Anyone ever smoothed out a balance tube?

Featured Replies

I just realized that I already posted this and got some good responses....I'm getting old.

blame it on age

I'd love to get one of those. Trying to change my Z to euro model for obvious reasons.

I would love one like that.

The only one I could find on the planet is from Z Therapy... $150 + $60 core + $20 shipping.

I really like the way mine turned out, can't have enough polished bits. The intakes will be next.

I took the one from my '73 and cut the extra "lobe" off the bottom, along with some of the brackets on the top, (I used a combination of a band saw and angle grinder). There was a small hole that I had to have welded up where the egr valve was. It was a lot of grinding, sanding and polishing but it came out nice.

tlorber, That is my plan. Did you cut and smooth before you had the opening welded shut?

I would say I did most of the cutting and grinding before the weld so that I knew what the contour should be. Obviously the welded area will need to be sanded and polished as well.

Try Norm at Zeddsaver...he provided me with EVERYTHING to remove the Webers on my '73 inlcuding a new, never used set of '72 SU's, linkages, heat shield and euro balance tube. I don't recall how much the balance tube alone was, but I'm very much looking forward to the clean appearance this will bring, along with the new Stahl header.

After the welding, were you able to polish the welds? Did it all come out equally shiny, like it was solid aluminum, or can you tell where the welded spot was?
