Posted June 7, 20168 yr comment_496462 Hello everyone, I just bought a 1978 280z and love it!!!! Its my first datsun! I have what I believe to be the original radio. The am works fine but the FM is just static. Anyone seen this issue before? Is it fixable? Thanks Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/forums/topic/55590-1978-280z-radio/ Share on other sites
June 7, 20168 yr comment_496470 Going for the obvious first. Have you tried lowering the antenna on FM? Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/forums/topic/55590-1978-280z-radio/#findComment-496470 Share on other sites

October 23, 20168 yr Author comment_505429 In case anyone else has this issue I wanted to provide some more info. I sent the radio off to a repair shop who said the FM was shot and that it could not be fixed. So I started looking for another radio. The radio that came with the car was a Hitachi KMZ-2411z. I could not find another one for less than $1k. Looking through Ebay I found a Hitachi 2501BA for a datsun 810. Turns out that although the model numbers are different this worked perfectly in my car. Did not need to change a thing. Also, it has a 5pin din connector at the back. I used this to plug in my iphone. Works great! Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/forums/topic/55590-1978-280z-radio/#findComment-505429 Share on other sites
October 23, 20168 yr comment_505439 Probably a cold solder joint somewhere on the circuit board and solder needs to be reflowed or a transistor is bad. You can try taking the cover off the radio then poke and prod the circuit board while it's powered up to see if FM comes back.
