with the Air Intake on the roof has spent 100,000$ on it.. omg..

I don't have any pics of the 16,000$ one. Or if i do i don't know which one it is. The parents took all these pics.
