I have owen Z since they came out , at first I used Castrol 30W then 20/50 , the last ten years I have used Mobil 10/30 Synthetic now here lately I have read about Zic how much old cars need it . Clasic motorsports has an add by Penn Grade high performance oil and they state they have the zinc aditive. I have not used it but I am going to try it out next oil change if it does not cost that much. here is a link.

Mobil 1 15W-50 has 1200ppm of ZDDP. Enough to keep the valvetrain happy on our Z Cars. It flows well down to 20 degrees---so start up is a snap. And it's GREAT in the summer heat here in S. Florida.

i bought 5 cases of vr1 enough for about 3 years . My car sees maybe 100 miles a week tops. I live out in the country and have very nice roads and curves. It gets its work out 3-4 times a week on the curves and gets driven hard. I use the car for fun and thats it. in fact it rarely sees a gear higher than 3rd.

15W-50 would work great in Florida or Mississippi, but Wisconsin? An unbearably hot day in Wisconsin is 85F. The old joke about the state implies that at 20F people would still be wearing short sleeve shirts.

But to be serious, I will not put any oil in a car with a weight below 10W-X even as far South as Indiana. I have Mobil-1 0W-40 in the Z right now. It seems to have plenty of oil pressure, but then the engine is still recently rebuilt and I do not have very many miles on it yet.

I have had friends destroy engines by running heavy oil, admittedly 20W-50, in the fall and winter. It just will not get to the bearings at start-up.

My buddy used to run that crap in his 3000gt 6g72 motors have a tough time in normal condition not spinning bearings. *sigh* some people.

That would be an old school SBC. I run 5W-30 in my LS2.

What about the oil filter, doesn't that matter too?

Oil filters are also very important.

I personally use OEM, WIX Premium, or NAPA Gold (wix premium). I think Car Quest premium are also Wix premium filters but they were twice what the napa filter cost me. I don't use Fram anymore.

Buy a bottle of Redline break-in additive. It's loaded with ZDDP. A 16 ounce bottle is good for 2 oil changes. 16 bucks. Use whatever oil suits you. Don't use diesel oil in a gas engine.

I'm aware that vetterben said "not a debate please" but I have to react to that blanket statement. Isn't that a contradiction? Evidentally, diesel engine oil suits Jeffrey. Is there some scientific reason why oil for a diesel engine won't work in a gasoline engine? Most diesel engine oils actually exceed the lubricity requirements for gas engines.
