Posted May 6, 200322 yr comment_36407 I'm almost ready to put the head back on my original engine, but I was wondering what, if any, "form-a-gasket" type stuff I should use while installing the gasket. I'll be using a Fel-pro head gasket. No mods made to engine other than general clean-up and repair. When I pulled it apart, there was a silvery residue on the block and the head, but I don't what it was. Also, the new gasket says to use no sealant, but the old gasket was a fel-pro also and it obviously had something on it. I'm pretty sure this motor was never before taken apart, either. PO before me had the car since '72. Any ideas, suggestions? Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/forums/topic/6028-installing-new-headgasket/ Share on other sites
May 6, 200322 yr comment_36415 Only sealant I have ever used on headgaskets is the Permatex Copper aerosol, can't remember its exact name....It's not really needed, but it shouldn't hurt anything if you do use it...... May 6, 200322 yr comment_36416 In the past I have always used a light film of "spray tack" on the gasket just to hold it in place on the block while I position the head. Other than that I have never used any sort of RTV sealant or form a gasket in addition and I would not recommend it as when the head is tightened the gasket will mold and fill in the slight uneveneness between the head and block and give a nice tight seal. May 6, 200322 yr comment_36417 Felpro? use nothing but the gasket itself (dry install). Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/forums/topic/6028-installing-new-headgasket/#findComment-36417 Share on other sites
May 6, 200322 yr Author comment_36420 Thanks, guys. I'll let you know how it turns it out when I fire up the motor. Hopefully soon! Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/forums/topic/6028-installing-new-headgasket/#findComment-36420 Share on other sites
May 6, 200322 yr comment_36422 good luck!I just rebuilt my L28 and will install it this weekend into my freshly painted chassis. Should know in about 2 weeks if all the work was worth it (or if I simply created a 2.8 liter hand grenade).
