Hey all , so whats the consensus with everyone , when painting taillight finishers do most people stay with stock paint or do they paint out a different color ?Mine are stock and in superb shape although I might consider something else . Is this considered sacrilegious , will I be chastised by fellow owners , maybe shot on site by purists ? Please give me some input .

it seems that 80% stick with either the original colour or go to flat black. i prefer the stock colour, although my car is currently flat black

First, let me preface my opinion with this - it's your car. So ask for opinions and advice if you wish, but in the end you should do what YOU like, not what others like. Unless, of course, you are planning to sell it shortly, in which case going with the majority opinion may lead to an easier sale.

Personally, I like them either stock, or close to it. Any flat or matte gray color, short of full flat black. I refinished the panels on my red car using the custom paint from CDM. But the panels on my yellow car were/are a much darker flat gray. Not black, but considerably darker. And they look fine to me that way too.

I found this color from a thread a year + ago and I am very pleased with it.

Duplicolor HWP-102, or WP-102 Graphite. It is a heavy duty wheel paint. At first when sprayed on it looks way to much metalflake like. It dries darker and less flake, but needs to be covered with a coat of light satin matt finish to make it just right. This combo went on my finisher, wheel covers and grill. It will not show well on the screen, needs to be seen in person. Inexpensive and looks great, IMO.

FWIW , Wick Humble has a formula for a match to original ,

Ditzler duracryl DDL 2862 argent with quite a bit of suede additive .

Formula is , 1 pint DDL

200 units DX265

300 units DX264

Thin 100-150% and spray on fairly dry

Does anybody have any pictures that they can share with the Wicks formula for the finishers?? Please share if you do. I have a '72 coming out of the body shop in about 30 days and I'm going to have to make a choice on that finish......Thanks.

I painted my finisher the same color as my rally stripe.

I used the Rust-Oleum Black Satin. I haven't taken a picture of the backside of my son's and my '72 yet, but here's one of our '71 that we recently sold:

Hello , The formula I quoted is from the book , " how to restore your Z-car " by Wick Humble , ISBN # 1-931128-02-2 . This is a great book, get it from California Bills automotive handbooks . My friend did a complete resto on his 70 and this was his guide along the way . His t-finishers where painted following this formula and they look awesome, IMHO , as well some of you might recognize the factory pearl white from 70 also . I hope this pic will help in some of your decisions .

I see your friend's car has the blue interior...do you have any pics of the inside? Just curious because my latest project that I recently purchased is a 904 White '71 with the blue interior.

My friend did a complete resto on his 70 and this was his guide along the way . His t-finishers where painted following this formula and they look awesome, IMHO , as well some of you might recognize the factory pearl white from 70 also . I hope this pic will help in some of your decisions .

Interesting..looks a lot darker than what Les at CDM sells. Could be the light I guess.
