Pilot bushing '72 Z

Featured Replies

Should a new pilot bushing fit completely inside the fly wheel? I just installed one and it went in about 7/8ths of the way,,,any help is appreciated...thanks

The outside edge of the bushing should be flush with the inside edge of the bevel that is cut in the crank opening:

I had one that was too big to go in as far as it should. I had to break it out with a chisel, get a different brand and try again.

thanks I appreciate the help,,,I knew I could count on the club!

It may be that your flywheel has been milled too many times.

The pilot bearing goes into the crankshaft and has nothing to do with the flywheel.

yeah using the "flywheel" term was my bad,,,,I know the pilot bushing is inserted into the crankshaft...

was it too big length wise?...

The diameter was too big. Probably just a plus tolerance in a minus hole. I just mentioned it as an example, sometimes things just don't fit. The second one tapped right in to the proper depth. By the way, the depth is important but it's not super-critical, it doesn't have to be perfect. The end of the mainshaft extends through the bushing, so a mm either way wouldn't matter.

Put mine in the freezer for a few hours, went in pretty easy. First time I ever installed a clutch, flywheel combo.
