My boot came with the little collar also I just put it in front of the rubber boot

Thank you for that addition to this puzzle.  So...it seems as if that collar was installed the same way on both yours and mine.  Perhaps we have a trend going here.  I don't understand the reasoning behind this installation option, but, unless I hear differently from another member, I will likely go with this option!

There is no way to crimp that on the metal collar is too small in my opinion.

Just noticed this thread and went to look at my car. I know I haven't changed this and I doubt the original owner changed it. I think the sleeve goes inside the small end of the boot. When I squeeze the small end it feels to be larger diameter than the rod through the firewall.

That makes sense so that the rubber doesn’t run on the throttle metal rod instead it glides over it. Thank you for the picture
