I have a 73 240Z with a ZX five speed & 3.54:1 diff. Lately when I shift into fifth I hear a noise coming from sort of behind me....like it's the rear end or an axle, but kind of on the driver's side and not as far forward as the gearbox. However, this makes no sense because it's definitely drive-train noise and if it's the rear end, wouldn't it make sounds in all gears, not just fifth? It's not quite a grinding (like bearing failure) but more of a rumbling type of sound. I know sounds travel and can be hard to pinpoint with all the other noises happening while driving but it's weird that it's so magnified only when in 5th gear. I'm reluctantly thinking it's the trans…

Hey guys, the Z had a rough day. One of my U joints on a half shaft busted and I am having the hardest time replacing it. Basically, the U joint where the driver side half shaft meets the wheel assembly wore out and the shaft separated from the U joint. Unfortunately, when the shaft separated, it banged itself loose, damaging the yoke that holds the U joint. I believe that I need to replace the whole shaft, since it's damaged, but I can't source one anywhere! Any ideas? Thanks!

I developed the dreaded "rear end clunk", while shifting into 1st and 2nd gear, about a month ago. I read enough on here to look at the rear diff insulator 1st, and sure enough, its was broken in 2 pieces. I have already ordered a new one from Courtesy, should be here in a few days. My question is, could my old arrestor strap have contributed to this, by allowing the nose of the diff too much movement? I'm not sure if that's even what the arrestor strap does, but I'm wondering if I should be replacing that at the same time? It looks fine, not broken, or even frayed, but I didn't know if they could stretch and contribute to the stress of the diff insulator. I would…

So I ran seafoam treatment (1/3 in crank, 1/3 in gas tank, 1/3 through vacuum line) and afterwards car was difficult to start, but I was able to start it each time. After I would get it started it ran very strong after 2500 RPM, but sputtered below. I've since changed oil (as part of sea foam treatment), spark plugs, wires, rotor, distributor cap. I've also cleaned off contacts for the distributor and ignitor. The last few nights the car wouldn't start at all. Today when I went to start it I heard a POP (backfire?) and some smoke (very little) was coming out of the air cleaner box. I noticed one of the carbs was low on fluid so I topped it off with ATF. I may have damaged…

I recently got my 72 240Z and i replaced the old slave cylinder and cleaned the master. Even how hard i try to bleed it, it wont move a bit. Is the master cylinder pushrod too short or could plain air cause this? I've got another smaller Datsun but it never had problems in there

I have a 77 280z that is fuel injected. When the car starts (sometime it doesn't) it will idle up to around 1200, and run well until the throttle is advanced. As soon as that happens the rpm's bottom out and the car dies. Occasionally, the car will start, but will only idle at about 600 and then dies quickly. Here is what I have done so far: New fuel pump, good pressure. New EGR valve. New air regulator. Cannot find any vacuum leak. When the car runs, the exhaust feels fine and there is no visible damage to the exhaust system. Cannot find any obstruction in the air intake... I am running out of ideas, can anyone help? Thanks very much.

Valve Keeper

I have a 1978 Datsun 280z w/L28 motor. First heard a ticking sound then it starting running bad like one cylinder. Checked the little stuff, all looked fine. Pulled the Valve cover and found that a valve keeper had come off the first piston (closest to radiator) on top of the 2nd spring. How can this be replaced and is it likely that a valve may be bent? It does still start but runs very rough still....no longer starting in fear to damage more (like the piston).

Hello guys. So recently I'm having a problem with my 1976 280z. The weather here in Tucson has been in the low 60's in the morning and when I come to start my Z it doesn't idle correctly. What I mean is, all other cars I have ever owned would idle high (around 1500RMP) until the motor was warm and then would come down. My Z does not do this. I have looked in the FSM for information about it but am having a hard time locating anything about it. Do you guys have any ideas? is there a way to adjust this? In the mornings it idles around 800 and when it warms it increases to roughly 1000. I am cleaning all the connections tomorrow to see if this will help but input would be n…
