A tale about a whale - 50th Anniversary, remastered video
The old bulldozer is pretty cool. You'd think a Cadillac would be a place of safety.

Future of driving a "classic" car
DC8 is saying that he doesn't believe this. And he has a point. How do we know what to believe? But, that is also the tool that the current administration is trying to use to stay in power. Making everything seem unbelievable until people just give up and listen to the guy that says he'll take care of everything. In the end people just have to do their own homework, and decide what to believe. Which is really supposed to be the core of a democracy, the sum of the individual views and decisions. Nobody should be believing something just because they saw it on the internet or TV channel. Mass media has always been about manipulating people, to buy the goods that they're selling through advertising.

Future of driving a "classic" car
Here's some humor, regarding the extremes of the labels. Who in society is the most ultra conservative, taking absolutely no help from government? A homeless person. They should be role models, something to aspire to. And, Elon Musk is the ultimate troll. He got the richest most conservative conservatives to drive electric cars (actually I can't prove this I just assumed it. But that's how things are done these days, although I am 99% sure that Elon Musk is an ultra conservative. So maybe he's actually trolling the "progressives" and making money from them). How can that be? And now he's selling solar panels. Why? Just burn the natural gas. There's enough to last years. https://www.tesla.com/

Future of driving a "classic" car
I don't think that old labels even work anymore. The media uses the names to stir things up and keep viewers entertained but they don't really stand for anything specific. They're just names that people use to insult other people. As soon as you see the names come up you know that the conversation is dying.

Future of driving a "classic" car
I agree. Somewhere between "I don't see anything, my beach looks the same" and "100 years from now" we'll be underwater, there's probably a sweet spot. Al Gore is a politician, not a scientist.

Future of driving a "classic" car
Science made the DC-8 possible. Science is about collecting data and applying rational thought to what it shows. At the higher levels you just have to trust the scientists and the institution of science. Like you trusted the guys that built your plane. The engineers got their numbers from science. The chemists made the fuel based on science. The engine materials were developed using science. I think that the basic problem most people have with the "global warming" issue is "why should I worry about what's going to happen 40 years from now? I'll be dead". It seems like the deniers are older and the worriers are younger. Which makes sense, from a selfish perspective. The older people don't have to care, because they'll be dead, and the younger people do, because they inherit the mess. So, just like wearing a face covering in public so you don't get COVID and be a burden on society in the hospital, or pass it along so that someone else's life is affected, it's really about letting other people live a life worth living. In the short-term or the long-term.

Pretty sure that Hung Vu will sell to anybody. If you can figure out how to reach him. Doesn't seem to have a web site. http://vintagedashes.blogspot.com/ https://www.facebook.com/pages/category/Automotive--Aircraft---Boat/Vintage-Dashes-1868865246759772/ https://www.classiczcars.com/forums/topic/61331-vintage-dashes-280z/

COVID-19
Another new web tool for assessing risk. Haven't had a chance to dig in to it but the concept seems interesting. Except that in the big scheme of things it might lead to the unintended consequence of driving people to the areas that are/were low-risk. Possibly carrying virus to the uncontaminated areas. Who knows. Probably also gives a false sense of security. Party until the risk level rises. https://covid19risk.biosci.gatech.edu/

I was serious, I thought it was about right. An old refurb'ed 1978 280Z, mid 30's price. Seems right. I still think that other guy should have taken the $111,000 for the 240Z. And, no offense, or sarcasm, I'm glad you don't work for me too. I sense trouble... 😦

$35,350 for a 119,000(?) mile 78 280Z isn't bad. https://bringatrailer.com/listing/1978-datsun-280z-78/

280ZX https://bringatrailer.com/listing/1979-datsun-fairlady-280z/ Is this correct? The 280ZX in Japan was called a 280Z?

The 78 is ending in a short while. Up to $22,780. Anybody know who ZIndustries is? Are they an established business or did they just make up a name to sell a Z for this auction? Sounds like a salesman..."I can assure you", "this is the best color combination of all", yada yada yada. https://bringatrailer.com/listing/1978-datsun-280z-78/

saturday night music thread
I convinced a bunch of drunk college students at a spring break beach hotel that my buddy was Randy Travis. I did it because he looked like Randy Travis and would break out a guitar at parties and try to get people to do sing-alongs. I hated that. "That's Randy Travis. Go say hi." Drunk people are gullible.

Don't buy this from Z Car Depot
You can always buy by brand. Gates hose seems to address all of the concerns. Not "period correct" looking of course. Most of the auto parts stores have Gates. It even has a name, Barricade. https://www.gates.com/us/en/fluid-power/engine-hose/fuel-line-hose.p.4219-000000-000002.html

Parts for Sale: Nissan 5-speed trans
A shot of the drain plug magnet would be telling. It should have stuff on it. If it's clean that means somebody removed the signs of condition. I bought a mystery 5 speed for $50 from a shady guy, by the external signs from an 82-83 280ZX. I knew that, worst case, I'd have the front case for a 71C swap and some other odd parts, like the speedo drive and front cover and odd spare pieces. I hooked it up to my spare engine that I had available to run in the garage, filled it with old gear oil I had saved and ran it through the gears on a running engine. It started grinding and crunching right away and the gear oil was aluminum colored when it came out. It was destroyed inside, somebody had obviously got angry with it, probably from a bad slave cylinder on the clutch. Clutch forks, bearings, synchro parts everywhere. I did use the front case on a 300ZX 5 speed that I picked up for $20 from a kid whose mother told him he had to get the 5 speed off the front porch, from his wrecked 300ZX. Win some, lose some. Thank you for the opportunity to tell a random story.

Actually it's not. That Advertising site is not intuitive as far as getting to the pictures. For me anyway. I think it's just a 280ZX 71B transmission.

Just remembered that the shifter is completely different on the 71C. Of course, that area is covered in @WayneFC 's picture. 71B 71C
