I have some questions regarding what is considered a modification for a ZCCA event. Has anyone been a judge at such an event?

I agree with Vicky, download the judging forms and you should have all the information you need. However, if you still have questions please let me know as I have judged an event or two where we followed the ZCCA forms.

I have the rules and read through them. What I find unclear is what is considered a modifiacation. Engine Block for instance. Would changing the color from the original blue to black be considered a modifiacation? Or the exhaust manifold. Are headers a modification? Cylinder Head / Valve cover. Polishing the valve cover, modification?

I judged the stock class with Jeff Fox at last year's national convention. I have judged a number of local car shows and I was once a Chief Scrutineer for the SCCA. My local Z club gave me the honor of being Lead Judge for the past Florida Z Fest. I plan to judge this year's national convention. ZCCA has a judging certification program and I am not yet certified. Plan to do that at the convention. "gnose" is a certified judge and I talk to him quite a bit. The Street Modified Class allows up to 15 visable modifications and the Nissan Modified Class gives you 25. Page 7 of the ZCCA manual outlines each class.

I feel that the ZCCA rules are liberal enough to allow everyone with a CLEAN car to win. If I could make any comment it would be that in order to win, one must be CLEAN. Really nice cars loose all the time because they are dirty. We could go on about what part belongs on what car and how the rules don't address this or that, but I really feel that the conversation is mute because the cars we are talking about are dirty and who cares about a dirty car at a car show!

And here, let me get on my soap box. I like the ZCCA rules and think they address just about anything that can be done to a Z and win a car show. I've seen guys play the classes to get a trophy rather than put their car in what might be considered the proper class. There are all kinds of ways to win a car show - even Stock Class. I've seen guys "fabricate" original parts, alter incorrect parts to look correct, all kinds of things. Know why they won? Their cars were clean. Look at the way the scoring works; 0 point deduction for brand new / 10 point deduction for junk. What's average? Dirt. No rips, no tears, no smudges, scuffs, cracked spoiler, bug remains, oil spatter, sand, brake dust, smears, stone chips... Shall I go on? C L E A N

Thanks for letting me bleed. Clean cars are 5 mph faster than dirty cars and that's a fact!

Don't forget to clean the INSIDE of your tailpipe. The ZCCA judges at the 16th annual convention stuck their fingers up Zrushs' tailpipe.........with no cigarette afterwards . Fortunatly, I have great experience in cleaning and detailing cars and passed the tailpipe exam.

The best way for you to make sure you've gone over everything is to print the judging sheets and go judge you're own car.

If cleanliness plays such a big factor in such events, I believe that the show should be held on the first day. Many conventions have race days, cruises and other things prior to the show. Then you have to spend an entire day cleaning your car AGAIN or forfeit participation in other fun Z events.

This is an interesting post. I have often wondered how the judging would go at the National Convention. I have read the rules and participated in several local shows, but never the Nationals. From what Vicky has said in the past, they sound REALLLLLLLY picky.

I have often wondered how they would react to my '70. It's really pretty much bone stock. I can even put in the original radio and "D" hubcaps. The only issue it has is that the PO painted it a non-stock color. It's pretty nice, but not stock. Would that make it an automatic loser in the stock class? Are any mods allowed in stock?

ZCCA rules are very simular to AACA (Antique Automobile Club of America) rules. AACA judges do not touch your car, they ask you to open doors, hoods and can even ask to verify if items work on the car, for example reverse lights. ZCCA judges allow a couple hours to prep your car then at a given time you must back away from your Z and cannot go near your car when they are judging. Of course, you cannot speak to the judge unless they ask you a question. Some people not familiar with high end shows might find this obsurd, but I feel this is the correct way. I've paid an entry fee, cleaned the hell out of my car, I want the judges full attention on my car.

The kicker is, to break a tie, they can pull wires to verifiy cleanliness. Go to a local AACA show in your area and you'll get and idea of how a ZCCA show runs. Of course AACA has different classes. My 240Z was in the same class as a Ferrari.............and the little Z won, priceless

I have even heard of the final score on a pair of cars that are tied in points coming down to having all the slots ( or whatever) in the SCREWS (door screws, head bolts, or whatever) aligned the same.

Do you think you could align the hubcaps without taking them off? I think it's not likely that your wheels (hubcaps) would be at the same position when you park the car. So you just lift up thewheels to turn the cars to get the "D" to be correct on all four corners

At a given time you must back away from your Z and cannot go near your car when they are judging.

That's how things were at any car judging I've been to. Except it they were regular cars, not Z. Besides, you wanted to go look at the other cars anyway.
