R180 3.90 Rear End
Hey Dhayes, I see from your tag line that you are running PU bushings with Tokicko shocks. Are those the non-adjustables? What springs are you using? How is the ride quality? I am thinking about going to PU's, but I am concerned withmaking the ride harsh. I have the Tokicko non-adj and am thinking about going with the Stage 1 Euro Springs. Thanks, Marty

Price check/ reference request
$4800 for a 34K car! IF the condition is what the mileage would suggest, thhe car should have been like new. That would have been a hell of a deal! I saw one 36K car recently selling for $13K. I don't really thing anyone into Z's would really pay that, but, they say a sucker is born every minute. Enjoy the hunt. Marty

Price check/ reference request
Looks like you are in Michigan and this car is in Texas. this would suggest that you are willing to travel to get a car. That's the right attitude!! I found mine 3 1/2 years ago by looking on this website: http://www.collectorcartraderonline.com/ It was a '70, with 69K original miles, no rust, with a very nice new paint job, but needed some interior work for $4,800. Keep looking and take your time. Wait for a truly great car at a reasonable price. They are out there! This web site has 82 240Z's listed right now. Happy hunting! Marty

A horrible weekend for me
Grantman, Just remember, you don't have to take the first offer that the Insurance Co. gives you. It is their job to pay you the least amount possible. If they low ball you, you can negotiate. When my Z burned up, they offered me $1,900, which was the blue book value back then. After 7 yrs of restoration, I had about $10K into the car, and I had pictures and loads of receipts to prove it. Show them ads in Hemmnings for comparable cars. In my case, I ended up with $6,900, which I figured would have been the most I could have gotten by trying to sell the car. Just be firm, but nice. If they think you are just a jerk trying to get rich from the accident, they won't want to help you. Good luck! Marty

Help me build a new exhaust system :)
The muffler shop sort of cut the Y pipe in half, creating a larger opening and them bent and welded the 2 1/4 pipe to fit. A good muffler shop will figure it out. As far as the flow goes, I have heard that the 240 monifold actually does flow pretty well. the larger pipes will help it breath easier/

Help me build a new exhaust system :)
Kmack, The turbo muffler goes at the tail end of the car. Skip the resonator in the middle, you don't really need it. I was very picky about how the sound was. I didn't want the car to be loud. The shop convinced my to go without the resonator and even offfered to add one in if I didn't like the sound. It you go with a good quality, thick gauge 2 1/4" system, it will lessen the boominess you get witha 2 1/2" piped system. With this setup, the car is nice and quiete, but has a nice growl when you tromp the gas. Marty

A horrible weekend for me
Sorry to hear and see your loss. I know how you feel. My 1st 240Z went up in a blaze of glory when the center weber carb stuck open and poured gas on the hot header. This was after spending 7 years restoring it to near concourse condition. They only thing that kept mne from really getting bummed out was that I walked away unharmed. Eventially I got another 240 and I am enjoying this one even more. There are a lot of Z's out there. Glad to see you could walk away from that one. Marty

Help me build a new exhaust system :)
The pipes from the manifold all come together at one point. On mine, the sort of cut off part of that collector, flattened out the tube and welded it on there. Marty

Help me build a new exhaust system :)
The "pre-muffler" is a resonator. Its function it to quiet the car down further. I did not use one and don't miss it. There is a brand of muffler that is very popular, I think it is called a Dynomax. Stay away from that one, as I heard it is really loud. Talk to the guy at the muffler shop and explain what you want. They usually will have a couple of choices. I wish I could remember the brand I bought, but that was over 3 years ago. Good luck! Marty

Help me build a new exhaust system :)
To get any significant additional HP, you would need to stick an L28 block in there, with triple carbs and a high lift cam. Take me advice, you will love the sound.

Help me build a new exhaust system :)
I believe this car is pretty stock right? Unless you have real sleeper here with a monster motor under the hood, forget about the headers and exotic pipes. It won't do much with a stock engine. A header will only net you 1-3HP, and will be prone to exhaust leaks, rust and make the car louder. 2 1/2 inch pipes tend to be loud and create a nasty booming sound under the car @ 2500RPM. I suggest you go to a good muffler shop and have them custom bend you one with 2 1/4 inch pipes, teminated with a nice turbo muffler at the back. Thats what I did. It has a real nice growl, without being obnoxiously loud. It only cost me $126.00 complete. Good luck! Marty

But did you use hi-gloss on the wood part too? Marty

Steering Wheel - Just finished restoring(Pic)
I am in the middle of restoring my wheel using the same process. I have the paint stripped off the spokes and in primer. Did you use a semi-gloss of a high gloss clear coat on the rim? Thanks, Marty

looking for a 1970 Z to restore
Sorry to hear about that. I hate to hear that another Z hit the dust, especially a '70. I don't have a '70 to sell, but I do have one that I am working on. If you are interested in selling some of those NOS parts, shoot me a list of what you have and prices to: marty.rogan@motorola.com Thanks, Marty

Original 72
Very nice looking Z!!! Isn't that the one that was bought from Ebay? It would take alot of guts to buy something sight unseen. I want to clime all over, under and drive it before I would buy a car. Marty

Engine Stands
Mike, I had my engine out last spring. Tried to mount the engine at the trans, but it wanted to tip over, being nose heavy. I removed the alternator and its bracket, and I believe the bolt that holds the engine pull hook and bolted the stand right to the engine block, with no extra plates or anything. Just make sure you get a 4 point stand (for stability) and one that has adjustable arms for mounting. Good luck! Marty

1977 "black pearl" on ebay
Didn't the Black Pearl edition have red accent stripes on the hood? Also, that edition came out in 1978!!! I don't I could ever feel comfortable buying a car off Ebay, without being able to see it first. Marty

My 1970
Are you talking about the Anti-backfire valve? That came with the Z Therapy set-up as well. I have put about 1,000 miles on them and am happy withthem so far.
-
My 1970
I am not sure what you mean by vaccuum canisters on the intake. I bought the whole Z Therapy set up. Intake manifold, carbs, linkages and new Nissan carb insulators. I did find a couple of products that do a great job of cleaning of old grease and grime though. Goop Hand cleaner with a Scotch Brite pad works great. TSP is a strong cleaner. And Castrol makes a cleaner that is really powerful on grease. Used that to clean the engine bay. Marty

My 1970
No the original did not look that good! The original color was Dark Blue metalic 903. It was not that nice. The PO painted the exterior before I got it. As I was told, it is Ford, Midnight Blue, 2 basecoats, with 3 coats of clear. I like it way better than the original color. About yours, you should be fine switching from one original color to another, as long as you do a thorough job of changing it everywhere. That is if you are going the originality route. I had a '73 before, that I mildly customized. It was originally that pukey lime yellow, which I coudn't stand. I repainted it Guards Red (Porche), with Golld pearl in the clear coat. That car was drop dead beautiful!!! So, If you like red, go for it!! Just be prepared to be noticed by the cops too.
