What would you take...
Watching Bull Run today, one car split a transmission hose, and it gives me the idea to include on the list one or two ( as appropriate) barbed hose couplers, of the type to fit fuel lines or trans hoses. 3/16 or 5/16" ( 6 or 8mm)? Don't forget to include already on your list a few hose clamps of different sizes ( IMO, 1 or 2 radiator hose clamps, and 2 or 3 fuel line clamps.) Of course, if you're travelling in a group, you can divide the parts up. thx

If you scroll down to the comments below the checklist area, you'll see that he refers to the car as a "1978" 280ZX" ?

Bull Run rally
For you northwest U.S. property owners, this is where the Bull Run rally has been to so far ( 4/17) Whitefish, MT Athol, ID Seattle, WA Portland,OR Winchester Bay, OR Redding, CA Vallejo, CA Alameda,CA Reno,NV winnemucca,NV Elko, NV Wendover, UT Salt Lake City, UT Anybody have an idea of how you could map that entire route, and maybe post a picture of the map? BTW- the Nissan 240SX was eliminated on the first day. :hurt: 6 more legs to go (6 shows/weeks) SPIKE TV, 10pm ET, Tuesdays thx

my damn lock.
When I got my 280Z, the dor locks were iffy, and the hatch lock was barely working, so I replaced it with one from an MGA. It's the same deal, but has a thumb pull on it. It uses a different key tho. I opened the hatch to get to the door lock, until I got the door locks fixed.

That's the kind of stuff I was eferring to. It has the leak sealer and it will inflate your tires ( some.) I've seen some less expensive ones in the WalMart that had slime-type stuff in it. It's much less expensive than the $75 oem can of air you can get at the dealer. I already had that on my list of stuff. BTW, to lessen the amount of stuffin each car, and still have everything on the list, I would suggest that you divide up the list of stuff, and everybody carry a portion of the more common things. Some people will need to take their own specialized parts ( like radiator hoses & fan belts) and I think everyone should carry some things, like 1gal. of water, snacks, first aid kit.) thx

my damn lock.
Ther eare many kinds of Telon-bearing oils, greases and powders. The originals were called Triflow (Teflon-oil) and TriFlon (a dry powder.). I got a tub of Teflon-bearing grease from the autoparts store called OneGrease, from the Slick-50 people. Usesparingly ( get yourself some little cheap paintbrushes.) While you have your doorpanels off, don't forget to check the keylock itself. Try not to get grease on the glass. thx.

What would you take...
That'a why I keep the list of stuff I have short enough so it will all fit into a small tub or sak. The Z only goes for a long drive ( more than 100miles) only about once a year or less, so I can make sure it's all working, safe, and reliable. thx

Beware of George G. Robbins (aka: reddat)!!!
Some guys will sell Z parts to other Z people for free, as a service to the community or just to clean out the garage, but there really is no reason not to make a (few) bux on whatever you have. It's the 'American way. ' thx

Do you have any info ( like a link) to the H4s you use? I'd be interested in simplifying my headlamps. PM if you want. thx

Beware of George G. Robbins (aka: reddat)!!!
I make a bookmark for that web page. I bought a couple things from reddat, but they were cheap things, with no problems.

GnoseZ- Would you really change out a U-joint or a headlamp on the road?

Windsjield fogging??
There's an idea- Make sure the cables are working correctly. If the fresh air door won't close when the defogger is on, you'll be blowing water vapor onto the windsreen.

this idea was discussed before: Aug 2006 And there's another one ealier last year, but I couldn't find it. IMO, you're on your own as far as rachets, sockets, and spanners go; that's a topic in itself. You can fill up your car with tools & spares, and even engine parts! But there are certain things to carry that can take care of the more common problems. Are you watching BULL RUN? The new TransAm broke a trans hose & the guy fixed it with a hose clamp right there on the side to finish the day! You're more likely to get a flat or see a stranded motorist than need to change the alternator or water pump on the road. that's what your AutoClub card should be used for. Do your best to make sure the major mechanicals are up to the trip before you leave, and you won't have to drink your spare water while you wait for the towtruck. thx

What would you take...
So far, you have about the whole list of stuff that I developed last year. The gallon of water is essential- a gallon juice jug (NOT a milk jug) fits behind the seat, and if you freeze it overnight, you'll have ice cold water to drink all day, or if you meet a girl with radiator trouble velcro bits or string on the jug & cap so you don't loose it. :paranoid: I found a plastic toy-tub that fits in front of the passenger seat on my 280Z. I put strips of velcro on the lid to hold things (spare FRS radio, batteries, etc.) so they don't slide around, and a 3 or 4 inch hole in the middle to shove things through (loose stuff, phone numbers... extra map(s) cheap film or digital camera Tow strap? rain gear/poncho (a multi-use item) trash bag(s)- kitchen size, with drawstring. snacks like Pop-Tarts, crackers or whatever is in a small pack. Sorry, my list is on the Palm right now. You can PM me for my whole list thx

Windsjield fogging??
Is there any other moisture in the car when it's raining? Any leaks you 're not aware of? Having any standing water (like having wet carpets or something) saturates the air with water vapor, and the defogger won't work well.

Keep the defroster grid?
Do you think that defroster kit would work with the stock Z wiring? There's no timer on a Z, and the voltage to the grid might be a little less than 12V (11.7V), so it's hard to tell from the sescription. There was little information on power, except it said 8 - 16A @ 12V. It seems like a better product than the last one I found. thx

Keep the defroster grid?
It was in the Hot Deals or New Stuff section, but not any more. Give a call Monday. They might still have them. thx
-
Keep the defroster grid?
I didn't think that defroster grid lines could drust. They look like copper strips coated with some ceramic paint stuff. Even then, they are so thin, the tinting should stick. What if you painted the lines with something to promote the tinting to stick well?

Temporary Fix for Radiator Leak
Yeah, that's the one I saw- but just the end part. They used a small ice pick to make a small hole.
-
Keep the defroster grid?
Maybe the tinter guy wanted to remove the grid wires so they don't pull off when the tint comes off ( if ever) or maybe he thinks the heat (what heat?) might melt the tinting and look funny. I was able to get almost all the tinting off my window, but some of it is still sticking on the grid wires. Pulling it off bit by bit is crazy, and the local tinter guy said I should just crape EVERYTHING off the glass. Any ideas? Ammonia & a cold/dark garage?

Temporary Fix for Radiator Leak
Yeah, you need about 1/2 a shaker of the black peper. They also suggested bubblegum and J.B. Weld, but you could just use some radiator stop-leak. The idea was from some people out camping, and they had extra eggs. Since eggs are darn tough suckers when WAY over-cooked, it ought to work well on smallish holes, but I wonder if all the heat, water, and pressure would shoot the plug out after a while. Hopefully, you can get to a repair place before then. Mythbusters did a whole show on cars today, but I only caught the last minutes, when they tried to put a penny into the intake manifold of a trashy V-8 engine. The penny bounced around and you could hear it knocking, but the engine didn't suddenly sieze up, like the one myth said. they also tried bleach in the oil. It did smoke like crazy, and the engine started to run rough after a while, and finally stall. thx

Keep the defroster grid?
ZSpecialties has a neato fan thing that plugs into the defroster wiring, and they say it works reat. You might want to look into that. If you look enough, you can still get aftermarket defroster griid things that you stick onto the window. It doesn't look as pretty as the oem one, but I had one before and they work just as well. thx
