Vintage Datsun Jackets

Recommended Posts

There have been other threads with posts about Datsun jackets, but I thought I would start one solely decided to the subject. I have several vintage jackets. Here's one that I got on ebay recently (for less than $18). It says it belonged to someone that was part of the Datsun pace car crew for the 1974 Ontario 500, which I believe is actually the California 500 race held at Ontario Motor Speedway. Other than the embroidery on the front and the patches on the sleeve, it appears to be the same jacket that was given away or sold by dealers in the US. It still has the red quilted liner that many of the jackets are missing.

Here's one from a Canadian Datsun dealer - Brasso. They had dealerships in Calgary and Vancouver I believe. In fact, the S30 pre-production test crew stopped by the Calgary location during their northern cold weather test trip in 1969.

Here is the earlier US Dealer jacket (as modeled by on ebay). These were also sold through Interpart/BRE and the old Interpart catalog says these were designed by Peter Brock. Not sure if that is accurate or not.

This is isn't really a Datsun jacket, but it's Datsun related. Its from the 1971 ARRC. There was a guy wearing one around the Mitty last year that had patches on it from every year he had been there and it didn't look like he had missed any.

Thanks for sharing.

It would be nice if we did have logo'd items that we could purchase and let Mike pickup some extra coins - I know I would buy a logo'd shirt for car show season to support our group.

Nice Collection Mike:

My favorite is still the original BRE Team Jacket - - but I like the Australian Datsun Rally jacket a lot as well.

By the way - at the Datsun Dealerships, the Jackets and Liners were separate items. You could buy one or both. As I recall the jackets themselves were something like $8.95 and if you wanted the liner they were an extra $2.00. Because these were promotional items, I and many of the salesmen at the Dealerships purchased them ourselves and gave them to people that bought cars from us. The Service Managers also gave them to customers that had larger service bills.

I still have my Jacket from the Dealership - - - but it seems a lot smaller now...

FWIW,

Carl B.

Mike,

The Coca Cola windbreaker from the 71 ARRC covered up with patches is mine. Road Atlanta was my second home for many years. I enjoyed rubbing elbows with the BRE racers at the banquet. Brought back a lot of memories.

Here's a European rally team jacket from the early 1980's I believe.

I had one of those (and in fact still do..) in the 90s. my father had gotten it brand new in the 80s when working for a datsun dealer. I bitterly regret that I used the jacket in my early motoring years when working on my car.. it got dirty motor oil stains ALL OVER IT and very worn in all possible ways. Then was neglected in a humid cellar for years and was mold infested. Found there in the later years during a move which was when I realized what stupid a** I had been. Then spent 10 years trying to find one for sale. Until a few years ago there was one on ebay. set my bid sky high and when the bid was over celebrated my "winning bid" after "congratulations, you won" message was shown. Until 2 seconds later it said, sorry, you didn't win. This is how I came to know auction sniper.. :) never lost a bid since but then again, never seen one of these for sale either. what a sweet jacket.

i have thought of having a quality replica made using the ruined one as a template

Was there matching pants for any of those jackets? .

not that I have seen any.

as for having replicas made, to get it done properly, I should consult with specialists in order to scale the same design in different sizes that actually fit. no use in making a pile of size L without having them available in all sizes.

I have another vintage Datsun jacket too - that one in very good condition luckily :) I'll post a picture soon..

and btw, those are all very cool jackets posted in this thread! sweet.

The stuff doesn't look like any special design to me. It's just your basic windbreaker, but not as baggy or loose-fitting (70's style, or "fashionably tight?")

I suppose you could contact Adrian Zmed if you need any samples. LOL

The rally jacket will be a difficult find, but there's currently a Datsun dealer jacket on ebay for $110 - size medium.  As for this thread being alive, you just resuscitated it.
