A few 'simple' problems...

Mine look the same on both cars except one is full of rust holes.

A few 'simple' problems...
Can you take a picture of what you have done and post it. I am assuming that you are aware that thesome hoses tie onto the silver tubes adjacent the vacum storage bottle.

A few 'simple' problems...
I can only work by memory right now - I am on a ship about three hundred miles offshore. I have a good memory but it's very short. I will check to see if I have any pictures. There are lots of guys here with 280s - I expect someone can post a couple of pictures.

Just bought HLS30-00797
What a neat find! While I feel happy that you found this beautie, I am also pretty jealous. The chance of finding something like that locally is 0% and that is something you need to see first hand befor commiting any particular sum of money to. Someday... Congratulations.

A few 'simple' problems...
I agree, pretty well all the trouble I have experienced with my 280 heater controls have been related to the vacum lines - if nothing else that is the best place to start. Once you replace those lines you should take a good look at the remainig ones right back to the manifold, because even a small crack will fool up the entire system. The last time I had trouble it was a crack by a tight bend near the accumulator tank - I had to disconnect all the joints and inspect them to locate the problem. Probably just as well to replace all those lines and connections - 30 year old rubber it's going to fail eventually (probably sooner than later).

This could happen to you
Gary - what are you after with 350lb test? Freshwater tuna

New guy, old car
She looks pretty nice. What kind of rust are you talking about?

Desmogging the Z
I have most of that removed from mine and when I get home from this trip the smog pump is coming off as well. As to the air injector tubes on the manifold they are just too ugly - I am thinking a header is a good fix - at the very least they are coming off and being replaced with stubby bolts. I have no desire to maintain any of that gear. I have driven mine as she is - works fine, other than the occasional backfire.

Sneak peak of the 2009 370Z
After I sit in one I will know, but visually I am less offended than I was with the 350.

My 1970 240Z!
I am enjoying watching the dismantling of the car. It's like unwraping a present, not quite sure whats in there, even though you have a good idea. So far it's looking pretty nice. Hope the engine works out well too. I agree with your colour choice - original is the way to go.

New Slave.....No Result
I use the "bleedomatic" - follow the instructions and bingo. Works very well.

Ebay it....Part it...Etc......
I understand where you are coming from. Me - I like most of it and get some joy out of figuring it out how it works. You were implying that this one was practice for the next one. Are you still going to get another car?

What do you think
I find the sport ones too small - if you moved them six feet away from your eye the image would be pretty small wouldn't it and you would have to stop and get out of the car to adjust them. For work they would need to be on with velcro - I wouldn't want them but "to each his own".

What's up with these springs?
Logic states: measure when alert and sober (with tires completely inflated - one rear was light). Current trim .5" by the stern.

What's up with these springs?
I had the car out for a drive (about five miles) - I was doing several jobs at once, including new carbs, ball joints/tie rod ends/bushings, some electrical stuff, partial tune up.... Anyway the springs are installed .001 in front and .202 in rear - oh new shocks too (hp) and they are low numbers in front (extenders rear), bumpstops all around. Only thing I see is as stated earlier. Btw - did the 280 a couple of years ago - the springs are not the same. The 280 Eibachs did not have the bunched up coils and they were shorter (to the point that I didn't need compressors for two of them - don't recall front or rear, although I believe front). 280 spring worked out fine after some buggery with the shocks. I know it is not logical, but I just need to deal with the problem as it is. I'll try the easiest route first.

Fires but won't start or run
Do you still have the electric fuel pump hooked up? If so that may create a problem as well. I disconnected mine (it is still in the line (will remove in order of priority)) as directed by Bruce Palmer and it works fine. Had mine out for spin tonight, lots of problems, but none with power .

What's up with these springs?
Interesting... I just finished the suspension (amoung other things on 240) and based on the information in this thread I ignored the recommendation of the manufacturer to install with wording right side up and installed the front springs with tight coils on top (words upside down). I also have a the front height up significantly more than the rear - in sailing terms we would say she is trimmed by the stern by 1.5". I'm too tired to go at it again tonight, but no doubt it has to come apart again tomorrow. Gonna have to try out ZeroZ's method or get the hacksaw out.

Bolt identification markings
Same question. These are also on the outer ball joint fasteners.

Aftermarket side mirrors
Thanks, it pretty easy to take a good picture of a Z. You may find something more about them through the search function and Zhome.com .

Aftermarket side mirrors
I fhink they are a dealer option - part of a sports package. They are very common, but becoming more costly to purchase. One of our members was selling some. The swivel problem is repairable on some (if not rotted through), there is a couple of screws on a plate that fastens against the swivel ball - tighten them up and it might do the trick. I had two like that - turned out one was repairable - the other was not so good. Good luck

Still smokin
When I was looking at buying the car the PO told me the car had poor compression (110 all around) so befor committing to the car I started off talking to a freind who is a HD mechanic (he has great instincts for this kind of stuff) and he told me that it was likely gunky rings recommending that when I got the car to run it hard for a couple of hundred miles with deisel lube oil (heavy detergents) change oil and repeat. That was my intent but when I checked the compression I assumed the PO had simply done the test incorrectly, because my results were very good and I switched tactics. I don't have much background in mechanics - limited experience, talk and reading really, but I do pick up fairly quick and that makes sense that some rings would bind but not necessarily all of them. I did find that #5 and 6 seemed wetter than the rest. Could I still use the atf ?

Still smokin
Glad you guys said that - I have heard that the valve seals dry with time layed up and this girl had 15 years sitting in a garage and over the past two years has only had 200 miles of use (accordding to the PO) . The smoke is dark - I initially thought it was rich fuel mixture. It seemed to make sense cause the carbs were in very poor condition, but now not so much. Thanks for the tips.

Still smokin
Guys, I am looking for advise. I just got the 240 running after a few changes in an attempt to get her ruuning better and cleaner - the car was running after a fashion when I got it, but nothing that would live up to the Z reputation. It had a set of very troubled looking four screw SUs that had loose throttles, dipsticks from a 260 and a sticking choke, just a good case for replacing. I got a set of Carbs from ZTherapy along with a stripped down balance tube, set them up according to the book, installed new plugs and wires (NGK) and blanked any unused hookups for pollution gear. Pulled the choke and turned the key - it gave me a little fright, it started so aggressively, running perfect. I was sooooo pleased, however I did notice some smoke when starting, but it seemed to fade away quickly and nothing when at a steady rpm. When she was warmed up I sat in her and pumped the gas a couple of times to about 2K and noticed smoke in the garage (hose fell off the exhaust when I nailed her). Got out and nailed her a couple of more times from the engine comp while looking aft and she was belching smoke when hammered. Leaving some oily residue on plugs - but I haven't actually run the car since the changes - she is still on blocks (waiting on tie rod ends) Car has 46K on the engine, compression check a couple of weeks ago was 165 ish all around. Seems powerful. Sounds good, maybe a little valve noise - heard worse. What is the cause? Common? what next? Thanks SB

DO NOT CALL REGISTRY...finally in effect in Canada!
I registrered immediately and yesterday I got a call at suppertime from some f--king cut rate vacation autodialer and it stayed on the line with an automated message. The woman answered it, hung up and picked up a couple of seconds later - still there talking away. A little freaky. Anyway the buggers have a month of grace befor they get their nuts cut, so I am certain there will be more to come over the next 27 days.
