What should i replace while the engine is out?
I'm a little confused about the mechanical vs electrical fuel pump issue. Where does the electric fuel pump ChrisA mentions mount? Does it mount in the same spot as the mechanical pump on teh L24? I assume the L28 i have includes a fuel pressure regulator, where does it go in the L28 w/carb setup? of course, I'm at work when i think of these questions, so i can't look at the engine until tonight. thanks for any clarification on this issue. -Ty

What should i replace while the engine is out?
Thanks for the help and the encouragement. and i think 240ZX is probably right in that i should concentrate on getting married first, then worry about making the engine right. however, i would prefer to only have to pull the engine once, so if there are some essential items that can only be done with the engine out, i'd like to do it now. This is the first engine swap i've done, thus, i am very inexperienced with engine work. I've heard that i should replace the engine mount rubber, is this necessary? ChrisA: I have an N47 head. not sure if it has the fuel pump holes or not. the oil pan gasket does need to be replaced. where would i get a Fel-Pro kit, and what does it contain? i'm hoping to aviod calling MSA and having them sell me stuff i don't really need. As usual, the budget for this project is small and pretty much exhausted. Bambikilller, good call on cleaning the engine bay. Thanks, Ty

What should i replace while the engine is out?
Hi all, i apologize for not doing much searching before posting, but i'm pretty busy right now and under somewhat of a time constraint. I'm recently engaged and busy doing wedding stuff which leaves little time for surfing the web and working on cars. My situation is that my L24 engine spun a bearing, and i've picked up a running L28. My desire is to put the carbs from the L24 onto the L28. I've read a few threads about FI vs carbs, and i've decided i like su carbs for sentimental reasons. Question #1: What should be replaced while the engine is out? I'm thinking that anything made of rubber should be replaced, but that may get expensive and perhaps time consuming. what is your experience/advice on durability of the rubber pieces/hoses? Are there any other parts of the engine that should be new? I also have the tranny out, so what is typically replaced there? Question #2: is putting su carbs onto an FI L28 a straight forward procedure? what pitfalls should i be aware of? Thanks, Ty

I did it, bought the 350
mvsracf, i've been busy spending my online time learning about rebuilding engines and haven't had time to post to this thread. i just want to say, congrats on the new car. i think i saw both of your z's at the Blackhawk show. while i'm a huge fan of the 350Z, your 280ZX was definitely more impressive of the two. But that's just my opinion. -Ty

engine diagnosis advice
Thanks again. My basic question has been answered, which is that i'll just pull the engine rather than try to examine it by removing the oil pan. i don't recall what difference teh clutch made. that would have been good to find out though. if i started it up now, could i determine if there was any other driveline damage? Or would it have to be driven to figure that out? -Ty

engine diagnosis advice
thanks Kmack. i guess i should elaborate on the background. the last time i drove the car, i was doing a bit of spirited driving getting onto the freeway, probably took the rpms upto 6k, maybe higher because the tach doesnt work very well over 4k, but anyway, about a mile down the road i notice a tapping sound under acceleration. the noise wasn't audible without giving it gas. I decided to pull off the freeway. as i slowed down, i gave it some more gas to hear the sound without so much background road noise, and the sound became louder and i could begin to feel vibrations in the shifter. so when i tried to gently accelerate from the off ramp to the nearest safe place, the sound was extremely loud, with extreme vibration coming through the shifter (then into my arm and then heart ) and i could guess that it was pretty serious. Some guy who had heard the noise said that it sounded like a broken rod. That was about a month ago. Since then i've turned the engine over (after disconnecting the coil) and i could only hear a slight tapping. of course the engine was only doing a few rpm, instead of a few thousand... So, i think i might as well pull the engine now that i know that oil pan removal is just for replacing the gasket. Thanks kmack!

engine diagnosis advice
Hi all, Since this site is full of knowledgeable (and nice) people i would love to get some advice. Here is my situation: The engine of my 71 240 is broken and/or breaking. it was making an extremely loud metal-on-metal tapping/knocking sound. I am a newbie to car engines, so this is my first experience in trying to diagnose a problem. Anyway, i managed to pull the valve cover off and everything appeared normal. i discussed the situation with some friends and they suggested removing the oil pan and looking up into the block for the problem. So, my question(s) is/are: 1. Will looking up into the block provide enough info to diagnose the problem? I suspect that it could, but not necessarily. 2. So, would it be wiser to just pull the engine first, since there is a high probability that the engine will need to be repaired/replaced anyway? If it is recommended to just pull the oil pan, i've searched this site and seen that you'd have to raise the engine off the mounts. i spent some time last night trying to figure out how to do just that, and it seemed like it would take nearly as much work as pulling the whole engine. 3. What would be the recommended procedure for lifting the engine off its mounts? do all the hoses and wires need to be disconnected? where is the best place to put the jack to lift the engine? Thanks for any advice. Again, i am a novice so i may have missed something obvious or made poor assumptions. Thanks, Ty

Glove box replacement?
Hey Mike, Well done with the glove box! i don't have the spare cash now for a glove box, but would be interested in one in the future. Are you going to be saving the templates for future production? Maybe post a pdf version of the template to the website? If you want to sell the template at a later date that would be cool too. Thanks for all your effort and contribution to the Z community! -Ty

240Z in Sunset Orange (350Z Colour)
So is that the 350Z engine under the hood? i'm not so good at identifying engines by sight. Is there any write up about the conversion process (maybe over at HybridZ)? Thanks, Ty

I am so pissed off....
Threefittyzee, my condolences about the accident. I had a similar experience. About 2 weeks after my dad and i purchased our 240, i was rear ended at a stop light. Luckily no one was hurt and the damage was minimal; a bent bumper bar and a dented rear panel. Even with the minor damage, i was still pissed it happened and frustrated that my new toy was damaged. However, i realized that the car is just a car (even if it is a Z) and that God takes away just as readily as he gives. Currently, I'm much more appreciative of my Z now that i understand how lucky i am to have it. I hope your situation works out for the best, with you being able to repair your z and have it look good, too. -Ty

It's time to choose...
Does anyone know if the new "lemans sunset" color on the '04 350Z the same as the orange on the '03 350Z? the lemans seems a bit lighter to me. Anyway, my vote would be for the lemans sunset or its potentially darker predecessor of the 2003 350Z. -Ty

Insulation from sound/weather
Majik, Have you done a search on this site? i recall a lot of discussion about it a while back. I also seem to recall that there were many different materials being used for insulation/sound deadening. here is one thread i've found http://www.classiczcars.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=9742&highlight=sound+deadener good luck, Ty
