need to know production date

Featured Replies

Hey all... I have a 72 240 that I am restoring....it is missing all I.D. plates except for engine # and vin #74004....any one aprox. date I,m thinking either march or april 72

any help would be great

Scan through the registry at zhome.com and look for the closest to your VIN. That should get you in the ball park.

Hi Dan,

Member rdefabri here has serial number 73667 with a build date of 3/72. So that should narrow it down a little for you. Sorry I can't be more specific.

Oh ya that really helps...found the spot a zhome and looks like 4/72 is about right...or very close...

thanks again

Hi Dan:

What is the Engine Serial Number?... I'm guessing it's very close too or below L24-95xxx

Looks like the car is more likely 03/72. 03 Cars went into the low 75000 range..

the engine serial # is 093518, it is a "completely" rebuilt engine so I am guessing it is not the original....and I figured it had to be a late 3/72 or early 4/72....

again thanks for the responses

now after rereading Carl's post me thinks it's an original engine.....this makes me very happy.....

Hi Dan:

Most likely is the original engine. Engine numbers for 03/72 seem to run from L24-90xxx though early L24-95xxx. Chassis numbers from HLS30 71xxx into HLS30 75xxx

O4/72 HLS30-75xxx though HLS30-80xxx and engines L24-95xxx into L24-80xxx.

FWIW,

Carl

Dan,

If you are lucky the original jack and tool kit are still present with the car. If you are very lucky there will be a piece of paper about the size of an index card in the tool bag. Hopefully the date stamp in the Showa format is still visible and that will give you the exact date of one of the last items to be placed in the car before being shipped from Japan. In my 240Z's case the date was 15 August 1970 or 45.8.15 with 45 being the year in the Showa period. The info. is here:
