is this the correct bracket for the rear hatch strut? it looks like an add-on to me. it a 72 240.

im curious as to why the strut isnt just attached to the part that this bracket is attached to. any ideas?

Its all about geometry - the pivot point / base for the strut has to be away from the hatch frame to kick the hatch up from a closed position. If the base was tucked in close and parallel to the frame, the strut would be pushing back and not up.

Check to make sure you have enough spot welding 'meat' to hold it in place.  The 73's were famous for breaking off, ask me I know.  :(
