What Zs are meant to do
Galaxy, Good to see another former Spokanite on board! Did you buy your Z in Spokane? Are you aware that well known Z expert Carl Beck lived here before moving to your area (I beleive he's in Clearwater , too.) Carl worked at monroe street Datsun in 1970 .

Difference between 280z and 280zx
Actually not all ZX's have flat top pistons. The first few years, 79,80, 81 were also dished. also, at it's introduction,Road and Track reported the 79 ZX's weighed fifty pounds less than the 78 Z.

Original Zcar Concept Sketches
If I recall correctly, these are designs for the S30 replacement, which of course eventually became the 280ZX. Still very cool!

Growing old with a classic:
Hey welcome to a fellow Spokanite! What year car do you have? There are at least two other Spokane area folks here. I am thinking of trying to get some folks together on a Saturday Morning this summer to check out our cars. I will make sure I let you know when.

How high does your Z sit with various suspension combos
So Carl, do you have any setups you like on your Z's youd like to share? I know you talked about ordering the Euro springs, do you have any other more performance oriented setups on your cars?

How high does your Z sit with various suspension combos
Thanks Mike. In an effort to keep this thread going (I hope it will be useful as a comparison for folks wanting to update their suspensions or compare differnt types) I have 24 and half inches from ground to top of my rear whell wells, 25 and half in the front. I have yellow springs, could be Suspension Techniques or even old Interpart, but rear shocks are worn out. In the onwers manual one P.O. had made a note about installing "Mullholland" struts back in mid 70's, they copuld still be in there. tire size 215-60-14 on old style slotted mags. The height seems ok to me, no real bottoming issues, unless I drive over something real nasty, but again rear shocks are shot. I want to know what other prople think about their setups so I can update mine...

How high does your Z sit with various suspension combos
As suggested by jmortenson, i am asking for general feedback on A How high your car sits with various spring/strut combos and B do you like this setup???? It would be nice to see some measurements made from the ground to the upper wheelwells and the rockers as well.

Good sources for Suspension Techniques springs and Feedback on same
Great idea. I went and measured my setup on the 71. I checked the distance from ground to top of fenderwells. I have yellow old springs. Could be ST, could be interpart. I dont know how old, but thought I should replace them with shocks at the same time. The were 24 and half inches on the back, 25 and half on the front. Heh heh, I guess that front end bias may date back awhile?? Im sure the rear shocks are shot though... Anyway, it would be nice to see some measurements from some other folks to get a better idea how low some setups go.

Good sources for Suspension Techniques springs and Feedback on same
Oh really? Boy there is sure are alot of varied opinions on the spring shock setups. Some folks have cars too high (as you menioned seems to be combo of new gas shocks and older spring designs , Like euros) or way too low, like some of the tockico setups. The Arizona springs sounded good, but they seemd to be the stiffest rating i thought the ST's might be a bit milder ???

Good sources for Suspension Techniques springs and Feedback on same
I am getting closer to finally updating my sagging springs and worn out shocks. This site has provided enough info that I think the ST springs are what I want. Anyone else want to give me some feedback on how they like ST's? Im going to either use Tockco HP's or illuminas depending on how mcuh money I can come up with, this is for the 71, which I only drive weekends on pretty smooth country roads. What is a good source for these springs?

OT-Carl Stahlnecker Died June 16th
This is certainly some sad news. I was disapointed when Carl stopped contributing to our club as well. He was very helpful to me with a few private emails on how to fix some stuff on my car. Pretty cool for a guy I barely even knew. God Bless his soul.

Does Tockico make non progressive springs??
Interesting points. I have heard from others the Tockicos were progressives on the front. Funny I can find the tockico shock website with details, but nothing about springs on the site..

Does Tockico make non progressive springs??
OK well one of our members has posted his tockicos on ebay, and they dont appear to be progressives, or do they??? http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/TOKICO-RED-HP-SPRINGS-DATSUN-240Z_W0QQcmdZViewItemQQcategoryZ33582QQihZ019QQitemZ8076848008QQrdZ1QQsspagenameZWDVW

Running rich after a cooldown.
FYI, in my experince the cold start valve isnt super crucial. I took the connector off of mine when it started to leak at the connection. Ive never had a problem with it not being able to start, and I live in an area where it does get pretty cold. You could try just disconnecting the cold start and see if that solves the problem.

problem with rattliing shift knob
The 280 ZX OEM knob isn't wood.
-
problem with rattliing shift knob
Is it a stock shift knob? I had the same problem with an aftermarket walnut shift knob, and someone in the club mentioned this could be the problem. I reinstalled the original knob and the noise went away.

Does Tockico make non progressive springs??
Everyone has said the front tockico springs for 240-Z's are progressive. Look at the springs on this ebay listing. They dont really look progressive. Are they??? http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/TOKICO-HP-SHOCKS-SPRINGS-NISSAN-240Z-70-74_W0QQcmdZViewItemQQcategoryZ33590QQihZ019QQitemZ8075699988

240z 280z differences in actual shells
Hey I am curious about a simlar issue. A guy in the woods across from me has what looks to be a black 78 Z just sitting in the yard. I was wondering what parts I could scavenge for the 71 or even the 79. I was thinking the front fenders could be useful for the 71.And maybe some of the F.I. parts for the 79.

You guys have too much money.

Tokico HP - Z is two inches taller
Z sait, so what type of springs are you running??
-
Tokico HP - Z is two inches taller
So the higher the spring rate the more likelyhood your car will sit higher? In other words the more performance oriented springs , the higher it could sit? I guess the tradeoff would be your car should handle better even if it sits a bit higher? I know my car has "old" lowering springs (yellow ones, could be interpart) but they have probably sagged quite a bit. It does sit real low. Bu the struts are shot as well. So I guess if I get a new strut spring combo, my handling should improve regardless.

Tokico HP - Z is two inches taller
So Marty, whcih springs are on the track car? I was thinking of getting Suspension Techniquies and the Tockico HP's but I dont want my car to ride higher! I will go with illuminas if thats the case. I hope they are matched to ST springs.
