Accelerated on a curved on-ramp, went about a half mile, then heard a rumbleing sound from the rear end. Anyone want to hazard a guess? Car seems to run o.k., but a somewhat higher pitched rumble is still present, although it`s not real loud. Hope it`s nothing more than needing oil ( It`s NEVER that CHEAP or EASY!). Regards, MikeT73

I have a 72 240Z that I am currently doing a ground up restoration on. The previous owner had put a five speed in the car and said it was an easy conversion with absolutely no modifications. When I pulled the motor and tranny the other day, the junk yard writing was still on the transmission indicating it came out of a Datsun truck. Is there any harm in this? Any benefit? What about handling added horsepower? ------------------ Jeff McElyea 1972 240Z jmcelyea@nassal.com

I need to replace or repair the diff on my '72. Current diff is a R180 and think it should be fine to replace with same. Where should I get one? How do I know to get a good one? How much will/should it cost? Is it difficult to replace it myself? If the stub axels need to be replaced should I do this at the same time? For the stub axles is this really a U-Joint issue or do the entire axles need to be replaced? Thanks for your input.

I have a 73z that the speedo has started playing up on. It would increase in speed slower than you were accelerating, like it had a lag, so I pulled the cable out and gave it a bit of lubrication. When I put it back in the speedo would not work so I drove it with the cable sticking out under the dash to make sure it was spinning, it all seemed fine. I put it back into the back of the speedo and it appeared to work correctly upto about 40mph then it stuck there, even when backing down the driveway. After I stopped it slowly crept back down. The Odometer is functioning correctly and seems to be recording the correct distance travelled. I am running out of ideas, the only th…

I recently put my 5 speed back in the car after the big nut on the end of the gearbox shaft came undone and let the 5 gear assembly slide back = no 5th gear. I replaced (all new parts): the mainshaft retaining nut, secondary shaft retaining nut, complete 5th gear and the large circlip on 5th gear synchro assembly. I took the car out for it's first post-op test drive and all seemed OK while I was ambling around the local side streets (taking it easy - you know how it is after major car surgery). OK, time to hit the highway and make sure cruising at speed is all fine. Oh dear. Happily sitting on 100km/h speed limit and it pops out of 5th - just like the original problem! W…

While I ended up purchasing these shocks, I found this information on my computer. It was put together while I was doing research about shocks. -------- Tokico Illumina Shocks: ----------------------- Looks like most current owners of Tokico Illumina's keep them set on one position most of the time. It doesn't seem to me that these are the kind of things you'll be adjusting often. Disadvantages: 1- Convenience. Don't expect to switch the suspension on the fly. I don't think you'll be able to say, "Oh, hey... look! There's a corner. Let me adjust my shocks." (faint sound of a car screeching to a halt, a door slamming, and the cussing of some guy trying to …

Is this a "garage mechanic job" or should I have a pro do it?

Fans of the ZX 5-speed conversions into 240Z's, (replacing a manual or an automatic, like mine), always run into the same problem: The shifter will not clear the tunnel opening and bangs against the plastic console in 1/3/5 gears. In my situation, I learned too late that it is not necessary to cut the tunnel and modify the console, as some have suggested. My understanding (not proven yet), is that using the shifter from a 78 5 speed, has a s-turn type of bend in it, which effectively moves the vertical shaft rearward two inches. This would solve at least the banging of the console, probably the tunnel cutout problem, and as a bonus, places the vertical shaft in the cen…

I've pulled my auto tranny, and have my 5spd ready to install. I noticed (and think I've heard this before), that the four bolts that hold the bellhousing to the block are shorter for the auto, and won't make it all the way to the block when the manual tranny is installed. The flange on the manual tranny is 1.5 inches, the auto is 5/8. So does anyone know if I can just estimate the length, or do you know the exact dimension? Thanks! ------------------ Rob72 5-spd/4.11/SU's
