  1. Hi guys, I need some opinions. Does the type of paint finish effect the value of an early 240z? I have a Sept 1970 240z in extremely original condition but have finally decided to repaint it (in the original 904 white) because: - In the past someone poorly resprayed the doors and fenders directly over original finish and it is cracking. - The rest is original but there a stone chips everywhere - some small dints noticeable in door and fender - Rust spots developing around the rocker panel and valance The paint shop asked if I wanted it to be a 'solid' finish like the original or apply a 'clearcoat' for better depth and durability. This means it will be the same colour but not precisely like the original finish. I am liking the idea of clearcoat but does this have an effect on the value of the car if I choose to sell it as an "original 240z"? I also need advice on the finish to the underside of the fenders and wheel hub areas? It appeared to be painted white but had a black coat on it that is slowly disappearing. I was thinking of finishing in a similar colour as the rear finisher and grille (Nissan/Datsun Grey) but not sure what is the expected look in this area? (Note there are no fender supports welded on the unibody on this car like I have seen in other threads)
  2. Clever. I almost threw mine out because of this. I will PM my list.
  3. In addition. Is there a way of verifying that fender mirrors are genuine Nissan and not simply fakes?
  4. Hi guys. I have some Nissan boxes with 96301-N3400 and 96302-N3400 and am wanting to know what was in them. They were mirrors but which type? Also I need to kmow what the part No is for the chrome bullet type fender mirrors used on the Datsun's. Thanks
  5. Yep. They moved the holes closer to the middle on later models to get better access to the screws because the door gets in the way. I noticed this last year when updating the sills and had to drill new holes.

I am not sure they do but 240K's should be accepted IMO. They organise track days etc so would be good to see these cars do their thing.
  7. Wish we had Z's selling for that amount here. Nice find and good luck with the work.

Attached are some pictures of my installed 1970 (no holes) splashpan with the original factory finish as it was bought from the dealer in Australia. I sits hardup to radiator support. I have recently replaced the splashpan fixings but these were painted over black as well for those who care.

I have three of these knobs. They came with the Aussie cars which all had 5 speeds. You may want to ask around here. I bought the last one for $15. Happy to post detailed pics if wanted.
  11. Hmmm... I see from the pics they changed the seatbelts on the australian cars when they were imported. That is why these clips are useless holding our seatbelt clasps.

Actually it seems the splash pan was painted by the factory after it was installed. There is black paint from behind the front grille, down the rails, on the sway bar, one engine mount etc. Looks like a real rush job. The pic shows the chassis rail after the pan was removed.
  13. 5 speed is not rare in an Australian 240z. All zeds came with 5 speed as standard. In fact, I have never seen a 4 speed here nor probably ever will since no one wants them.

My 240z came with the splashguard and is black both sides when bought back in 1970. In fact you could see the rough brush strokes under where they did it in the factory by hand similar to the black out area behind the grille. This car was sold in Australia. I have since sanded and repainted the splashguard but there are some pics somewhere in the archives.
  15. There was no code available on record here in Australia - I asked around. So when restoring my engine, I took the alternator bracket down to a place that supplied the panel beaters paint. We then spent an hour out back mixing the colour I needed to get what appeared to be an exact match. They then put it into spray cans and I painted the necessary parts. They kept the mix on record so now I can go get the paint anytime. Did the same for the orange on the air cleaner. I was quite particular and you cannot tell the difference.
  16. Nice if this is possible, especially if they replicate the early tip. It is certainly an area that needs filling. Not sure if anyone is prepared to part with these if they have a good one lying around. They should be able to replicate from a broken one if they get both pieces. 6 months seems along time as well.

My advice is to drive the car for awhile because it will grow on you. I do like white and was lucky enough to buy one in that colour. However I had orange on the previous 240Z and grew to like that just as much. Seeing a different colour in the engine bay, under carpets etc to the external body colour is never a good look in my opinion. I feel it does devalue the car a little and if I had a choice between two similar cars I would choose the one which still has the original colour. However if you completely strip it and do a ground up rebuild then that is another story.
  18. Need a thread on how to find rare parts. You obviously have a skill many are developing. Nice work

I will post separate threads over the coming weeks with pictorial details including: - routing of cables with associated hooks and clasps used to hold them - carpets. This car has the original set including the jute in very good condition. - small things that matter for the interior - small things that matter for the engine bay - seatbelt detail. Probably only for the Aussie members since they are different to the US fit out - Body work including the bonnet etc Decals on our cars in Australia are less extensive.

Yeah the paint is original but I believe the fenders have been resprayed at some stage. I can flake it off to see the original paint under. There is some rust looming around the sills but mostly it is on the surface around the car (perhaps a little more where I can't see it). When I pulled off the internal quarter panel to do the antenna I noticed surface rust near the taillight. Next stage I think will involve a refurb of the body and brakes but I need a rest for the moment - too many late nights.

Wives, you gotta love them. I also had mine help with the fan and connecting the starter motor. She now loves this car.

Ok will do. In the meantime, here is a sample of some other cars from the day. (Thanks by the way for your help with the release bearing).

Thanks Blue, Any particular pics you want to see? Most of the ones I have are of the crappy condition during the three week refurb. I also had the radiator stripped and cleaned. Still original though. I tried out this engine swap but it ran rough after an hour so decided to use the original engine. (Actually my wife helped with cleaning the engine bay) Note the hand held lamp on the fender. I did all the work at night after work.

Hi Guys, I bought this car off the first owner back in 2007 and let it sit under the house until last month. I went to start it and found a healthy rats nest sitting on the manifold. He had also decided to snack on my leads and hoses. I cleaned it out and decided that it would be good to take it to the Motorfest 2012 which was just over three weeks away. Since the car was stuck in the garage (it wan't running) I decided to try and become a newbie mechanic and do as much as I could myself. I want the car to be as orginal as possible. I borrowed the tools from a mate because an adjustable wrench only does so much and used the manuals to help explain everything to me. I used photos to make sure I remembered where everything went and worked by handheld light. It is all I had at the time. In the three weeks leading up to the show: - Took the carbies to have a refurbishment, clean and adjustment. - Stripped out the engine bay and hired a hoist to remove the engine. - Delivered the engine off to get a stock rebuild (Mainly rings and bearings). I matched the Nissan blue on the block to the alternator arm. - Redyed the original rear deck carpet. - Painted air cleaner, fan and splashpan to original specs. - Repaired the original antenna buy putting in a new mast. - Refurbished the alternator, manifold, distributor and anything else that could be ripped off the engine. - Reconnected the muffler assembly from engine to tip. - reconnected the engine and clutch and connected everything back together. - Replaced the original steel rims with a set of polished Shelby 500's from the early 70's. I am old school. - Replace tyres from 180/175 R14 to 215/60 R14 to keep the same rolling diamter and stock ride height. - Replaced any busted or aging hoses. - Bunch of other minor stuff to boring to mention. - General clean and polish managed to get her going on the day before the event. Thanks to all the members and forums for helping me with those anwsers that just don't come in a manual. Enjoy the images:
