Restored vs NOS Dash

hls30.com

Here is a picture of a restored dash(DashrestorationsUSA) and a NOS dash. They are different styles to begin with.

The grain and color are different. The Restored dash is covered in less heavily embossed material, and has a much tighter grain, as well as a slightly different color. The circled areas point out where there are visible flaws in the restoration(dust/grit/old covering under the new covering material) The flaws, though small, and not very noticeable when the dash is installed are still there.

Hey Will, any chance of some close-ups of the flaws and the grain? It's hard to tell the difference in colour... could you describe it?

The flaws are simply grit and/or dust that was not cleaned off the dash before it was recovered. I will see if I can get pictures to show.

The grain on the NOS dash is more "Pebbled" in appearance, the Restored dash is much smoother with a much less deeply embossed and smaller grain-very difficult to photograph for a layman, thatn to see in person.

The NOS dash seems to be a little more "gray" than the restored dash.

I will try again with photos...

Sooo.......

Will, is the cost of restoring one better than finding an NOS or uncracked original? If the grain is wrong and the color is wrong, for me that would be disappointing. Where are you going from here?

Oh, and thanks a TON for posting those pics. I tried several times to contact those folks with no luck. Your pics answered all my questions. Some macro mode closeup comparisons would be helpful, though.

Again thanks,

Steve

I have tried to get some good pictures, but my lack of familiarity with photography seems to be preventing my efforts from being effective-it is all in the lighting, I just don't have the knowledge to work around this problem yet.

Its probably the angle of the shot but compare the tacho and speedometer curves on top from the restored dash with the "NOS" (BTW what does this mean?) the curves on the restored dash looks smaller? I checked the other pic with both dashboard and they too looked different.

NOS new old stock

the curves on the on the restored dash are different-they have a larger radius as they turn in toward the gages(the tighest curve).

The cooresponding curve on the NOS dash actually has a "flat spot" on the curve, giving it the appearance of a larger radius in this photo. If you look at the other one, the larger area is clearly seen in the restored dash.
